Has anyone done the Intel ME firmware update for their Sandy Bridge Thinkpads? What battery life checking utility should I ask the potential seller to send screenshots of?
>>
>>60929709
lenovo's power manager will tell you how many cycles the battery has seen

it will also tell you it's full charge Wh capacity and it's original design Wh capacity, although this one can be inaccurate if the battery has not been calibrated in awhile, but any other battery checking utility would just give the same number

I might be a pleb, but what's wrong with new keyboards? I get that it's a bit different, but it's not as bad as people say
>>
>>60930179
theyre a bit different feeling apparently (wouldnt know Im perfectly happy with the one my T430)
and they have a very bastardized layout compared to a regular desktop keyboard where the older classic keyboard was a bit closer to a regular keyboard.
that said the new keyboards are said to have less flex

honestly both keyboards are pretty nice feeling and especially if youre coming from a shitty laptop like me and are used to using shitty keyboards it really doesnt matter which one you use.

My t420s screen stays black when I boot. It beeps after booting and flashing the light from the webcame with 1 - 3 - 3 - 1 beep which comes out to DIMM or Mobo problems.
What the fuck do I do? I took out the RAM, put it in the opposite slots and retried, do I need a new mobo?
Where do I get a cheap one from china or something, its not even the nvidia one, I'd replace it myself if its not too hard or is the price better to just get a new laptop?

Flashed my x60T to Libreboot but now the screen doesn't work because it turned out to be one of the screen versions that wasn't supported. Taking this as an opportunity to upgrade to a SXGA+ screen.

Libreboot supports both x60T SXGA+ screen versions, BOE-Hydis HV121P01-100 and HV121P01-101. Not sure what the difference between the two is though. Do both of these work with the stylus? I think I remember reading that one is glossy and the other is matte. Can someone confirm this and which distinguish is which?

Also, any reputable sellers out there? I've found a few panels on eBay but there's barely any info provided besides the model number. I have a feeling the sellers barely know English. No ad mentions anything about stylus support, matte/glossy, and anything about ThinkPads.

X230 with 9 cell battery. If you prioritise battery life over display quality, you could opt for a non ips screen too. I use mine for general office stuff, fucking around with HTML / CSS and browsing. 7-10 hours of battery life on average, sometimes more. Being in Hong Kong is probably going to be advantageous in acquiring replacement and upgrade components too.

think my t420 is dying lads. since building my ryzen machine it's been lying in my bedroom which is ridden with damp. i booted it up in between then and now and installed a base gentoo system on it and then left it there. yesterday i installed a new kingmeme ssd, ran tails on it for about half an hour and noticed that it wouldn't boot unless i took the battery out for 5 seconds. today i turn it on and the screen looks "red shifted", on a white background it looks as if the red is shifting and oscillating, the fan exhaust smells musty and the problem with turning it on and off is getting worse. has anyone got any clue of what to do? i tried the funny static discharge power button trick, seemed to do nothing.

all thinkpads up until 2016 have shit screens that use low quality PWM panels that will fuck up your eyes; extremely noticeable especially on low brightness

the screen is arguably the most important part of the laptop, the part that interfaces that interfaces with the user

you can get the power consumption from the battery using powertop and it's clear that it drains a fuckton of power by comparing it hard blocked and unblocked
the iwlwifi module has a power_save parameter that TLP uses, it works for a while saving a couple of watts and then dies requiring you to disable it if you want it to work smoothly for a reasonable amount of time.

I have been using 16.04 but 17.04 would work as well. Must be the comfiest distro thanks to LXDE. Gnome is such a piece of shit.
Al thought you can get 8gb ram in T61 but the ram is very expensive because it is DDR2 (60$ for one 4gb stick) in total of 120$. It would more worth just selling it and getting T400 or T410 instead, with support for DDR3

>I don't feel like it would be worth as a NAS
why? I'm using an old toshiba laptop with an external HDD over USB2.0 as a media server, works just fine.
Transfer speeds do not exceed 100Mb/s, but for basic home media server that's fine.
And since thinkcentre is not a laptop you could upgrade the NIC and get faster speed if you wanted to.

>>
>>60951612
I don't think it's an ultrabay, just an unswappable DVD drive. You'll also be sorely disappointed in the CPU capabilities, those ULV Core 2 Duos have aged like milk. Best case scenario, you're looking at a third of the single-thread performance of your X230. Even a Yonah T60 will outperform it. Certainly won't be running lots of browser tabs even with 8GB of RAM.
>>
>>60952084

He's running a full-voltage Ivy Bridge i5/i7 right now. Do you really think he won't notice the huge fucking drop from that to a ULV Core 2 Duo? I run a Core 2 Duo myself, but it's a full-voltage T9300, not the absolutely anemic shit the X300 and X301 used. The difference between this and the T2700 I was on before was visible in normal usage, and the SU9400 in the X301 is even slower than that.

Slow cpu just means that things load slower. It does not make the machine crippled. Like a slow car can go successfully travel A to B. I see no harm on using those cpus.

All thinkpads from the year 2008 (Nehalem architecture) which haves AMT/ME and vPro are not botnet free. These include XX30 niggers and XX70p computers (not sure on Dell lineup).
You can get libreboot via commandline if your system supports libreboot and you got all the necessary parts to do so. You can flash it, via extra equipment if your machine does not support it, and the same goes for coreboot (why go half way when you could go all the way).

So does a Pentium M have Intel ME and or Intel AMT? How about vPRO? Both no. Because there is no remote managing capabilities (other than PXE) it's botnet free computer in my book with Trisquel installed of course.

