After two decades of existence, sennheiser has refused to address the fact that the absolute thinnest, most fragile possible copper leads are what power the drivers. This is cost cutting to an extreme that in no way benefits the consumer and shows a complete lack of build quality or refinement.

The hd600 have severe treble roll off and no sub-bass, meaning that not only are they not neutral whatsoever but they also will not even provide frequency response to the full range of human hearing without serious amounts of EQ.

When purchasing the hd600, you are essentially buying headphones that have massive amounts of distortion in the low frequency region. This cannot be fixed by EQ and is a result of dynamic driver limitations. Spending more than $150 on dynamic driver headphones is a poor decision.

THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of audibility:
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_I.pdf
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_II.pdf
> In our next paper we will show that .01% THD of one type of nonlinear system can be perceived as unacceptable while 10% THD in another example is perceived as inaudible. Even one of these simple examples is sufficient to invalidate THD as a viable metric for discussion of the perception of distortion. Furthermore, 1% THD is not at all the same as 1% IM, but we will show that neither correlates with subjective perception.
>These results supported the skepticism that THD and IMD metrics were poor predictor of subjective perception of sound quality ratings.
Furthermore:
http://asa.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1121/1.4984044
>Research has suggested that non-linear properties of headphone responses have little effect
Furthermore:
https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/e38e/b5526af06589596390cd585e6aa38c19344c.pdf
From this presentation given at the AES 129th convention:

Revision two fixed that. I never heard any ringing or hint of it with the revision 2 m1060s at my local shop.

Also calling the hd600s "balanced" is kindof stupid considering the lack of bass and treble.

It's pretty good at everything, and not really bad at anything. You might have different bass preferences and that's ok, but there's no major flaws whatsoever.
>the lack of bass and treble.
Repeating a lie often enough won't make it true.
>but... literally no bass
Yes, we know you do use and like your ER4XR. HD600 isn't bass-enhanced, so it's literally no bass.
>I never heard any ringing or hint of it with the revision 2 m1060s at my local shop.
Ringing flaw won't be apparent at every song. That's why we have such wonderful thing known as measurements. And poorfag or not, buying headphones on faith, with no measurements, is not the best of decisions to make. Recommending them goes well into irresponsible territory.

Newbie with his newly acquired HD600. My mobo is sometimes making electronic noises and it's annoying (it doesn't seem to come from the headphones themselves since it doesn't occur when I plug it to my Switch / 3DS). Would buying some Asus soundcard help? They're not expensive apparently. I also feel like it's not powering them enough.
Maybe a dumb question but, regarding the electronic noises, would plugging them to the rear help? For now they're plugged on the front.

An amp is not out of question but considering it's more expensive I'd like to look into it more first, and try the HD600 without for a longer time.

Depends on the speaker layout.
>It hurts the sound to have them right up again the wall right?
Not quite, no. The question is not well posed.
Things like radiation pattern will the primary factor. A standard direct radiating speaker has no real issue being placed against a wall.
A lesser factor is if the speaker has a rear port. These will require a bit of space for airflow, A few inches, about 10-15 cm will work.

Literally no scratches at all, even inside the device it looks pristine. I've tried it on another laptop, the devices is detected but just no sound, I use pavucontrol to switch the output and it just goes dead silent when I switch to the magni modi. I've opened it up and given it a quick dust off with some compressed air to see it that would fix it but that's done nothing. And when I mean it was a light fall, it really was. If it had hit a hard floor I would have been worried, but there's no exterior damage to it at all. Might be able to get Schitt to repair it under warranty.

An external DAC+amp is what you need to get rid of that. Get a Schiit Fulla 2 (amp+DAC combo unit which can be used as a standalone DAC) and see if its volume is adequate for your preferences. It probably will be. If it isn't, get a Magni 2 and use the Fulla 2 as just a DAC.

Fundamentals from 150-500Hz.
Energy focus and presence around 2-5kHz.
High harmonics and air from 8kHz and up.

For isolation in commutes, foam sleeves work best. Triflange and biflange sleeves are a comparable alternative. Foam can be difficult to use, and it is my experience that most people are totally incompetent at wearing headphones and in-ears.
A deep fit (bony part of the ear canal) is mandatory for really high isolation, particularly. Etymotics are well known for this, but anything else that is small with a slim stem can be inserted with relative ease.

I'm partial to the Etymotic ER4SR. Even toned throughout, smooth and well balanced sound. Significantly more so than practically all IEMs with high driver counts. It is very particular with fit, especially with the bass response, so you may have to spend some time attempting to find an appropriate sleeve. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much tolerance for error here.
May as well consider the 4XR as an alternative for a little more low frequency. It's not particularly "less neutral" despite what you may find people say.
>>
>>62130328
>bad motherboard audio
An external dac + headphone amplifier will solve that. The schiit fulla 2 is a good option. Another is the DAC-X6.

>An amp is not out of question but considering it's more expensive I'd like to look into it more first, and try the HD600 without for a longer time.
Your motherboard is flawed, and a DAC+Amp really is the way to go, as buying just the DAC part would be silly.

