So a guy gave me his old computer to re-purpose it as some browsing and light use thread, and his HDD has like 30GB of files he wants, like 7GB of photos in a folder. He only has laptops, and I'm not sure if his one has enough room.

Can I mail that fucking shit via Gmail? Can I send 5GB of files via Gmail? He doesn't even want his HDD because he can't get access to it anyway.

I guess this shows how desktops are still useful, is there a way you can access an internal HDD with a laptop? Some weird SATA-USB adapter shit?

No, definitely not. Every CPU type has a different ISA, instruction set architecture. Assembly is basically using a CPUs ISA to manipulate it registers and memory mapped devices.
There are simple ISAs like motorola and mips and complicated onse like x86.
This is the whole reason C was created as a "high level" programming language. So a program could be portable across machines.

About how much life did I take out of my FX-8350 if I left it on with this attached but no power to fan for about 30 seconds? It smelled nicely toasty in there afterward but nowhere near burnt, and the heatsink was hot to the touch on the top fin.

I set a BIOS startup password on my laptop before flashing it with Libreboot and didn't realize that setting a password also encrypted my hard drive. Now when I try to boot from the drive, either with the flashed laptop or with a different laptop, it asks me for the BIOS startup password, even on laptop which never had it set.

Therefore I can't access the files on my hard drive. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Not sure how to revert to the original BIOS on the laptop since I didn't get the chance to finalize the Libreboot flash (due to not being able to access the hard drive).

Thanks for the answer. Still might boost the i3 to a first gen i5 or i7, just to eliminate the hang on startup.

I have a serious issue with performance with my year-old PC

Every single game I play will have a huge lag spike that lasts for 5 minutes, runs 60fps again for another 2, and then back to huge lag spike. I use a 750Ti meme card, an i5-6400, a z170 and 8GB of ddr3 ram. Pic related is how bad it gets with the Dolphin emulator

So I've decided to learn C with /g/'s recommended book. I thought Sublime Text 3 would be a good choice for a minimal IDE of sorts with some packages installed. While the code is pretty, running it is more difficult than it really should be compared to alternatives.
What packages would you guys recommend I get for it so I can set it up and have it run my code with a key press?
The default console simply doesn't work if your code has a
scanf()
and you can't send a SIGINT in it.
SublimeREPL doesn't support C, also no interrupt signal support.
Terminality messes up your output and input.

One of the functions I'm using is a matlab compiled function written in C (mex file).

The function was compiled successfully but now I get errors when trying to run it.

how would you go about writing script to input multiple tax numbers to check if they are available on website like this;

first i'd find out how i can send inputs to forms in a webpage, because i don't quite know that
then i'd find out how i can access what data the website returns (probably some json bullshit or whatever) - something ad hoc
when i know these things, i'll just use my file to send what i need to send to the right site

i doubt this is very professional or proper, but it will work because you'll have all the pieces

It links to what looks like an old photobucket UI that gives information on the browser/website teh image was taken from, etc. I don't want that. I have a follow-up question concerning AutoRun.
I read a little up on autorun, and it seems on Windows 7 and above, USB drives can't use autorun to automatically run programs anymore, only CD drives can (for whatever reason).

Anyone know how to make a USB drive appear like a CD drive to a computer in 2017?

People over here seem to prefer the traditional style keyboards over the chiclet/island style keyboard, especially in the thinkpads.

In my experience, the ctrl key is very difficult to press in traditional keyboards, especially when dirty/filthy. I've seen it on other people's computers. I keep my keyboard clean.

I probably don't type as much as programmers do, but I do have to type a lot of essay size stuff frequently.

Why do people over here dislike chiclet keyboards and why do they prefer traditional keyboards?

P.S. I do not mean mechanical keybords. By traditional, I mean the membrane ones that are not chiclet.

Someone's laptop has two 3.5 mm jacks. One for sound, one for mic.
That adapter makes it so you can put a headset that has both sound and mic in.
If you tried to plug one in, you would only get sound and not mic, or no sound and mic

During a fit of rage in construction of my first PC, I seem to have knocked over three golden pins on my motherboard's CPU slot. They are still in the motherboard, but they are bent to the side.

My PC turned on once, and I turned it back off with the power supply. Since then I have not been able to get it back on. Is my motherboard toast? Nothing else was hit.

Try bending them back with something like a pincet
Plenty of youtube vids on how to do that

If new allocates memory for an object in C++, what happens when you do something like:
someClass obj;

It still seems to create an object. Does it just float around in memory until the program terminates?
>>
>>61341393
That allocates the object on the stack.
void foo()
{
someClass obj;
}

obj ceases to exist when the function foo terminates, and its destructor is called then.

