What's the best music player available? I didn't buy in on the Sanasa meme back in the day and now they're discontinued and stupid expensive.

All I need is for it to not sound like shit and read music, especially free formats like Opus/Vorbis, off an SD card.

I use a cucked phone with no microSD slot so it doesn't matter to me what SD form factor it uses. I want something small because hauling my Nexus 6 around just to play music is ridiculous.

Real simple Breh. I could as I already downconvert my DSD and 24/192 flac library to 24/48 flac. The real kicker is I ditched iTunes in 2010 and my MacBook and media server run Devuan + Cinnamon. Importing into the IOS music app is impossible thanks to Apple DRM but dragging and dropping into a 3rd party app has been easy in *nix for about 7 years now thanks to libimobiledevice and ifuse and a few other libraries some geeks wrote and who I am indebted to this day

ruizu x02. I gotta admit when i first saw it and the price I though it'd be a piece of shit. But after I got it and tried it, I was wrong. Works/sounds great. Can drive a pair of sony headphones without fail and has great format support so no bothersome trans coding involved. Another bonus is no having to use fucking software (WMP/etc) to load/manage music, just drag the files you want to the respective folder and off you go. Plus for the price, if i accidentally break it or it get's stolen I ain't out that much money.

I doubt that smartphones have caught up with PMPs for battery life over the past few years and I know they haven't started adding physical buttons again. I'm wondering because my Sansa E200 hasn't been doing well lately after a bit over a decade of service.

I'm looking for something to upgrade my Fiio X1 that is relatively small, has good battery and has (at least partial) tactile controls. I'm thinking that the Cowon Plenue D is looking good, anyone here had hands-on with it?

I disagree. Not because a PMP has that much to offer in terms of DACs anymore - but because of size. For exercise or a walk in the woods and things like that it's just much better with something the size of a pack of matches or a lighter than a 5-6" smartphone.

Look closely at the plug in picture related. See how that's a simple strait plug with not much of any protection on it? Notice that? Look closer if you don't.

Those plugs break and they break pretty quickly too. And the cables on those are flimsy too so if the plug doesn't break and cause you to get audio in one ear or no audio then the cable will make music come and go as you move.

And a cable that doesn't have that much thickness to it but it's a lot better than what the newer ones have. I'd recommend it.
The physical keys are very nice, it's size is compact, yet it has a relatively large display which displays album art nicely.

It supports tons of file formats, loads flac files that are 100mb+ in size without any lag and most important for me: it lets you browse by folder structure!

Also I love the design. The Display is kinda susceptible to scratches though.

Only real downside (exclusively to the European Union I believe, because of our fucked bureaucracy): sometimes, if you play it at a very high volume, like in your car or on your stereo, it warns you that you might damage your hearing and turns down the volume automatically. That's due to laws and regulations over here that Sony complies with.

I'll try updating it (Rockbox), but honestly, the battery got so bad after ~9 months. I think it might just be that the battery is dying. It'll drop immediately to 75% after a full charge without doing a single thing. The battery will then last between 1-2 hours.
