Thank you for making this thread. I asked this in another thread but this is where it's most appropriate
I have a t420 coming and am wondering if getting a msata SSD is worth it. I was planning on getting a cheap 32gb one just to boot from, replacing the regular drive with a SSD and placing the old drive in a caddy. Also does anyone know if replacing the i5 with an i7 is worth the 40 bucks? Or will it be so marginal that I'm better off just keeping the i5?
>>
>>60907048
if you mean the dual-core i7 then no it would not be worth it at all

a quad-core i7 would have a significant performance boost though, but how much performance you need is up to you

and you should abandon the old drive, do not stick an HDD in your laptop they are shit
>noise
>power consumption
>reliability

just get a big SSD
>>
>>60907082
I kinda wanted to keep the old drive just for redundancies but I see what you are saying.

My T420s arrives tomorrow but I already have buyers remorse and have decided I'm going to also get an X220 to be truly small.

What do I look for in a good X220?

I currently have the T510, getting the T420s, then X220... so I'll have the whole range of sizes. Should be comfy.
>>
Why T420 is no longer recommended?
>>
My ThinkPad randomly vibrates. It sounds like somebody's doing digging down the road or something. I only recently bought it but don't want to return it (lazy + got one in perfect condition despite being grade B). It's random and I don't believe it's the HDD (which I'm replacing with an SSD soon anyway). What do? I've never had to repair tech before.
>>
What ultraportable laptop do you recommend?

I have T420 and use it as my daily machine, but soon I'll be spending long period of time away from home, and I want something to use as media consumption device, at most I'll be need to play 1080p video files.

Battery life isn't important, small size is important since I want to have only one bag with all my stuff (clothes, toiletries, EDC, etc), and I'll be upgrading the drive to SSD.

I've considered getting PC tablet, but it was to thick, and since X230 specs are too much for what I intend to do.
X220 seems like a good idea, opinions?

Or should I look into surface pro?
>>
>>60908021
I am using the T420 and I like it, it can everything I need (you can play minecraft with it without lags) and is reliable, also you can replace the hd screen with a hd+ screen. I don't shit about the T520 though and dont have any experience with...
>>
>>60908021
T520 is inflated T420, if you plan to use it as stationary machine then W520/T520 is what you looking for if not then T420 is a compromise between large screen size and portability.

X230 have better hardware but you probably need it even if you watch X265 1080p since sandy bridge can do that perfectly, and the new keyboard travel distance feels shallow IMO.

I have X220 with battery slice, I use it when I'm on my work days (work for 3 days then take 3 days off) and the battery last without the need to charge it whenever I'm at work, I get around 10-12 hours of it.

Hey /tpg/, I got a T400 from a family friend for free. The hard drive was dead as a doornail but that was easily solved by getting a new SSD on the cheap. I also got the Windows XP, Vista and 7 install discs with the computer. I proceeded to install Win 7 but didn't notice until after I was done and installed updates that it was 32-bit. Despite the fact that the computer has 4 gigs of RAM. Who the fuck uses this shit anytime after 2009?

Anyways, is there a way for me to get a legit copy of the 64-bit OS using the product key for the 32-bit version?

Can anyone give me the gestalt on X220/x230 screen upgrades?
I know that the simplest is to just upgrade to the IPS panel that was available in it, since it is just plug and play.
I also know that there are some 1080p mods, but they are not as easy to do. I know that there is one that makes the display port on the dock unusable, and then there is the Nitrocaster board, which allows for the use of the dock display port if properly set up from my understanding.
I could of sworn there was some other mod too, but I can't find it now.

How do these higher resolution screen effect battery life? I'm assuming they make it shorter, but by how much?
>>
>>60913182
I probably could share it, but where would I upload the ISO, and why would you want it? Windows XP was already dead in terms of support when I graduated middle school three years ago.

As for the memory, there is only a single 4GB stick in there right now and I have a spare 4GB DDR3 stick lying around. So, in theory I could have 8GB (the maximum supported by the T400), but with the 32-bit OS, I'm limited to 2.46 GB because of the integrated graphics. I am wondering if I could recover the roughly 1 GB of memory reserved by the integrated graphics if I turned on dedicated only in the BIOS. This is not going to be my main machine (I got a T530 running Linux), it was just going to be used to run Windows-specific programs for university that may not work on Linux, as well as the accounting software for my family's small business.

I've got a T410 I'm looking to put up on eBay and I'm wondering what might be a good price?

Specs:
i5 540M @ 2.53GHz
8GB DDR2 @ 535MHz (7-7-7-20)
NVIDIA NVS 3100M 256MB
500GB Hitachi HDD
BIOS Whitelist for WiFi

It's got a stock 2 wifi cards: the stock Intel 6200 AGN and an Atheros AR928X.

