This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Seiko is indeed a very respectable brand.
They made the first quartz watch and they make tons of mechanicals with in-house movements and original designs too. All the admiration for Seiko, they are the undeniable kings in their price point.

Agreed. Look at how much watch you get for $4500. If you bought a Swiss watch for almost $5000 you'd get something small and feminine looking. Tiny watches for men with tiny wrists. And maybe something else tiny LMAO

Every quartz clock I've ever come across has a piece of shit inside it like this. Loud, unreliable plastic turds.

Does anyone know of any jeweled quartz clock movements with metal gears and plates? Current or out of production, but preferably current?
>>
>>61989061
Leaving aside that I'm fat, I always take watch pictures with the face tilted back from the camera to minimize reflections, which tends to obscure my wrist bone in photos.

Anything from a decent brand. Stop getting memed by /g/tards who think quartz is bad. It's bad because they can't afford nice things and like to pretend their fucking vostoks and seikos are works of fine art
>>
>>61989157
Clocks, not watch movements, dipshit.
>>
>>61989072
You get what you pay for when you get a quartz watch. A 100 dollar Casio G'shock will lose less than 10 seconds over the course of a week (and many models will negate this via syncing with the atomic clock). But that 10 dollar no-name watch at Walmart will be off 10-15 minutes per week.
>>
>>61989072
>>61989193
The absolute state of /wt/ eh?

I tried doing a little googling and didn't find anything. I'll dig around a bit more and see if I can find any non shit quartz clock movements. What size of clock do you need a movement for?
>>
>>61989235
Wow. Just wow.

Why is /wt/ filled with dummies all the sudden?
>>
>>61989072
You can literally get a chink sweeping seconds hand clock movement for less than a dollar.
You can buy a seiko wall clock that looks pretty much like a Seiko wrist fedora (with or without lume) for about $50. Ronda also makes clock movements so there's that.
Try looking a bit.

I need an analog desk/alarm clock that isn't loud as fuck. Apart from mechanical wristwatches I only have LCD clocks in my room since the 1s ticking drives me nuts at night. So far I'm only researching if these even exist. I'll try looking into early 70's stuff, when manufacturers haven't yet figured out how cheap they can make them. But I recently worked on a 1975 Seiko wall clock and it already had this kind of movement.

>>61989277
>seiko
Nope, still about the same. Same size format, materials (ABS, nylon, etc.), same jewel count (0). Same for Hermle, Junghans, UTS, etc.
>Ronda also makes clock movements
Not that I'm aware of.
>sweeping seconds hand clock movement
Maybe that's a solution but I heard people hearing the buzzing at night.

The SARX in the middle has much crisper edges than the SARB on the left, its more challenging to machine a crisp edge with a transition between brushed and polished finishes than to machine surfaces with heavily rounded shapes and corners.

The SARX also has many more transitions between polished and brushed finishes, better integration between the bracelet end links and the case lugs, more complex to machine bracelet link shapes, and a better quality of brushing applied to it.

Its therefore obvious that the SARX case and bracelet take a lot more work to produce than the SARB bracelet and case.

I tried finding it, but no luck so far. Looks like it's a center seconds movement, right?

Also oddly it has a left-handed balance cock, which is unusual for a Swiss movement, it's more of a Japanese thing.

Do you actually have the watch? If so there should be a manufacturer marking on the mainplate, under the balance wheel.

>You need to spend atleast 5000 on watch to accurately tell the time from your wrist.

The movement MIGHT have came from Japan, but it was definitely made in China by a Chinese company; it's kind of like how you see those suits and dress shoes that have some gibberish like "Forcucci - Italy" on the tag, but it's all made in China.
It can say whatever the fuck it wants on the dial as long as they're honest with where it's made on the back.

not true

>More inaccurate and service needing mecanical movements are better than the quartz movements.

Automatic Watches are more of an homage to the engineering and art that goes into them, rather than reliable timepieces. Theres a reason all the train conductors in Japan wear Quartz Seiko

>The technically advanced the watch is, the less horology it is.

This is not true at all, by definition of horology

>Need a watch with a timer, calender and a alarm.
>Have to go with a 10 000 piece, because a digital watch is not a real watch.

There are cheap auto watches that do that, but like i said if you need a really accurate watch, go quartz. Some people like not having a battery though, they may not always be available.

>Claim to have a love for horology
>Only Rolex and Omega, who gives a fuck about accuracy and progress?

I seldom see people circling jerking those two, specific brands

>Need a versatile collection.
>Many of the almost identical watches on different straps.

You don't need a versatile collection and if someone likes a certain style of watch its no problem, to each their own.

Crazy about my new watch. The dials glow in the dark!

