Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I regularly post in /beg/ and the majority of replies amount to "end yourself"

Anyway, why do you recommend a pencil? I've read that pen helps speed up improvement as you're less likely to keep polishing a turd.
>>

If your are using construction lines, it is better to use pencil so you can erase them. It helps keep things looking clean.

You want to learn that?

It's really not as important as you think it is.

Sure it helps, but if you learn that you're more accurate at drawing from sight, then it's not like it matters much.

But, Loomis has construction all the time in his books.

Search any anatomy tutorial and you'll get construction.

Drawabox teaches you construction too for animals. Not sure if the figure section is back or not yet, but it was pretty good when it was there.

Hmmm, ok, I'll keep drawing and see where I end up. It just seems like getting the basic shapes down would be helpful.

Also your post was exactly what I was hoping for. I'm try and just bust fundamentals for a while. Any books I should use for this? If not i'ma just try and draw cubes from different angles for a while and see how that goes.
>>
>>2844578
You should just draw characters because drawing boxes does not help you.
>>
>>2844581
I was thinking of just drawing shapes and stuff cause I feel my hand doesnt draw what I feel I want to do. Like my lines wabble and stuff. So was thinking I could strengthen my dexterity with just long spans of simple practice. But if doing characters is just as good I might do that instead haha.
>>
>>2844578
Needs to be more than just cubes. Draw things in variety different shapes different angles. Set up basic stuff in your room and draw it boxes to start, bottles and things like that after awhile.

Do that last one a lot too. If you're doing mostly digital just find images you want to try then draw them, overlay to see how off you are then try again. Finish the entire drawing before you overlay to compare. You're training your eye this way. Once you're kinda 1 to 1 or within small margin of error try drawing it again but compare to your closest drawing. Make note of where you're off and by how far it'll expose how accurate your eye is and how you need to train it.

This will help a lot with drawing from reference and drawing same things repeatedly like characters more accurately. When you get heavy into proportions it'll be easier to study and understand too.

are you drawing with your shoulder? don't draw with your wrist. Try and have your wrist locked and make the movements with your shoulder and elbow. Don't draw with your fingers and wrists. Maybe for finer details it's okay but for the most part shoulder and elbow movements.

also if you just trying to do perfect circles use a circle tool. keep practicing them freehand and they will eventually look better.

hey i don't know whats up the other anons ass but to answer your question simply, yes, I've done it, it's helped me. Repetition of the fundies is what most people have to do to understand them, true of most everything. Also do it traditionally. Can't stress that enough. Use pen for those line exercises. If you ever question why you're doing it, tell yourself it's to develop your hand eye coordination. If you want it bad enough, you'll stick through this boring shit. anyways good luck.

I can ignore the fact that furshit but you need a better sub fetish. It's trash.

Perspective is off from the original, it's kind of forward facing compared to the upskirt kind of angle they got there. Check your negative spaces as a guideline how you're doing, it becomes easier to see how much you vary from the original by how much the negative spaces differ.

Usually we pay such close attention to the positive we over look the negative and that's often the tell tale that somethings off more than the positive. You know it doesn't look quite right but you can't ever put your finger on it. That's usually why or atleast i think as to why.

you just need to get tighter at it so you close the gaps of difference. Most of your practice will be honing in that.

While it might seem bad it's not a bad skill to develop so if he needs to work from reference or a character sheet it'll come out looking better than if he just guesses at it most every time.

He won't learn shit if that's what he does 24/7 but learning the skill to utilize later is important if you plan to do more than 1 time illustrations.

What the fuck is this even supposed to mean? Drawing isn't like math. You do whatever the fuck you want. If you want to draw a bird, draw a bird. It may take you a while, but you'll learn how to draw a bird faster the next time around and the next to the point you could probably speed paint it within a minute from memory in a month if all you did was the same bird.

And you listened to them? You let someone tell you something was too hard and that you should give up? >>
>>2844821
He's just explaining it poorly.
I recommend you read perspective made easy first and foremost. Master everything that it has to teach you. Then, learn how to rotate a box in perspective with vanishing points. Know how to tilt it. Know about your X, Y, and Z axis. (You can learn this Scott Robertson's book "How to Draw")

You can literally make cylinders out of boxes, so keep in mind boxes and how they move take precedence.

Learn what happens when you find the center of a box in relation to proportion, etc.

Everything can be broken apart into boxes when you find the sides.

