Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just gotta keep at it. keep doing various renditions till you get something you like. also the face length is because of her head tilt. The important part of this pose is to keep the facial structures in a tight triangle. also the bottom of the eyes are influnced by cheeks.

pinterest is a great place for references
also lately I've been using this site

http://reference.sketchdaily.net/

it gives you random references (you can filter them male/femate, clothes/nudes, action/standing, etc) and you can set a timer (30 seconds ~ 10 minutes)

this way I'm filling up my sketching book with quick (simple and hard) poses

you should work your junctions. right where the shoulder meets the chest, where the forearm meets the arm, and where the thighs meet the hips.
when I look at your drawing I see the actually right anatomy, but it lacks some adipose tissue.

maybe it looks disformed because your anatomy is quite right so every woman you draw is a skinny woman

well, there is a high chance that I'm talking nonsense. can anyone double check my argument?

Glad to see you still working! The progress is visible but you still have a long journey ahead of you.
The values seem better, just try blending it more smoothly and make greater contrasts, maybe try drawing on a toned paper and get a white pencil for highlights. Pay more attention to the reference picture and measurements.

The perfect next step for a beginner of your degree is to work through the book Keys to Drawing.

What's wrong with your drawing is symbol drawing (breast), not drawing what you truly see (torso) and wrong proportions (head).

Keys to Drawing is the correct first step to get started with all of these at once. Godspeed, friend.

Failure is an inevitable part of learning. In this case, you've missed the perspective pretty heavily. The camera in your reference is about where his chin is whereas the "camera" in your drawing is nose level. Your guy is looking strait on whereas the ref is looking down.

You are not thinking about the face in 3D.

Look again how the mouth exists in the reference.

Also: measure the length of the eye (yours is too big) and think of it like a sphere, not some random shape that lies flat on the face.

You didn't give a fuck about the shape of his ear. Again, think placement and give it volume.

I used Strathmore drawing and sketching 400 series sketchbooks when starting out, they're really good, but if you can get them, I recommend Canson mixed media sketchbooks. Do some research on paper weight. If you want paper that's cheap, Strathmore newsprint is great, but it'll deteriorate in a couple of years.

bonus: I make my tortillions/stumps out of strathmore newsprint paper.

If a vehicle looks like it's coming from one direction, it's likely in perspective anyways. Most people wouldn't be able to notice it's off.
Also, what don't you get about rendering? Just do it evenly and layer until you get your darker values. Don't press too hard or else you can't layer it as well and get stuck with a value. By the way, really like the top right one. That car actually looks like the car!

I don't know the terminology, and I haven't done many still life's to have a good sense for it. My capacity to see and understand values is really bad. I am going to get going on it, once I get through Scott Robertson's How to Draw book. (Jump straight into How to render by the same author)

foreshortening? Ok the gun is foreshortened, but usually foreshortening refers to a particular pose where a subject is lying on their back with their head toward the viewer and the rest of the body is pointing to the vanishing point.
This painting here of Caravaggio - Supper at Emmaus is a classical example of foreshortening errors. The man with his hands out stretched they both appear to be the same size even though the right hand should smaller in comparison with the left.
>>
>>2847405
Hell yeah it's better. Keep going, anon, you're doing great.
>>
>>2847407

whAAAt?

Foreshortening is just the name for maintaining scale in perspective drawing, particularly at low viewing angles and close POV...

The pose to which you are referring would make heavy use of foreshortening, but foreshortening is done with anything drawn at an angle to the viewer...
>>
>>2847407

Also yes, that painting is an excellent example of fucking up foreshortening...

Pity, because besides the scaling problem, all the other perspective stuff works.

Thanks for posting. That was an interesting exercise.
You have a good foundation in terms of laying down construction lines. You had her left leg placed back a little too far. This has some good perspectives on her body and the way her head is twisted back so we are drawing her face from below.
Good exercise in terms of stretching your foreshortening and 3-quarter view of the face.

Have you never heard of a thing called contrast?

I can't even see what you drew.

What you need is to learn value.