I have a 2 port USB 3.0 expresscard (GMYLE), a DVD/CDRW Ultra Bay, a spare HDD Ultra Bay caddy, and a stock AC adapter.

I also have a Docking Station Series 3 (no keys).
The battery is 8.7Ah and is stock.

It's good cosmetically minus a small piece of the bottom right corner is broken, but I have the piece and can glue it back.

I just redid the thermal paste with Arctic Silver MX4.

Do you think I could get $300 + shipping for that?
>>
>>60913584

1)t420 is ivy bridge upgradable

>>
>>60914362
2) You save like $20 and lose USB 3 by not getting ivybridge

As for 1, lol. No. It's not just upgradable. There is not a single person on this board who has done the upgrade. You know WHY I know that? Because they wouldn't be recommending it. I've done it. You will break everything flashing coreboot and then struggle to get a working distro due to coreboot's compatability issues, and god forbid you need Windows - you'll need to reinstall Windows as Legacy and break compatibility even more. Ivy Bridge on xx20 is a fucking meme, literally NOBODY does it, and there is no reason to when an Ivy Bridge series ThinkPad is ~$20 more.

>>
>>60914840
It might. Have libreboot devs even confirmed that Ivy will work when it comes to xx20?

They said they might give up on making it fully libre because they can't completely get rid of ME, they're planning on just stubbing it out like you can do with coreboot already and call it a day if they don't crack it by year's end.

I somehow doubt they can magically get Ivy working better than coreboot, which has worked on xx20 systems for quite some time now. If anything, they're going to borrow coreboot code to do it.

Yo /tpg/,
You memed hard enough for me to buy a W520 with a dock (and a bunch more irrelevant tp stuff), and now I have a problem that is probably a dock problem in general, but might be a thinkpad problem.
Seemingly randomly (sometimes it works consistently, sometimes it doesn't work consistently) when I disconnect from my dock my laptop shuts down immediately, so I think it just doesn't have power suddenly.
This happens with a full battery, and then if I wait a couple of seconds it will turn on with the press of a button.
My best guess is either that it is somehow not connecting/disconnecting correctly, though I'd think that it would simply switch to battery as a laptop does when the cord is tugged. Or that this is a unique fault of the dock/thinkpad and I need to replace something.
Please.
Halp.

>what do you need that speed for?
???????
To wait less for the files to move into another drive? Are you fucking serious?
All external HDDs got read/write speeds of at least 100MBps. USB 2.0 is 28MBps in ideal situation of just one big file being transferred. Even my cheap as fuck Sandisk 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive has read speeds of 150MBps.

Yes, actually. Just enable Vt-d in the settings.
I had that jury-rigged setup for a while, and it worked pretty well for what it was. I paired it with a 960, and between that and the i5 in my x220, it ran just about everything I threw at it at 1080p 30fps with drop (even stuff like The Witcher 3). The CPU will be a huge bottleneck, though. Feel free to ask any other questions you have about this setup.

So I can't just simply unplug the EC PCIe adapter and call it a day, then.
What do I do? Do I enable/disable the device via, say, Device Manager on Windows and then reboot to use/remove the eGPU?
Sounds kinda bothersome, but I could get used to it if it gives me a fair increase in graphics performance compared to the housefire 54nm NVS 5400M...
>>
>>60921910
I have no idea how the hell you'd do it with windows
but with esxi when I do gpu passthrough I toggle it under the pci pass through settings, then when I reboot I can't use the device at all on the physical machine.
Then I can set VMs to be able to receive the passthrough device, and about 70% of the time it actually passes through and works

Since it's a laptop just stick with a normal egpu setup. Those are finiky enough as it is, no need to throw pci passthrough in to mess it up even more.
>>
>>60921949
I'll just go with dual boot, then.
I have been on the edge of dropping back to 7, but something tells me that if I should ever see the need of using Windows it should rather be 10 Pro or Enterprise; Home just plain sucks because of all the limitations on telemetry and stuff.
I'm already on LTSB and to be fair I don't see much of an improvement. I don't know if it has to do something with the fact that I'm using this crappy Hitachi HDD that squeaks at times, but I tried using dGPU only at one time just to find out the performance dropped about 20%.
>inb4 gaming on a laptop, let alone a business grade one
Yeah, I know, but my possibilities are limited and every day that passes on I have less time to be at home, so that's why I'm going with this setup for the times when I'm home and maybe disable the dGPU altogether since it is kind of battery hungry.
Sorry for the blog.
>>
>>60922002
Honestly if you've got the money for an egpu I'd just say keep the thinkpad as a general use laptop, then find an older used gaming laptop for when you're on the go.
You can find some laptops that perform extremely well for 3-400, and if you send a bit more you could get one of those turbo gaymen laptops with mxm gpus and you could replace the gpu after a while when you want better performance.
>>
>>60922020
What about that EliteBook 8770w I keep hearing about? Or are there any other models with MXM graphics?
>>
>>60922046
No idea about that model, but I had an 8740w and it had an mxm gpu
But my problem with HPs is they never seem to be able to cool themselves properly
Sure probably a more moden gpu would output less heat, but the laptop is still going to run hotter than hell under load.
>>
>>60922058
I'll just have to keep on a lookout, then. Oh, well, thanks for the advice. I might just pump up the CPU to a 3x20QM to give it a slight future proofing and maybe increase iGPU performance.