>>
>>2844821
I highly recommend reading Scott Robertson's book after perspective made easy. There's really no reason to move past perspective until you're a complete master.

If you take the human figure and break it into boxes, you'll notice it puts your basic knowledge to the test.

Here's a good website for 3D references down the road:

https://sketchfab.com/search?q=ref

Break everything down into a box and learn how things get rotated. You'll learn a lot faster through 3D models than photographs ever will.

It's the only substitute for life drawing that I can find that's acceptable aside from a real life doll.
>>

>>
>>2844821
Also, be sure you know that parallel lines from an orthographic view always converge in perspective. This is the foundation for a lot of intuitive perspective.

(You're drawing a nose and you're angling lines, etc, but you have to keep in mind the lines are still parallel if you were right on top/to the side of what you're drawing)
>>
>>2844834
Just reference things from life
>>
>>2844841
Okay, easy.

First thing you need to go is go to google and get a bunch of skull images.

From every angle, front, back, side.

Now draw them as close as you can to what you see.

Come back when you're done.
>>
>>2844801
>>2844821
It's also important to keep in mind that mindless grinding is exactly what it sounds like: mind-less.

Always have an objective in your head while you study ANYTHING, or you won't get anywhere.

This is why you get people on Deviant art stating that they draw for 10 hours a day, but they haven't improved in years.
>>
>>2844844
>>2844841
Don't do that shit. Pictures aren't worth a damn. You'll never understand how to really draw from a photograph. It's impossible.

thank you for the website.

>>

be sure to really understand how boxes move in perspective.

You can probably figure out how the vanishing points rotate by moving that skull around. I still recommend learning perspective before you even bother with skulls.
>>
>>2844847
Then you need to read Keys to Drawing and get out of the idea that cartooning is the only way to go. If you don't know how things work in reality you can't bend them to your will when you try to cartoonify them. Else keep drawing your shitty skulls being dumbfounded why they never come out """""""""right""""""""""".

But how do I KNOW if I have a good understanding of fundamentals? I'm sorry if this makes me retarded but I really need this spelt out for me. I think my fundamentals are OKAY, in THEORY.

So am I meant to like, redraw parts that I like? should I draw over some parts and recreate them?
>>
>>2845423
Have you read the sticky?
What you're supposed to do is copy the construction and understand what the artist did to achieve that style (accentuate certain parts of the body, lighting tricks and stuff like that)
If you don't know how to construct then you should start with keys to drawing and then move on to loomis to have the minimum basic understanding.
Basically what you want to achieve if you're an absolute begginer is this:
1- Learn to draw from life.
2- Study life until you have a decent understanding of anatomy and shape.
3- Learn to draw from imagination.
4- Develop your style from exrimenting and/or studying what other people do.

So obviously I'm very early on in the learning process

What I am wondering is is it better to spend a lot of time on one picture and try to make it as good as you can, or draw a lot of shit pictures where you're theoretically improving incrementally with each drawing just by sheer volume?
>>

>>
>>2845586
They look forced and over thought.

it you want to work on your line weight, you should work traditionally.
>>
>>2845581
What you should do is do your best to take a drawing very far, like at least a few hours. But when you stop, depends on a lot of stuff like what you want and if you want to spend more time refining. Doing pieces that are like 10+ hours really build discipline into you because it requires you to not give up and recover from your mistakes instead of starting over.
>>
>>2845589
I do fine traditionally but working digitally is a different thing. It's different controlling a digital pen to a regular pen and pencil.
>>
I just bought a sketchbook, an eraser pack, a set of assorted pencils, and sharpener.

Should I care much about technique at the very beginning (e.g. methods, pencil type, etc), or just get drawing and worry about technique later?
>>

When I say technique, I mean more about how to use the pencil. When I used to draw as a teenager it was always sharp lines for everything (just drawing with the point), and for shading I would draw with the point lightly and smudge it.

Should I draw with the point of the pencil and just pay attention to form while doing so? Or is there a specific way I need to be using the pencil I need to learn before actually drawing at all?

half of these people have never held a pencil in their life with the intention to draw seriously so it's only natural to make sure they're "doing everything right" when in reality they need to just sit down and do the hard work instead of procrastinating

what the fuck is this chicken scratch bullshit? you think your fundamentals and anatomy is okay? are you delusional? like seriously look at what you did and what you tried to emulate. this is fucking disgusting. Like holy fuck these lines bro. fuck.

on the contrary i find your lines pretty good. Thank god they aren't chickenshit lines too. While your work isn't a 1:1 recreation it looks good on it's own .