>May as well consider the 4XR as an alternative for a little more low frequency. It's not particularly "less neutral" despite what you may find people say.
Don't. As it can't be done any other way, in exchange for more bass, everything else is recessed.
It also makes the midrange less flat, which will hurt female vocals.
>>
>>62133153
Literally speaking, no. Nothing has been recessed.
The driver has been ported, which replaced the 4SR bass slope off with a bass boost. The low frequency sensitivity has been increased. Neither is 4SR or 4XR is more accurate in this regard.

Spectral emphasis can be taken as zero-sum as you suggest. The change is not dramatic anyway.

Frequency response is the frequency representation of the device output, as obtained by the Fourier transform. For simplicity, it is the device's transfer function.
Audio folks tend to use "frequency response" to refer to the normalized magnitude of the frequency response. Nothing in the transfer function has been reduced though.

What you are referring to is the balance of the sound and normalized magnitude response.
>>
>>62133661
I will first order the etymotic to learn what neutral really sounds like and use my new found reference point with fr graphs to make a choice should I decide to return the Ety.

>>
ER-4SR is more neutral than ER-4XR. This is not debatable. ER-4SR has a 1 dB bass rolloff when measured with a good seal. ER-4XR has a 3-5 dB bass boost. ER-4XR is significantly more bass-heavy than ER-4SR is bass-light.

Flat treble on InnerFidelity's target curve will sound very bright, so their compensation exaggerates the recessed treble. Extremely high-Q nulls like the one at ~4 kHz aren't audible, and are often measurement artifacts which won't show up in other measurements. The recessed treble response here is an extremely minor flaw for a $60 headphone.

>>
>>62136310
I don't dispute that IF's curve is too bright, but just looking at the hideous raw response tells me all I need to know. It's going to sound awful. Moreover, the look of the bass makes me think it's a poorly sealed measurement (ha ha meme xD) and that it probably has a 5dB bass boost when properly sealed. Granted, it's $60, but even then, I'm not impressed. It's competitive, but I wouldn't say it stands out.

Loli-flat from 20-1,000 Hz. Extremely light and comfortable. Detachable cable. Yeah, that stands out at $60. The frequency response tells me that, despite the recessed treble, it's going to sound extremely natural and "right" for the price, much moreso than a CB-1 or ATH-M40x.

The nosedive at 3-5K is going to muffle the shit out of vocals.

Sort of. /hpg/ gets into shitpost frenzies from time to time. We are experiencing one of them, and its about the perennially favorite target HD600/HD650.
Any product has real pros and cons. You get zealots who try and frame these products as great invention in the history of the world and the other people who see it as worse than scum. They clash, they get defensive, make attacks and flood the threads with hundreds of back and forth post. I think I've seen it go on for a thousand posts in one night.
>>
>>62136548
That's not a high Q null. Regardless, looking at the raw response you can see that its super inconsistent in the midrange, and the presence region is recessed which further muffles the vocals. Not fun.
>>
What type of front input for the headphones does the Magni 2 Uber have? 3.5mm jack or a 6.3mm jack?
>>
>>62136580
That literally is a high-Q null, and it's literally consistent in the midrange. You're literally making shit up.
>>
>>62136643
The high Q null isnt audible, but that area is very clearly recessed. No, not 30dB recessed, but still. Learn the read graphs you fuckwit.

The perennially favorite target isn't just HD600/650, it's Sennheiser, period. It has been for years. You're seeing it in action right now. 4chan's naturally contrarian nature manifests itself in irrational criticism of the extremely popular, successful Sennheiser.

>>62136667
What the fuck are you going on about? Stop complaining and realize every recommendation doesn't have to be Sennheisers

Both HD600 and Vanatoo T0 are really good.
Now the dilemma is which to listen to. T_T

Usually people here would say Sennheiser, why did you choose this over HD 569?
>>
>>62130747
HD569.
>>
>>62137254
I think both are worth having since they're good in their own ways.
So I guess if anybody was wondering.
Vanatoo > JBL LSR305 > Micca 42x
I didn't like the lsr305 for desktop and it's actually got pretty bad off axis and dispersion.
Micca 42x is has the same problem as the lsr305 and the vocals always seemed off to me.
My only complaints about the Vanatoo T0 is that it sounds a little too warm. But I don't think I'll find another speaker with such amazing dispersion.

These may be the nicest looking headphones ever made but I'm just so sure i'm going to regret them over something like a $300 IEM.
Anyone else stuck in midfi hell?

It's going to be infinitely more comfy than an IEM.

>>
>>62137730
When it's the AD series, it's okay to say no bass yet when the HD600 get's called out everyone protects its baby. Huh.
>>62137793
Built better, more common detachable cable (569 uses a 2.5 TRS twist lock detachable cable), basically a retuned DT770 80 Ohm with bass port adjusters. If you're not into a V-Shape, the 569 would be my personal second option.
>>
>>62138114
That's because "no bass" is an accurate description of AD series and an inaccurate description of HD600, literally and factually.

No, they should send them to brutes like you for free, so that you can destroy them again.
These headphones won't break if you're slightest bit of careful in the first place.

They have the same basic physical design suffering from the same design flaw in the same part.

Not true. The part shown in >>62138205 will develop stress fractures over time no matter how careful you are with it.

HF5 should come with 100 Ohm adapter. I believe Etymotic ER4PT comes with 25 ohm in it and includes 75 ohm adapter.
