they're cheaper. my 50€ G80-3000 is still fine after 10 years. 10€ membrane keyboards usually last around 2 years - they might kinda work longer, but some keys take more force to actuate so you throw it away and get a new one.

Uh could you explain why? I've never used one myself, but isn't their purpose the exact opposite?

Or do you need a split one to be able to actually benefit from it?

Hi /mkg/. Once upon a time I stumbled across a firmware editor for the HHKB so that you could reprogram it in various ways. I can't seem to find it now. Does anyone know:
1. If am I simply mis-remembering?
2. If I am not, where this tool can be found?
3. Have you used it before with any success or issues?

I would like to purchase one, but would want to ever-so-slightly tweak the layout from its default, particularly the function layer.
>>
>>60979967

Yeah, but you don't buy those consumer goods DIRECTLY FROM CHINA, dumbass, and for good reason.
>>
Well after about 7 years of typing on a Filco with Cherry MX browns, I thought I'd mix things up and order the same keyboard but with Cherry MX blue switches. BIG mistake. How can the same company that makes such a smooth tactile switch as the browns turn around and make the wobbly, sloppy piece of garbage that is the MX blue switch?

Before I return the keyboard, I just wanted to ask if I got a lemon, or if the switches will smooth out after they break in, or what the hell is going on with this. Is my experience normal?
>>
>>60999803
>2. If I am not, where this tool can be found?
you're looking for Hasu's alternate HHKB controller, everything you need to know can be found on geekhack.

>>60999811
you can get tons of consumer goods directly from china that are just fine, just don't be a retard and don't buy anything that goes in your body or that requires 100% reliability
>>
>>60999868
I have experience with Filco with Browns (typing right now on an almost-10-year-old one), and with Blues on other boards, but not with Blues in a Filco.
With respect to Blues, I have used them on a board (I believe a cheap ol' Rosewill) and they were solid enough. Not wobbly. I have also used them on a friend's "gamer" keyboard of some sort or another, and they were noticeably wobbly, but at the time I remember blaming his custom keycaps for that.

Might be a lemon, because:
A. Not all Blues feel that way.
B. I can't imagine Filco not having worked out how to make Blues feel good after all these years, and having success with other switch types.
>>
>>60999911
>that are just fine
Many counterfeit goods are "just fine" until they stop working after exactly 7 months of use. By the way, they only had a 6 month warranty, lel.
>>
>>60999911
>you're looking for Hasu's alternate HHKB controller, everything you need to know can be found on geekhack.
Beautiful. Thank you. Looks like I have to make or buy his little controller, which is awesome, but does represent and additional expense. Something to think about, at least.

So my rk61 is completely fucked but all in all it served me for a few months and was a good intro to chinkshit keyboards as well as being some good soldering practice for a complete beginner.

hi, I am very autistic, which is better color layout? any suggestions?
>>

semantic layout is best.
one colour for letters (alphas). another for "action" keys (modifiers).
all depends on what you have assigned to those keys.
or just make it all one colour.
>>
>>60998715
There's this guy who made replica model Fs, you can pick one up for a bit over $300. By replica, I mean he did his best to make them as good as the originals.

However the guy's a poorfag and was only able to pay the factory for a limited time run, so orders close at the end of this month I believe. Hopefully the chinks will seize the opportunity to make more, but if they don't then things will go back to being shit for spring lovers.

They're trash that rattle, so clipping won't do shit, and if I remember correctly, they come clipped already anyway.

If you really want clear stabs, you'll have to get the overpriced Zealios shit that's $40, and they only come in PCB mounted (though it has screw-ins).

Or just get Costar stabs like everyone else. Though if you're like me and hate having to fuck with them when you change keycaps, just get Cherry and clip/lube them.

I have a Filco Majestouch, a really old one maybe 6-7 years old with Cherry MX Blues, no wobble very solid. Maybe something has happened in last few years with their build quality.
>>

according to some geekhack users, cherry has replaced their molds with new ones, and filco would be one of the first to get the newest switches, so maybe it's that? or maybe you're just not used to them idk

I currently own a Thermaltake Meka g1 with Cherry MX black switches.

I know it's kinda personal, but where I live there aren't any places where I could test another mechanical keyboard.

