You'd be correct

As an oldfag, I can definitely say that generals are one of the worst things to have happened to 4chan.

They're mostly used as a way to advertise products and keep them on the front page, rather than to seriously discuss anything.

And what tends to happen in generals is people run out of things to talk about, because they have the same thread every day, so they resort to shitposting to keep things going. The general is more of a rotted and decaying zombie kept alive with shitposts, acting as a public billboard and advertisement for products, than anything remotely approaching a genuine discussion.

Before we had generals, people would make threads about things, and if nobody liked the thread, it wouldn't even be replied to. The thread would die on its own. This created a darwinian system where threads either get clickbaity enough, or genuinely interesting enough to be replied to. It meant there was a constant churn of original content - something 4chan hardly even talks about these days.

Ostensibly, we got generals to prevent the boards from being spammed with a single topic all the time, but the crux of the issue there isn't the need for generals, but the need to get rid of spammers and advertisers hijacking the discussion medium to hawk their shitty products.

>>
>>61414486
dpt is a bad example of a general. dpt is focused on discussion and sharing your individual projects. by nature it is not really a general--in fact, its name is daily programming THREAD, rather than general. most generals focus on circlejerking over one specific thing.
>>
I have an idea: generals stay alive in the archive after they reach the end of the board and become text only threads. the point of a general is knowledge sharing and all images can be taken care of before bump limit.
>>
>>61414659
In seriousness though there are more than enough DIY guides and references out there already. There's no need for (quasi-) realtime discussion about it. Follow a guide, pick parts and aim for your budget.
>>
>>61414675
Post in ghost mode in the real archive.
>>
>>61414486
Their quality varies greatly, dpt was the first ever /g/ general, although back then the phrase 'general' wasn't used. Nowadays seemingly every possible topic gets its own general on the board, it's fragmented the userbase a lot, it seems like back in the old days everyone was hopping in and out of threads all the time, nowadays people just stick to their generals.
>>
>>61414673

Most of these have been banished to other boards because of all the newfags that didn't like the anime dense content but that's all of what /g/ was.

The main issue is we've had a large influx of people that came to imageboards for what they provide, rather than what they are. Same observation can be made with IRC chans, BBS or newsgroups actually.

Imageboards are places for people to meet, discuss, exchange knowledge, and mix together. But it's been a few years already since we've seen some board wars, like people think they "belong" to some boards or something. And imageboard/community wars are just equally ridiculous, like people have browsers that cannot lead them elsewhere, like people just stick to a single one... oh wait, they actually do. Now generals go a step further and reduce friction within a community, a friction that is very necessary. People just camp their generals, they don't interact with the rest of the community on other boards, let alone other thread in the same board, identities are born in an anonymous space, and it gives a false sense of "belonging" to something which just has no reason to exist. If we spread ourselves in little gated echo chambers, we may as well go to a website that revolves around that. Like yes, Reddit. And if we need identities and personalities, we may as well post on Facebook.

If I go to imageboards, I expect friction. The different boards just split different interests, and people are encouraged to frequent them all once in a while, and different imageboards have simply rules, cultures and languages. Generals must go, and all the faggots waging stupid "wars" have to follow. I want the internet to be back the way it was in 1995, and anyone that doesn't like that is free to go to the "modern" and "tolerant" (((social networks))).

The alternative is to potentially have several threads all dedicated to that topic.
Generals are created by users and aren't permanent

You clearly don't visit any boards beyond the pleb set. Broaden your horizons.

On /o/ the generals actually make sense. There's ones for motorcyclists, Honda owners, Toyota owners, Miata owners, Australians, long-haul truckers, and people who play car video games, all with their own distinct content and userbase.

wasnt it about proto-generals back in the 80s-90s
>>
>>61417923
it basically was very similar to now, it was just a bigger pain in the ass to get anywhere.
That faggot doesn't know anything and is just getting off on being contrarian. Those who complain about "generals" usually only frequent the wildly popular boards where the mass amount of users is guaranteed to trash a general discussion thread. On slower or more focused boards the generals save a lot of space on the page and prevent otherwise good topics from being shoved off, like what used to happen on /o/ during Aussie hours.
>>
>>61414888
this is /g/ not /b/
>>
>>61415960
Those people will manage to ban generals from 4chan with all their whining eventually, and two things will happen:
>all boards get /_g/ versions, which kill the original board as there's no longer any reason to use them if you want to talk about something in particular instead of just shitpost
>all threads from non-general boards are banned because everything can be considered a general in some way
The hate comes from mostly the fear of turning into something as horrible as /vg/, but that same fear is what's going to destroy 4chan for good one day.
Generals exist because people find them practical, and their level of cancer should be treated on a per-thread case, just like literally any thread ever. If any general in particular gets way too many retarded posts too often, then only that thread needs to be gassed, not all generals in general.
さげる
>>
>>61417003
Exactly. Because before generals existed, nobody ever only checked a board in particular looking for only the subject they were interested in at the same, nope, they sat down and spammed F5 on the top of the first page to shitpost in every thread that showed up there. They also visited all boards to shitpost instead of their favorite ones, obviously.

