what i mean is, exactly what's wrong with it? like can you list the problems you have with it since you all know more about watches than i do?
>>
>>62027288
The hands are slightly too small for the dial, for one. I wouldn't get a gold watch unless it was solid gold to be honest, since the plating is eventually going to wear off. There's nothing offensively bad about it.
>>
>>62027315
I have the same thoughts. I'd never ever go for a gold watch since the chain would have to be gold too and I've never liked that look. I suppose it does look fine with that band, though. I'm just worried that other watchfags will point out all these flaws like maybe the crownguard or the second marks.

Realistically getting less than +/- 15s a month is on par with quartz watches. It needs 100% less battery changes than a quartz too.

>>62028713
I've read multiple times how people get <=5s per month with their spring drive. One of the only ways to really get better accuracy would be thermocompensation, like in the 9F movements. I disagree about the design, but whatever, it's not that important.
>>
>>62028730
it's the same phenomenon as people getting +-5s/week on their poljots. a stopped clock is still right twice a day, says nothing about the watch that under some circumstances it's "kinda sorta accurate until it's drifted again"
>>
>>62028755
If you have some evidence of spring drive movements drifting in their accuracy, I'd like to see it.

That's what the +/-15s spec is for, it's a CYA clause. What I mean is evidence of a single movement changing it's accuracy (by a non-trivial amount) over time.

you say that like it makes it untrue
I think seiko has better data than your anecdote from /r/watches/

>>62028804
I'm asking for an anecdote from you m8. Do you know of a single spring drive movement which has drifted in accuracy (not just difference between two different examples)? I'm sure you're not disputing the fact that manufacturers inflate the specs/tolerances to worse than the average real world performance, right?

Why do you insist on totally wrong about absolutely everything? Do you have a fetish for getting BTFO?

Accutron's were guaranteed to one minute per month accuracy when new, which is +/- 2 SPD. Even if you gift the tuning fork the assumption that it was twice as accurate as Bulova themselves claimed that would still leave it at +/- 30 seconds per month, compared to the claimed accuracy standard of +/- 15 seconds per month for spring drive.

And if you actually did have any interest in or appreciation for horology you would respect the ingenuity of the totally original and unique spring drive concept, which was invented by a single fucking dude at Seiko Epson as a side project and which found a unique way to fuse mechanical watchmaking traditions with quartz timing regulation. How someone can claim to appreciate tuning fork movements and talk shit about spring drive at the same time is truly a testament to the length someone will go to shitpost because of how bootyblasted they are.

>>62028651
Tuning fork watches were rated from Bulova themselves to have 4 times worse accuracy, please stop making a fool of yourself.

>The design was first conceived by Yoshikazu Akahane at Suwa Seikosha (currently Seiko Epson) in 1977, and patents were applied for it in 1982. In total, no less than 230 patents have been applied worldwide for this movement. The movement was announced publicly in 1997, presented at the 1998 Basel Watch Fair and first appeared commercially in the Credor 'luxury watch' range as a limited edition in 1999. A version which included an automatic winder was shown in Seiko models at the 2005 Basel Watch Fair. The internationally available Seiko models were officially launched at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris on September 14, and went on sale the following day.

That's what I'm saying, if you're going to be getting negative feedback over something that incredibly petty you should at least try and ruin his day and criticize his character. Generally petty people are hyper-sensitive to criticism so you can do a lot to ruin his day.

Yeah, still I told that to him in a kinda respectful way just in case he wants to spare that feedback.
The worst part is that I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped the watch and fucked it up himself. In that case I'd end up with a fucked up watch which can't be sold, a bad feedback and a shit feeling of being a fucking cuck to jewbay.

The problem is that Jean-Claude Berney himself says that ASULAB's HPM is based on a 1978 Swiss registered patent of his own, and he himself does not cite his prior 1972 patent:
https://wiki.epfl.ch/polymac/documents/hpm-en.pdf
>The idea to use the energy available at the escapement to drive a quartz resonator is quite old as well and has first been described by J.Cl. Berney in 1978 [4]. The use of a modified stepping motor as escapement generator has been presented in 1987 [5]. The power consumption of the associated electronic circuit and the basic choice of the generator principle did lead to sophisticated micromechanical solutions, difficult to industrialise.
If the person who filed the 1972 patent does not judge it as relevant to the development of ASULAB's HPM, then I don't see how anyone can claim that it does.
>>
>>62033245
pretty convoluted topic probably could not be resolved in a wt thread unless you started doing some pretty serious physical research.. Either way seiko came to market with it so it doesn't really matter. I also don't care about it or want a watch with it so i especially don't give a fuck.

From what I know of the development of spring drive, the basic idea essentially remained essentially impossible to implement at all until a large number of additional developments were made. Basically, the concept simply does not work unless you can enormously reduce its power requirements to a scale where a mainspring can store enough power to make the mechanism work for more than a few minutes. This was basically why it remained a side project worked on in spare time by a few people at Seiko Epson for so long.

Just got this old-ass glashütte spezimatic. T-mobile gave me 2 shit huawei tablets for free and I swapped them for this watch. Retail price is around what he asked for it but this won't reduce in value as quick.
It's more than twice my age (made in1967) but runs nice and looks alright.
26 jewels automatic, recently serviced.
I think it was a great deal, and a watch is going to be a nice addition to my collection when I am done with some restoration and some pimping.
What do you think, anon ?