Hello /mkg/ guy from last thread asking info on ergo clears.

so here's 2 things I learned from doing. A bit of research and asking around. Please correct if I'm wrong
-62g/67g ergo clears, numbers are referring to bottom out force
-bottom out force of mx clears are around 90g and actuation 67g

With that in mind
-does anyone know an estimate of actuation force for 67g ergo clears?
-I know some here told me ergos are a lighter mx clears is it really the difference of 23g for bottom out force?
-a wasd switch tester is coming later today with mx clears how would this give me a good idea of what to expect on the stiffness of clears(so I can safely assume whatever I feel with the cleats will be much lighter when I use 67g ergos) Or is typing a comepletely a different experience?
>>
>>61006856
gateron browns are fine

the only reason you have to do this cherry mx clear trick (lighter springs + lube) is because cherry mx brown sucks
>>
Is the Tada68 really worth €60 more than a magic force 68?

MF68 is €40 including shipping, while the tada is €100 without shipping.
>>
>>61006911
while i agree with you 100% that gat browns are very good, I just dont see the point of spending on a new kb + an alt set for my keycaps if im just gonna use gat browns again. Which is why im researching as much as i can before getting this and the though of a stiffer brown does interest me, but just not too stiff
>>
>>61007262
it's a personal choice how much you want to spend, but for a high end keyboard tada68 has a great bang for the buck, you get gateron switches and thick pbt dye sub keycaps and it's programmable

when it comes to magicforce 68 a keyboard enthusiast would ideally get the gateron version for around €60 plus better keycaps for around $30-50+, but if you don't want to spend more than €40 then it's still a pretty decent mechanical keyboard

tada68 is $99 with shipping here btw

Anon. It's a keyboard that you'll probably be using for 5+ years. What makes more sense

>use a rubberdome for 3-4 weeks and then have a great keyboard indefinitely
>use a rubberdome for ~1 week and then have a keyboard that's only OK indefinitely

printers with that precision can typically manage cherry stems, I dunno if it's doable but I'd say it's definitely worth trying.

BUT im not sure if its jsut mine or if its normal for gat browns (i used same pbt keycap for my kb, magicforce, and the tester), but the gat browns seems to make a sound after the key rebounds up?

Well gateron switches have a higher pitch, but generally thin ABS keycaps, flimsy aluminium plates, and floating keycap design all make switches sound louder. Cherry browns are normally quieter then blues, but the razor keyboard has all those so its louder

Alright, gonna step into the world of mechanical for the first time. I'm pretty much set on the Leopold FC900R Black PBT w/ front keycaps and Blue Cherry MX switches for reasons not entirely known to myself desu (well-reviewed it seems, want a 10-key for sure, don't need backlighting, like the idea of front print instead of top since I don't look at the keyboard to type anyway) but I'm so used to chicklet keys that I wonder what the transition to blue cherry mx will be like.

Also do these things every go on sale? $120 is not a lot but if I can save money, why not right?

Here's my template in case there's a better option for me:
>Budget
$120 max really

Blue from what I can tell. I don't game a lot and I love typing. Have a 140 WPM with a chiclet keyboard if that matters.

Using a fucking AmazonBasics Bluetooth chiclet keyboard because my laptop's keyboard took a shit after I accidentally spilled some water on it. Used a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard for a while before that.

The feel is the same as any decent rubber dome slider on PCB. It's only the actuation distance that changes. In fact, I have an old BTC 5100C that uses a little capacitive puck under the dome for much the same effect of actuation at the buckle.

Foam and foil is capacitive as well as model F, z leafs and other capacitive spring switches. It doesn't change the fact that topre is glorified rubber dome. It's where all the feel comes from.
>>
>>61008572
>that feels like
But it feels better than any other switch. And it feels NOTHING like rubber domes because the actuation doesn't happen at the bottom.

You're obviously some jaded poorfag retard who never even tried Topre so you're hating on a thing you cannot have.

If I get a tenkeyless, that'll solve the reach problem and save me $5. And if for some reason I decide in the future I need a 10-key, I can just buy a USB numpad I guess.

So now I'm thinking going the FC750R instead of the FC900R. Same thing just w/o the 10-key, right?

because it's more ergonomic. for regular typing it doesn't make much of a difference but if you're a mouse autist like me you want not only your letters totally centered with your monitor but you also want as equal arm/mouse space on both sides as possible. so fullsized is a no-no, even tenkeyless has too much on one side for me. 75% and lower is optimal for centered and not hitting your mouse on the side of your keyboard. while also having a numpad/control pad of some kind on your left. so left, center, and right are all equally spaced and centered with enough buffer for movement on the left and right. not that magiforce is very wide, but it's only one vertical set of keys smaller than a small tenkeyless.