Yes, there's a huge difference. HD3000 is slower, but more importantly can't do DirectX 11 / OpenGL 4.0 / HLSL Shader model 5.0. Pretty much all modern games and many modern 3D productivity applications rely on these APIs (they were all a huge leap) so modern games will actually run pretty well on an HD4000 - even quite demanding stuff will work if you turn down settings because it's at least compatible. Pic related is The Witness which runs at 1366x768 at 40fps on medium which is pretty damn good. It can also run MGSV:TPP on lowest. HD3000 can basically not even boot these games. And stuff that still is compatible will run terribly. You're basically stuck with source engine games from 2007.

It's futureproofing really - any graphics card pre OpenGL 4.0 is insufficient nowadays, you may not need it now but there could easily be a point in the future where you find the HD3000's causing whatever pain in the arse you've encountered.

Then I should get X230?

>Intel ME is present on all Intel CPUs, regardless of the computer manufacturer.
If I were to use a laptop without Intel ME, would Pentium-M and Pentium-4M powered laptops safe from this issue, which I greatly assume that they are because intel wasn't too keen on these kind of features back in the day. My other question would that, is it safe to use such old hardware? Meaning that there might be some vulnerabilities just waiting for shit to hit the fan eventually.
Again I would assume that there is no malicious code in this machines' BIOS that could harm my opsec.

It's a bit of shame because sdcard slots tend to work quite nicely on GNU/Linux otherwise. Oh well, those sdcard usb adapters are cheap and should do the trick.
>>
>>60958170
>those sdcard usb adapters are cheap and should do the trick.
My goal was to hide bootable sd card into the expresscard plug, so it's always there just in case my wangblows refuses to boot. I don't want to carry extra bigass usb card reader outside of laptop. If I'd want to use USB drive I'd use my USB 3.0 flash drive I got on my keys.
>>
>>60957866
>x230. x220, t420 and t430 cannot
Are you talking about the SD card slot?
or the ExpressCard?
Both can boot, but I think you need to patch the BIOS or use libreboot.
>>60958170
>sdcard usb adapters are cheap and should do the trick.
What about the speed?
>>
>>60958272
>Both can boot, but I think you need to patch the BIOS or use libreboot.
?????????????
are you seriously implying I'm gonna play with installing shitboot just to later use windows?
"Modded" BIOS (aka. Oleh's bios) can't do that, because this reader is on PCIe bus instead of USB. It has to be implemented in BIOS to recognize PCIe devices as bootable.
Also libreboot on these models? what?
x220/x230/t420/t430 CAN'T boot from sd card slot. Period.
Expresscard is bootable if you use real SATA controller in it. If you use EC<>SD adapter it won't be bootable for sure.
Also it still misses the point. This small bracket: >>60956293
won't hold any usb device in it.
>>
>>60958077
I'm very, very happy with my X230. Even before I got an eGPU it could pretty much do everything I wanted. Runs After Effects, Photoshop, Agisoft Photoscan - pretty much everything like a dream with the i7 model and lots of ram. It's my only computer and it does everything I need. I only want to downgrade to an X301 because I'm going to put my desktop back together for the workloads I'm running into and it's then surplus to requirements.
>>
>>60958396
Do you carry it around or use it as a stationary machine?

>Or if you use ExpressCard SSD.
No. Any of this model will not boot from EC, even if you use one of these rare ssds. It has to be REAL SATA controller, eg. HP p400i via eGPU adapter. And I was never really able to boot from SAS drives in my old x230, it was just printing config menu in bios.

it probably will if you're shoveling your laptop in and out of a tightly packed bag all the time

I would return it if you bought it without knowledge of this damage.
>>
>>60958420
Both, I have a dock with keyboard, mouse, phone, printer, graphics tablet and controller plugged in. I press one button and go. (If I have eGPU plugged in I have to disable it from the same eject menu, then reenable my HD4000 from device manager)

It's basically the best of all worlds. The laptop itself is only a little thicker than 2cm and I have the IPS so usability is really high with just the laptop, when I plug it in and have the eGPU on it's then absolutely powerful enough to play all the latest vidya at 1440p 60fps and get CGI work done. Just with the HD4000 alone I can still play new games on absolute lowest, and indie titles on medium.

Now I should be satisfied with it, but I'm going to need more raw multithread CPU power in the near future, that's why I want to upgrade. Otherwise this would do me for a few years until the prices of quad core TB3 laptops (Like the Dell 5480) come down. In total I paid £225 for the X230 after selling my X220 for £175, my eGPU dock was €70 and the GPU I had already. Basically the price/performance is INSANE but it's probably only valid for another two or three years before it's insufficient as a performance machine. It should already be insufficient, but intel have been really shitty at updating their mobile chips. It took until skylake before intel's gimped 15w mobile chips started catching up with their 35w ivy bridge designs.

So 300$ is the maximum for X230?

What about throttling/ heating issues? and bad battery life because of 3rd gen CPU?
Also what about the keyboard?

I already have T420 as stationary machine but I need something more portable.
At most I'd use it to run VM to play some games, nothing fancy (RA2,C&C,etc), PS for dank meme, and watching chinese cartoon.
So I was thinking maybe I don't need to spend extra $$$ on something That I won't utilize properly and spend that money on SSD/RAM.

How do you know the screen is IPS?

No, it stubs out everything but the init code which is necessary to stop the chip from shutting itself down. Even Libreboot is going to do this instead of removing it on SandyBridge, because they haven't been able to fully RE the x220.

Their build quality is bad compared to other series such as X, T, and maybe even the defunct Z and R series. And they usually are lower specced.
And legend has it that some models just died for no apparent reason. Although that happens to all of the consumer lines...
