I would say getting decent at perspective is a good start. The book the other anon link is nice, also check out Rapid Viz by Kurt Hank. Once you're comfortable with showing forms and volume in perspective(I still struggle a lot), you can focus on design. Also check out Darren Quach, John Park, Maung Thuta for mech related stuff.