I was eyeballing that one, but I don't think I'd like the smaller shift key and the cramped layout. One thing I hated about my laptop's keyboard (And this bluetooth one I'm presently confined to) is the lack of breathing room. At the same time, I want to reduce space, short of going for a 60% (I do enjoy the F key functionality).

Plus, if I wanted to swap out keycaps, it'd be a lot easier with the 750R it seems.

>>
>>61011175
i agree on the huge spacebar. i want to see smaller spacebars and split spacebars. in this day and age you don't need to stick with the "standard" 6.25u spacebar. if you build a reasonably popular product, chinks will make keycaps for it. 3u spacebars are pretty common already. you can use 2.25-2.75u spacebars (more common on ~40% layout keyboards) so people can use shift keys as an alternative to convex spacebars.

I use blues atm because they're entry level and I bought the hype but they feel mushy as shit when actually typing. Does the actuation force difference of greens actually make them feel better? More tactile? Or are cherry switches not even the way to go. I've heard very good things about matias.

You should have seen how yellowed it was when I got it. The seller used white balance adjustment and the keys were still this color. I was lucky that a ton of the case marks were just old pen and pencil from people using the flat parts to write on. It used to be connected to some kind of hospital mainframe apparently. It had a big sticker that said outpatient on the bottom. It was still in service when it was pulled this year. Now that's long term functional.

Other than a shit ton of dust and yellowing of the ABS though, it was honestly like you said in pretty great shape.

And though it took for fucking ever to clean and relube all the switch plungers, they feel almost new. The only thing that's stabalized is the spacebar but nothing binds if you press it on the edge. Super pingy board too because of the both the massive stem springs and the capacitive leafs that act like springs.

It's fine. He should have just spent a couple bucks for a sheet of glass and taped some sandpaper to it so he could smooth out the outside of the case.

I can imagine, my Apple extended keyboard was practically orange thanks to it being exposed to sun light for the past 20 odd years. Unfortunately with them though they use Alps switches, and once Alps get dirty you're basically fucked. No matter how much sanding, lubing, or cleaning you do you can't get them to feel as good as they did when brand new. Your board on the other hand is probably in the best condition possible now thanks to the amount of work you put in to it.
If you have any pictures of the refurbishment process you should definitely post them on Deskthority

From what I know ergo clears are clears with a different spring. The spring probably depends on where you buy them from or if you do it yourself.
Clears apparently are supposed to have the gradual high bottom out force to subtly get you to stop bottoming out. Obviously some people don't like this which is why ergo clears exist.
There are also Zealios which are manufactured by Gateron and are supposed to be like clears with a different spring and lubed. Apparently very smooth and tactile. (You can find a Zelios keyswitch tester on AliExpress).

The brushed aluminum is a major pain in the ass when it comes to cleaning it. The dust gets stuck in the grooves that give the aluminum that brushed effect. I recently got Corsair Strafe instead of K70, got it with Red switches, for me the matte plastic is much easier to keep clean.
>>
Guys. I bought a K70 Lux RBG a little while ago. Within a few a week or so, the keyboard started squeaking like crazy. I read you can lube the stabilizers up with lithium grease. Tried that.... well the space bar stuck in the 'sunk' position. As in after I did that, it's permanently stuck down somehow. Rendering the spacebar, and effectively the keyboard useless.

I picked up a Ducky One after this fiasco and I've been loving it.

Now my question is, who the hell will repair a K70? It'd just be nice to get it going again in case I want to switch back to it from time to time or even sell it, since it just sits in my closet. A week old keyboard I somehow fucked up.

Mechanicalkeyboards.com won't touch it, they only work on keyboards they sell.

Corsair won't touch it after I was honest and told them I'd lubed it with lithium grease.

I know I'm a fucking idiot, but I kinda want my K70 working again. Suggestions?
>>
>>61016283
gee i don't know man. pull it back up again?
>>
>>61016310

Wish it were that simple. That didn't work. Forgot to mention I fucked it up even more by trying to fix it. It needs a new space bar, and new stabilizers and possibly new space bar switches. I'd post a picture but i'm too lazy.

>>
>>61016283
how did you "lube" the switch?
>>
>>61017110

I didn't purposely lube the switch. I just used a little on the stabilizer bar. I don't know what the hell happened but the keyboard just sunk down after that, and never popped back up again. I got frustrated and fucked it up even more. Now I have a non functioning K70 that's in perfect condition apart from that.
>>
>>61017110

But to answer your question IIRC I used a little lithium grease on a q-tip and just dabbed it on the stabilizer bar. Maybe the kind I used wasn't plastic safe or something.