There should be a section or button for returns

I haven't done it in a while, it may be you have to make an "enquiry about the item", click through some troubleshooting aimed at the bottom of the barrel who don't actually need to return the item, then click on something along the lines of "my problem is still not solved, I definitely do want to return it". Or something.

Either way I'm pretty sure you end up having to contact the seller to arrange it (though I may be wrong). Although if the item is outright broken or not as described you might be able to go through ebay directly.

My mother has an HP deskjet 3637 that refuses to print with unoriginal black cartridges saying they're low despite being full to the brim and printing diagnostic pages just fine.

Anyone has this printer, how do I trick it to print despite it saying there's a low level of ink. I'm going to try installing different drivers to see if it helps, any other input?

Pic related, the piece of proprietary trash.

The cpu works fine and if It didnt I could just overclock an i7 3770k for cheap

I didn't know objects could be on the stack.
Is the heap solely for new and delete then? Is the stack ever used for objects?
>>
>>61341502
This post made me realise the sorry state of printing as an industry

There are almost no consumer options that are even remotely freedom-respecting. Even laptops usually can have their components swapped, very few actually solder everything or implement bios whitelists - it's the exception, not the rule.
>>
>>61341514
>Is the heap solely for new and delete then?
Correct.
> Is the stack ever used for objects?
All the time in C++, that's one of the things which separates it from most other OOP languages.
>>
>>61341549
Thanks.
Coming from Java/C#, already lots of nuances about C++ that I'm getting used to.
What are the advantages to pushing objects onto the stack rather than the heap?

How do I keep my laptop from destroying its Nvidia GPU?

I got fucked on my previous laptop. BGA failure turned it into a doorstop (BIOS won't let it boot without the GPU). The GPU in my current laptop is set to throttle at 90°C, which makes me nervous. I assume limiting the maximum temperature would reduce the damage caused to the BGA by thermal cycles, but Nvidia's drivers seem to have removed the option to limit frames by temperature. Do I really have to set a hard cap on framerate for each application, or are all BGAs are destined for failure, regardless of operating conditions?

Hey, what is the most likely reason for an old ass machine (early 2000s), to be able to boot into BIOS, change and save settings, even get past the POST screen, but still not being able to boot any OS?

I've tried Win XP and it freezes during the installation, while Puppy Linux gets stuck at "loading the kernel" or something like that (live CD).
>>
>>61341541
I know right?, we have open source 3D printers of all kinds and free software to run them, yet when it comes to 2D printing it's all as shitty and expensive as always.

Now, can somebody answer me?, I really hate dealing with this bullshit.
>>
>>61341644
They're fucking full, brand new, yet the printer says there's no ink in them! But I'll try anyway, thanks.
>>
>>61341582
If you're using C++, you're usually concerned about speed. Allocating on the stack is very quick, while allocating on the heap is a fair bit slower (still adds up faster than using a GC in most cases)
C++ does not use a garbage collector like most modern languages, so you need to worry deallocating memory when you have finished using it. The easiest way to be certain that an object is freed when you have finished working with it is to tie it to the lifetime of the scope in which it is used. For example:
void playWithBall()
{
Ball my_ball;
b.bounce();
b.kick();
}

I know that my_ball does not need to outlive the playWithBall function, so I can cheaply allocate it on the stack. Even better, I know that the my_ball will automatically be deleted when I am done playing with it, so I can be sure I don't have a memory leak.
The practice of tying object lifetime to the scope in which it is useful is known as Resource Acquisition Is Initialization (RAII) and is one of the most important patterns in C++.

void playWithBall()
{
Ball my_ball;
my_ball.bounce();
my_ball.kick();
}

I don't have access to the machine currently, but as far as I know, there's only one HDD in it, so it shouldn't have been tampered with since it was last used.

Also, without any installation media, it tries booting off the HDD and finds an old Win XP installation. It gets to that "start windows normally" and other options menu, and instead of booting it shows something along the lines of "last known good configuration" and restarts itself.
>>
>>61341779
Shaking it didn't work, I guess HP is using the "low level" as an excuse not to print with a non-original cartridge. When I print a diagnostics page the ink level on the printer's display shows a single bar. It knows it has ink, but refuses to print.

What would you use to make a inventory management system that eventually will be extended to contain customers, orders etc? And eventually an app that the sales persons could use.
NOTE: this would just be a side project for school and i have only worked with java before