Your understanding of anything regarding human anatomy and basic shape is seriously lacking. If you've already gone through the books in the sticky than you didn't really pay attention to what was taught there, go back to studying them from the beginning and this time learn to actually be self-critical or you won't ever improve.
At the very least, you shouldn't be drawing from imagination yet since there are extremely obvious flaws that you should be able to notice.
>>
>>2845672
But you should at least polish some of those turds. or you will become like me who just sketches sketches sketches but can't finish shit.
>>
>>2845764
Sorry. But to make up for it i'll give ya some pointers. Your lines are chicken scratchy. Are you drawing with your wrist? this is a nono. Lock your wrist and draw with your shoulder and elbow. At first it'll be uncomfortable and tiresome but get used to it. If you have big peices of paper like newsprint it'd be good to sketch on that so that the big swooping motions of shoulder and elbow drawing are something you get used to. Also not sure what program you using but you can color your sketch in layers. put down the skin layer and then the hair ontop of that so that you dont get those white specks in your art. You can do it other ways too ofc but I think that's simplest for now. GL and HF
>>
>>2844510
Then stop pressing so hard or get a mechanical pencil, I literally only to slightly sharpen my pencil after like an hour of hour of sketching
>>
>>2845780
Okay.

I was using photoshop - colour wasn't too important to me, it was just getting the art style from the ref. I got bored and started colouring it in. I'll work on making my lines more confident and drawing from the elbow. Can I see an example of your work?

I think i may have already been in the process of fixing some of those things before your post. How's the latest version?

I have a decent art book library including some loomis books and other varied things. Being able to sit there and actually read them is the hard part. I don't absorb information very well because i'm fighting against a weak attention span in most everything i do.

>>
>>2845819
Haha thanks. But I mean we all start somewhere right? and I might try and draw the same piece to help ya out. But usually in anime you can draw the eyes and mouth in a triangle too keep the proportions in check.

>>2845821
Haha thanks. But I think formal studying will help me improve much better than whatever the fuck I been doing. I started drawing on and off since highschool but I'm only at this level. Why? because I didn't study and just drew bs I liked or thought drawing constantly would make me better. It's like you do math. You do 1+1=3 and keep doing that but it'll never be correct. I think the same thing is valid in art. Just drawing is right but also knowing that you are doing it correctly helps a ton. You can see much of my cringe shit here.

it just exists. I dono what you trying to go for here? is this a study? is it from your own imagination. If it from imagination it's cute. if a study where is the ref. The thing that is jarring tho is the mouth. with everything else you did it really soft no real solid lines but the mouth is just a ^ line..
>>
>>2845850
No it just depends. Sometimes people aren't in the mood to repeat the same thing. And some just can't help those who are absolute novices. Like I usually don't help and rather try to get help but today is a good day I guess.

Also when general good advice is a meme you just get bashed.

is the mirror image exercise the best way to learn how to draw lines?
Like you put an image reference upside down and you try to draw it with the right brain?
>>
>>2845860
No. The best way to learn how to draw is to draw.
>>
>>2845741
Not an expert, but here's my opinion. Eyes seem flat and lifeless due to the lack of detail. Hair would probably look better with sharper edges, and I'm also just not really sure what it's supposed to be. A dwarf? A angry child?

the secret is to take longggggg breaks like months @ a time of not drawing. To absorb all the drawing skills you were training. kek jk but that's what happened to me went from shitty to less shitty after each time I stopped drawing. I wouldnt recommend it tho. Try and find a regimen to stick with. That's what I am trying to find atm. to git gud.
>>
>>2845890
Then you aren't going to make it or you're here for the wrong reason. If you just want cool looking stuff, look into /biz/ and get a good amount of money. You should be able to get a ton of commisions at that point.

Man, I'm taking an anatomy course from a Disney animator with 20+ years under his belt, this guy draws cartoons for a living every day and must have drawn 2847238974092378 cartoon characters in his life.

But what he said is: "You need to learn anatomy to draw these characters well".

So just buckle up, learn the fundamentals, learn how to draw well in a classic manner and along the way go applying what you learn to what you like, at least this is the approach I'm taking.

Don't get too hasty about it, the road is fucking long and you need time to get anywhere, just don't lose hope and keep practicing.

There are loads of materials for free, even more if you pirate, and nowadays with schoolism and things like that its very affordable to get good materials to really learn the craft.

You can do it anon, we can all make it.