Is there any interest here in someone making a webstore for custom or premade modding watches? I've been doing it myself for some time now and would love to make some more for you guys, I have all needed tools. I can share some of my work. Mainly doing Seikos (for obvious reasons) and the rare Invicta Pro Diver (Pro Seiko).

I wouldn't scalp or charge a ridiculous amount, maybe like 5%-15% labor fee of the parts cost. I can order all parts or you could send them to me.

If there is enough interest I will setup a domain.

Yeah, I know lots of us can DIY, I just realize that maybe some people don't want to invest all the time/money into DIY and would rather pay a small upcharge for someone else to do it who has exp. and the neccessary tools. Figured it would be something fun to do with my skills and time while capitalizing on making some cash on the side.

>honesty modding dive watches is legitimately retarded.

I do more than just dive watches, but I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I think that modding watches is a great, cost-effective way for someone to get exactly the watch they want. I honestly have more pride wearing watches I worked on and made than my Omega Speedmaster.

Because a base or elabore grade ETA 2824 is not enough technically better than a Miyota 9015 or Seiko 6r15 to compensate for the ETAs being used in massively overpriced, low effort shitters. A 2824 top grade in a sub $1k watch actually made to a decent level of finishing is fine.

The Valjoux 7750 is a piece of shit, and literally every other automatic chronograph in production today and several now out of production are better than it in every technical respect.

The 2892 is an excellent movement, but is typically used in watches that are way overpriced for their level of finishing in all other respects than the movements. You cannot get away with charging in-house Tudor money for something with a 2892-A2 in it.

Oh and for the record, people mostly don't talk shit about brands that use ebauche movements at reasonable pricepoints with reasonable levels of manufacturing quality and finishing. Sinn never gets shit on here, and they are arguably a fair bit overpriced at this point, but at least the quality is reasonable. It's the giant steaming pile of low effort chink cased 2924 shitters being sold for way too much money that piss people off.

valjoux is shit. 2824 is actually quite a bit better than 6r15 but not miyota 9015. 2892 is far better but the standard grade is often used. However you can get a hamilton with a standard 2892 in it for under 500 dollars new on from jomashop.

Here is a good article by Al Archer (a well known vintage Omega specialist watchmaker) on the subjet: https://omegaforums.net/threads/chronographs-vertical-and-horizontal-coupling.5539/

The short version is that horizontal clutch designs are almost strictly inferior to vertical clutch designs for chronographs. As far as I recall, the 7750 is the only horizontal clutch chronograph movement still in production. Even the Seagull ST19 is a vertical clutch design.

Like this smart anon said, I have a certain amount of money I usually keep for trading watches. And the reason I spent half of my GayPal balance on the next day is because I was following an auction that ended that day and I happened to win it.
I always use PayPal as a buyer because it's very fast and supposedly secure, it's not like I bought it because I got "da dollah" from the asshole that bought my other watch, I wanted to buy that watch regardless of my GayPal balance.

The watch I sold was pic related, this limited edition slavshit chronograph for 3133, which now is broken. It's a pity but I think I'll manage to repair it for cheap since I'm going on a tour to Ukraine in a week. Pretty sure I'll manage to find a good and cheap slav watch repair guy there.

>2824 is actually quite a bit better than 6r15
I would agree for top and chronometer grades, but base and elabore grade 2824s not so much. In any case, my issue was moreso that watches that are 6r15 powered tend to provide the value in the manufacturing quality of the rest of the watch, whereas base and elabore grade 2824s are often found in very low effort parts catalogue watches.

>Miyota 9015
If those fucking idiots at Citizen would just put a micro-adjuster on one they could really make a dent on 2824 usage in lower end microbrands I think. Would make them much easier to regulate and much more shock resistant.

>Hamilton
Of course, Swatch would never allow the 2892 to be used in an application where it got to have a second hand at such a pricepoint, sadly. I've been keeping my eyes out for a 2892 top grade at a reasonable price that wasn't ruined in some way for a few years now and haven't found anything I was willing to spend money on.

>My buddy has a Porche and i honestly can't belive how much nicer it is in every single way

I would hope so for that money.

Everything is relative. My BMW is about a billion times nicer than my last shitbox. My last car was a Golf and when you went full throttle it sounded like you were swinging a bag of spanners around in the engine bay.

I only paid a few thousand for my BMW, but I swear people see the shiny BMW badge and the fact its been looked after and assume I paid like £10-20k or something. The fact its the last gen probably helps because it looks newer than it is.

Normies don't have a clue about cars. They see BMW and assume you're rich or try-hard even if its over a decade old.

People don't like paying *stupid* amounts for ETA because it's a commoditised movement available to anyone at a known, low price, even lower if you buy wholesale.

A Rolex, or Grand Seiko or Nomos or whatever, can at least try to justify the price of the watch by arguing you can't get the same movement elsewhere, at any price. So there's at least the illusion that the movement significantly contributes to the price.

But for an ETA? When the same 7750 is $900 in a Hamilton and $3k in a Tag Heuer, this illusion of the movement contributing significantly to the watch's price gets shattered and you're left wondering why are you paying $2k for a chinese milled steel case and bracelet.

Then it's about priorities. When you're not using generic ETA, you can make a movement whose characteristics match the purpose of your watch.
Nomos goes for thin and light. Seiko goes for longer service intervals and higher power reserve (lower bit rate and new mainspring) in their 6R15, or high accuracy in their 3600 high beats. Tudor goes for high accuracy and ruggedness. Other manufactures do twin barrels for really long power reserves, etc. .

With ETA you get a workhorse indeed, but it's the same plain old jack of all trades workhorse. Why pay this much for it?