Oh wait, but you used the reddit comparison. I guess you're invincible.
>>
>>61418501
All that changed is the userbase, and clearly the design didn't scale well. Such an imageboard wasn't meant for the traffic it has today. Generals try to compartmentalize users with a finer grain, but break its very nature in the process.

The existence of imageboards never threatened the rest of the internet. Forums, chat rooms and the like still exist. The issue is that people want to turn imageboards into what they aren't. You're interested in something specific? Cheap chink shit? AK bayonets? E-celebrities? Fine. Have your own place to talk about this specific thing, and you'll be able to create plenty threads on the subject, even have generals on sub-subjects.

4chan is for people to talk with each other on a broad range of subjects, it's not meant to be hijacked to create small independant communities hostile to each other that would be better off elsewhere, nor is it to replace the rest of the entire internet. Reddit, yes Reddit, allows you to create your own little community on a specific aspect. And I don't mean that in a bad way, it's great. And if you don't like Reddit, try some other service that allows that, there's plenty. Just keep in mind it's something different, and that's not what 4chan is.

The problem with this solution is that it's too simple. You are using a sledgehammer instead of a chisel.

People here agree that some generals are good (/dpt/). One solution said is just ban generals that aren't /dpt/? But what happens when the community wants a general for something? Would it be banned? How do we know if it'll be a /dpt/ or one of the lame generals? Do we have a trail period? Do you know how annoying that could be to implement/monitor? Would it allow for second chances?

Keep in mind generals formed organically, the community wanted them. Many generals were formed when they already existed (without the term 'general', so e.g. Thinkpad threads could be in the catalog just as long as the general would be).

One solution I've come up with is to "back-sticky" the generals, so they show up in the bottom of the catalog. They don't expire normally, but a new one is made when they hit /vg/'s post/image cap.

This way they stay out of sight, people who like them can use them, they prevent 1 million cyberpunk/private-tracker threads, and, most importantly, because they are 'back-stickied' we remove for the shitpost IV to keep them alive.

Objectively this. One thing I noticed often in /vg/ is that posting anime really get their neurons firing and accuse for "shitting up the thread" because of posting an anime reaction image despite being related to the topic in hand. Also, I can't get why posting an unironic "dumb animeposter" is becoming a trend on this site.

Ban GPU/CPU shilling and le BFTO how will Intel/AMD/Nvidia ever recover, it belongs to /v/.
Ban consumer grade tech, you can have a separate board for that, that will take away the Apple shilling and shitpost.

The generals are the only good thing about 4chan and are the sole reason why I ever still come back to this website. I rarely ever go on /g/ anymore, but a couple years ago pretty much all the new threads were made by /v/fags asking how to hack computers, or Tyrones asking how to unlock their stolen iphones.

General threads establish conversational direction. For example I only ever go on /an/ for the fungi thread and the plant thread. I wouldn't go there if it wasn't for those threads, but since they exist I give that board frequent traffic.

>then came the sjw's from le reddit and ruined it.
>and the unironic racists
>>
>>61413474
If there had to be one change, just one change to 4chan, user created and moderated sub threads that would act as generals.
They would follow global rules moreso then board specific ones and boards would act as themes.
Instead of bump limits/image ones, you would look at how long a thread can stick around without activity, which on /g/ is 3 hours.
This would allow people who want a community to not get fucked by mods who one day after years decided your continent is low quality, but these diaper threads are just fine.
It may fracture a boards userbase a bit because many people who would go to a general would just bypass the boards main page and go straight to those threads.
An overall quality improvement because the community that set the thread up can act as mod for that thread so people who really don't want to deal with some cocksuckers could ban a user from posting.

also before I am directed to another chan, the issue, at least the main one I see between how it runs and how 4chan runs, is 4chan has some semblance of a community for the boards, from the smallest to the hidden ones, it has more community then that one does, handing user moderation to threads under a theme with just a theme and global rules applying to it would be far better than letting users create boards as ego will have someone create a new board for a topic that already exists.