Just got my T420s

>Win 7 Pro product key provided by ProdKey does not activate Windows 10 when I install from scratch
>the Win 7 Pro product key on the sticker in battery compartment did activate Windows 10
>Chrome is already installed and the BIOS date is in 2012 so I know they guy fucked with it
>computer has some Intel BootAgent bullshit getting in the way of BIOS options
>install Windows 10

realize the seller misrepresented the monitor size as 1600 x 900 but it's limited to 1080 x 768 ... which makes me think this might actually be the 1366 x 768 monitor???

Maybe it is a driver issue. Updating Win10 right now then will download the Lenovo drivers.

Shouldn't the display go into max resolution without manufacturer drivers? Did the seller (or someone) replace the LCD?

If this is in fact a screen that wasn't listed on the ebay listing.... can I make the seller pay return shipping?

Also the topcase has a chip in the corner but I looked again on the product photos and it's there...wasn't disclosed in the text though.

What do?
>>
>>60922212
the resolution problem is because you don't have the graphics drivers installed yet

look up the serial number on lenovo's site, it'll tell you all of the original hardware specs, screen resolution etc

>>computer has some Intel BootAgent bullshit getting in the way of BIOS options
this is a problem
>>
>>60922273
I was able to get around it and the Lenovo bios doesn't have any of the power on / administrator / HD passwords set, so I'm good. BootAgent is just some thing where it looks to a LAN or WAN connection to boot an image. Seems sloppy that they left it on there... and also very sloppy that the fucking BIOS date is 5 years ago.

Also I'm confused about why the product keys don't match (sticker and extracted from ProdKey). the sticker looks like it is coming up on the sides, but it appears to be genuine.

The ProdKey supplied key did not activate Win10 but the one on the sticker did.
>>
just got a new w520 and also a 1080 led screen.. problem is when i installed the new screen it didn't work. so then i tried switching back to the original and now that doesn't work either.
what the fuck do i do
I made sure it worked before i messed with the screen. it has an output to tv but i can't get it to output to either screen

Something is wrong, that is not normal. Do what the other anon said and check your settings for oddities

Got my T420s up and running with Windows 10

It's

C O M F Y
O
M
F
Y

I should have not waited to put W10 on my T510. I'll do that this weekend.

I like the small size so much. Going to buy an X220 when I see a good one.

>>

I downloaded the Win10 ISO from the MS site

Used some tool to make it bootable USB

Input my Win 7 Pro product key, according to the sticker on this chinkpad I bought on ebay

Win 10 activated as a Pro version

no fuss no muss
>>
>>60924107
I thought that product key was for Win7 only.
Maybe you're using "handycapped" option?
>>
>>60924130
I was reading up on how to do that, but I never was presented with the option to do so. I just entered the key I had and went with it.

Downloaded the ISO straight from the MS website about a week ago.

I dunno.

How sturdy are the internal SATA connections for T420/X220?
I want to get few small sized SSDs. and install different OSs on it, and swap it very often, Just like RPi. and by doing so I'd get rid of multibooting hassles.

Most sellerrs are lazy and just use pre activated windows installs using either generic keys that will stop working in 7 days, or just use some sort of activation tool.
>>60922212
>Shouldn't the display go into max resolution without manufacturer drivers
no, and don't use the lenovo drivers for graphics they're really out of date 99% of the time, and 1024x768 is almost always the default res when you dont have drivers.

>>60925958
Wow you're both retarded and partially wrong
That's the other way round where you put the x220 keyboard in the x230
And that's not bios it's the embedded controller
You tape off the two pins because they've been separated in the x230
Which you also don't even have to. You can just leave them alone and nothing happens

Use a backpack, bags suck unless you have the habit of using it on one side one day, then on the other one next day, and so on.
Besides, they distribute weight more equally on your back and allow you to carry your shit without having to smoosh and force it all in.