That should fix everything.
>>
>>2847665
if your styles has no sensitivity it'll always look like paint. There are good art made with 1px brushes so maybe look into that. but looking at your lines alone you can tell you don't draw often. do you lock your wrists? draw with your shoulder and elbow. keep that going for atleast a month of 4~6hr of practice. your lines should get better.
>>
>>2847675
>>2847669
Holy shit some actual feedback. I usually do lock my wrist, and I'm gonna try and fix that. I usually draw sitting down, my back leaning against something and I use my lap to hold my tablet. Should I change my sitting position?
>>
>>2847685
as long as you are comfortable and can use the full range of motion afforded by using your shoulder and elbow for drawing than it should be fine. You just need a lot of mileage to get your lines too look better. Nothing can substitute practice in that area.
>>
>>2847704
I don't know if I can thank you enough, I'm really glad you helped me. Thank you very much.

>>2847669
Any ideas on how I should fix the contrast? Obviously making it brighter, but anything else?
>>
>>2847710
Learn the value scale.

White is the lightest, black is the darkest.

Grey is in-between.

Anything a light color it near a dark color, it will seem more lighter/darker.

That's called contrast.

You also need to learn how to transition between values smoothly, so you give form to your drawings.

Since you use color, watch a video on color theory. Or a few.
>>
>>2847710
no problem a common problem I see is the lines thing and there really isn't a simple solution besides hard work and keeping that wrist locked. I'm afraid it'll eventually become a meme tho. Also not the contrast anon but lighting and contrast is a more advanced concept imo. If you want to go for it that's fine and the only real pointer I could give you is maybe start with grey scale. It's easier to grasp contrast when you arent worried about color at the same time.

This was my first time using Photoshop to try and draw something. I'm pretty happy with it but I think the shadows need some work.

Poster here, my lines are always really wonky when I use that. I can do them pretty good with a pencil though. Any suggestions on drawing with the mouse?

Save up 60$ and buy a wacom intuos draw. Until then keep drawing with pencil.

I need a fucking scanner. the majority of the color is lost and things look washed out. That being said I still think my forms blend together too much. I am also shit at landscapes. Anyway. This is my 4th watercolor painting.

HALP!

This is the refrence I was painting from. Admitting it was not a amazing painting to start and in actual size the image is about 2"X3" so it was hard to work from.

What's the correct order to learn how to do art? I want to paint and do lineart, I have plenty of free time, but I don't know where to start or what step I'm on. My drawings from references feel ok, but from imagination, I feel like I'm lacking, which is something I'd like to get better at. What do I do?

Some works from late 2016 for reference
>>
>>2848007
The correct order is drawing from imagination and seeing what's the first thing you get stuck at. Then work at that thing.

you both are idiots, caravaggio was a genius, he deliberately made those hands larger to better fit the composition whilst also making the gesture of the man visible as the painting was strung up high on the wall and not all the minute details were visible. The hand had to be larger, if it was smaller it wouldn't be noticeable and would look like the man is trying to suggest to another person in the room not to come forward. This again is also a story telling design choice.

I dare say that in order to learn to draw you should work on your drawing skill and not your handwriting.
>>
>>2848294
but is handwriting not merely symbol drawing perfected?
>>
>>2848304
And why would you want to learn how to symbol draw?

>when your traditional medium is so outdated and pointless for the digital age.
depends if you're trying to sell art or sell your abilities desu. Nobody is impressed by photoshops that emulate paintings. Nobody will ever buy that shit.

practice more, do vertical contours even.
>>
>>2848516
I don't really understand what you mean by vertical contours, do you have examples?

Sorry I meant do more cross contours like so.
We used to do this with apples and other round objects. You did on some.
>>
>>2848534
Ohhh, I see. Thanks man. I unintentionally did it on some because DaB recommends to draw a line that represents centre of mass if you're having trouble, but I'll try and do it correctly now, thanks again!

I'm the poster from yesterday (posted those posts and more). I've been trying and practicing the tips you guys gave me, and I'm trying to figure out how I could make it look more contorted. Anyone have any thoughts/tips?

(I'm using those two pictures for help btw)