Long story short:
Moving out to a bigger place, and I'm setting up two additional long desks with PC peripherals for whenever friends (or friends of friends) happen to visit to play PC games on LAN. It happens once or twice a month. Ideally, mouse keyboard, mousepad, monitor, cables, etc are all cable managed and just hanging below the desk ready for their personal PC to plug in.

Keyboard is one of the items. I'd be getting 4 of them, so I'm OK with non-authentic switches, but would prefer if it didn't look like gamer trash. I want it to be relatively good quality, but a low-key appearance.

While I trust my friends enough to not steal shit, I'm still somewhat iffy about letting friends of friends come over, and don't want my peripherals walking away one night. The more LEDs it has and the fancier it looks, the more likely I think someone will want to walk away with it. Peripherals with fixed cables will have the cables locked down below the desk (see pic), and monitor will be wall-mounted, etc.

>Budget
Low. Preferably $50 ~ $60.

>Location (continent at least)
USA.

>Preferred switch type
Doesn't matter, but not rubber dome. I'd think Kailh or Gaterons would work fine. Red/Blue/Brown variants would work fine.

>Layout
Standard ANSI, it's got to be something familiar to people coming over. Tenkeyless or Full size. I think Tenkeyless would be cheaper. It at least still needs function keys since many games have keys bound to those by default.

>Form factor
Fixed cable (will lockdown cables underneath the desk), preferably no floating keycap style, since keycaps are exposed and easy to break off (especially ESC key).

>Backlight
None, preferably.

>Previous/current keyboards
Irrelevant, I wouldn't be using these.

I think a basic looking Rosewill or Filco keyboard would work best, but ironically these are some of the more expensive options around, and when buying 4x every peripheral, even 4x $50 keyboards is $200.
>>
>>61018056
Why not just get $10 rubber domes if you're paranoid about your friends?
>>
>>61018056
Alternatively, I'm just thinking about getting 4x spill resistant rubber dome keyboards for a much lower price. Like the Logitech K120 or something.

Which might be better than a chinese knock off mechanical keyboard, in terms of overall durability.

>>
>>61015254

>>
>>61018186
Well, like I said I trust my friends enough. We all used to go to a PC cafe that recently closed down 2 months ago. Fun times were had there, but want to do the same thing at my own place, but in a Bring-Your-Own-PC kind of way.

My direct friends I do trust, but if they want to bring 2 other dudes that I don't know, yeah, it might be best that I get something like a Logitech K120 instead, now that I think about.

I think spill resistance would be a bigger factor for dudes bringing sodas into my house than per-key-longevity that I usually get with good mechanical keyboards.

And if they don't like the rubber dome, they can just bring their own keyboard, too.

The idea was that if I supply the peripherals, then they only bring a PC tower, and if they only bring a PC tower, it should be easy as pie to see when someone's leaving with something more than just the PC tower.

Also have a few friends that preferred the PC cafe style as they didn't have to tow all their own shit back and forth. But I think BYOPC is a decent enough tradeoff.

Shitty $5 dell keyboard, I've never used a mech before

I was looking at a Logitech g810 and corsair z70 and realized they are likley overpriced due to branding and there may be better options out there. I am aware RGB is seen as meme-y and unpopular at the moment but I like it. I see in the FAQ that corsair is a no-no due to some compatibility issues, and the g810 has proprietary romer-g switches unlike the commonly accepted cherry ones.

additionally, I was drawn to the g810 first because it looks like an actual adult device and not a tryhard gamur toy.

My Matias Ergo Pro has made me even more autistic. Now I need a board that can tent (it's great) and has soft palm supports (comfy AF). I don't love the wobble of the keys, the fact that they aren't PBT, the fact that they aren't backlit, the fact that I don't have a volume roller and the fact that it's not metal. I REALLY want a volume roller.

I've been out of the keyboard game for a while, can someone recommend a board that can tent and also is better that the Matias in the ways I outlined? I think I'm too far gone to find something I want. :(

but really think more about the form factor so you don't regret buying a fullsize keyboard (the main reason i got into mechs in the first place was that i got sick of the bulkiness of my membrane gaming keyboard) and if you plan on upgrading the keycaps, the good keycaps usually don't have shine-through legends and you'd be better off with a pure white backlight or no backlight