I had been eyeing this watch for a while as the watch face/strap colour scheme was exactly what I had been looking for. I needed a watch I could wear more casually as I have another black/black Armani watch to wear with suits.

I hadn't heard of the brand before and found out they originate in Texas and from what I can get to grips with is that they're very good with details and the leather quality on the straps is great.

Its very true to my heart as its practical first and foremost - the watch has a 22m easy-remove strap so you can mix and match, and the hands and dials glow in the dark which is fantastic for when I'm in the cinema or somewhere I can't use my phone. Really in love with that gimmick and love being able to remove the strap to clean the actual watch. Also comes with a stopwatch which I'm a fan of.

Just really happy with the pickup!

(I believe the RRP was £260 in the UK. Not anywhere near as crazy as some of the purchases here but big for me!)

I'm looking to buy a nice leather strap for my Seiko but I don't want a buckle, I want the same or similar closing system as on my metal strap. This exists right, what do I look for?

whats the best (personally my first) watch I could get for around 300 bucks?
I´d love to have something I could wear everyday and it should be an automatic watch. I´m pretty open when it comes to style so I´d appreciate some suggestions
>>
>>61997570
If you are going to get quartz at least make sure it has GPS.

Strapcode has some leathers with clasps like that.

Neat piece. I know almost nothing about those, or really vintage Citizens in general.

You don't have to wind it or move it for it to work.

Daini Seikosha and Suwa Seikosha were kinda forced to compete with one another in the 70's to produce the best Seiko. Suwa (Grand) "won".

When it comes to quartz I'd go with the King, actually even in the case of manuals and automatics because the King is actually rarer and cheaper. If you're a movement-nazi you always go Grand Seiko but if you don't care you take the prettiest/cheapest/most premium-feel watch.

Ger yourself a paper ricing dial King Seixyko. Bitches will be on your dick from Monday-Saturday (Sunday's church day).

What about Tisell? (South Korea) Is it trash? Is it good? I see conflicting thoughts on forums.

>>
>>62018233
Well, I think it would be more accurate to say that Suwa won in terms of marketing as their Grand Seiko, divers and chronographs became iconic designs.

In terms of mechanical movement design, manufacture, accuracy and reliability Daini was pretty much always better, and this is reflected in multiple Daini mechanical movement designs still being used by Seiko today, and that it was the Daini half of the company that became the modern Seiko watch company, while Suwa became Seiko Epson and only contributes quartz related components for high end Seiko and GS quartz and spring drive movements.

That being said, as far as quartz movements go, the wrist watch sized quartz movement was developed primarily by Suwa and popularized by them, so there are good arguments in favor of the Suwa side of the company for quartz movements. The only reason I would take a King Quartz in preference is that it was Daini that developed the grammar of design styling language and it shows in the designs of the King Quartz models.

vintage Omega on eBay.
>>
Anyone ever have any success finding vintage pieces in pawn shops? Or do they tend to just have a bunch of gaudy, faux-gold trash?
>>
>>62016395
This'll happen at least.
>>
>>62016323
Why the hell do you need a clasp that big? It's not like it's easier to open with gloves because the actual latch is still relatively pretty small.
>>
Is there some custom bezel inserts sized outer: 34mm inner: 27.5mm for my seiko skx013? Tried ebay and selection ia very limited. Or could there be whole new bezels that could fit this watch?

My LM Special arrived today. It's pretty nice and the bracelet fits, which is good as extra links for a 1971 watch could be tough to find.

hello /g/ brainlet here

why can't (or don't) manufacturers make quartz analog watches that tick with a frequency higher than one hertz?
>>
>>62021307
They do.
>>
>>62021340
Oh, okay.

Then why do so many people bitch about quartz chronographs that have sub-second gradations but still tick at one hertz? Shouldn't manufacturers be making low end quartz chronos that tick at 5 or 6 or 8 hertz? Only ones that I know of are the Seiko mecaquartz movements.
>>
>>62021307
There are, but they are rare. Maybe they think 1 pulse/s looks more clean and/or having higher frequency means shorter battery life.
>>
Best Amazon store for NATO and Perlon bands? The last time I trusted Amazon reviews I was left with a bunch of irredeemably chinkshit (which I suppose I should have expected, given the price).

>>
>>62021307
Huh? I think a lot of wristwatches are like that. It's the clocks that suffer from low frequency (and annoyingly loud sound).
>>
>>62021915
Quartz watches that tick more than one per second are rare, though not unheard of. Battery life is the major reason. Bulova precisionist is the most accessible modern example.

>>

At least a Lambo is a Lambo. Everyone understands what it is and can appreciate it even if it isn't their taste. That watch is 100% meme and you are better off buying 10 different Rolex watches, banking the change and having a collection of watches everyone can appreciate and acknowledge as great watches.
