Personal/portable music player thread (/pmp/)

Some anons asked me to post about a recently finished guide for converting an ipod video 5G/5.5G to a rockboxed player with an msata SSD and a 3000 mAh battery. I did not get to reply before the last thread fell off the edge of the earth >>60749467

Here's the guide, http://nullvoid.station.moe/Freedom-Hardware/Video5G-Rockbox/

What else is in the news for /pmp/?

-Rockbox 3.14 release
battery life for Sansa clip claims to be doubled
After the update I have been having battery drain issues. Not sure if anyone else has been having them or if my hardware is starting to fail

Why use a pmp?
dedicated devices are subjectively more comfortable when:

-you want a dedicated player with a large storage capacity
-you want a small player for physical activities
-you want a dedicated player in situations where you don't want your phone tied to any cords

PMP usage will increase your phone's battery life, both in terms of a single charge and the overall life of the battery.

>dedicated devices are subjectively more comfortable when:

>-you want a dedicated player with a large storage capacity
>-you want a small player for physical activities
>-you want a dedicated player in situations where you don't want your phone tied to any cords

Additionally:

-situations where you want to interface with a dedicated player without removal from pocket *(sansa clip + for example is very easy to use as an excercise player because of it's small profile and dedicated function buttons

I still have my Zune HD 16gb, but it doesn't really see use (Fiio X1 w/64 sdxc takes care of bidness). Zune was my favorite layout/formfactor of all time, though. If only it didn't rely on that fucking software and MS hadn't killed it...actually, does anyone know if the Zune designers/engineers went to another company? Is there a legacy for the lil' not-iPod that almost could?
>>
>>60800601
Sandisk still makes several variants of it, there's the Clip Jam which is basically a cheaper and shittier Sansa Clip meant for kids, the Clip Sport which is basically the same PMP they've been selling for years, and the Clip Sport Plus which is water resistant and adds Bluetooth, but removes expansible storage. You can still find them at Best Buy hidden away in the Third Party iPod accessories section.

I have two Clip Sport Pluses and they're quite good despite the lack of SD card support, BT is high quality and the interface is nice and easy, battery life is like 22 hours without BT and 6 hours with BT, just a shame there's no Rockbox for the new ones.

that's honestly on the cheap side for a nice PMP. there are quite a few over $1000. so yes, for "audiophile features" it really is more expensive than just using a phone. cheap chink PMPs have gotten pretty good though.
>>
>>60802563
I revived my own psp-3k and was considering having it double as a pmp, but it's still a bit too hefty for that purpose.
I like the idea of a pmp, but hard to justify. Always nice to have my phone when I go out in case SHTF and even at the gym I can look up form and whatever else. Guess UNIX philosophy loses out to practicality here.

Does rockbox manage play counts? That's incredibly important to my playlists.

but why?
>>
>>60801228
you can install rockbox on it, so yeah.
>>
>>60802558
That's really not that bad. Mine was 99 "used" in mint condition.
Believe me I think that given the near always clunky interfaces, not usually amazing battery life, and lack of certain common features, most of today's PMPs are fucking overpriced shit. If A&K players were made during the iPod wars they'd have tried for more competitive pricing.
Unfortunately the "audiophile" community will buy 2000 dollar players and 3000 dollar headphones and 250-1000 dollar DAC/amplifiers and say "wow that's cheap!" like Patrick Bateman at the Dorcia....
>>
>>60798569
fiio, xduuo.

Don''t listen to phone plebs.

In fact companies are still making pmp for the high end audiophile market, so they tend to be quite expensive but there's new stuff being made.

It's become more a niche market.

Top tier iPhone holds 256GB. As for Android, there are at least a few models with 128GB options, I don't know about 256GB, I haven't paid attention to the phone market in years, but many of course have microSD card slots, which means that they support a max of 384GB currently, and since they support SDXC they'll be upgradeable to up >2TB as time goes on.

Here is a list in order of use since about 2008. Hopefully it'll give you an idea of what to get next.

- Walkman S639F (2008)
- iPod Classic 160GB (just generally shit) (2010)
- Walkman S639F (2010)
- Samsung Galaxy S3 (2012) (did not enjoy using a phone)
- Walkman S639F (2012)
- Sansa Clip+ (battery died within a year) (2014)
- Fiio X1 (2014) (did not sound very good, awful UI and would freeze up a lot)
- Walkman S639F (2014)
- Fiio X5 (2015) (too bulky to be considered portable, sounded great though)
- Walkman S639F (2015)
- Walkman NWZ-A15 (current)

I tried moving away from the S639F in 2010 because I needed more storage, but I always ended up going back to it. After 9 years (and pretty much daily use) the battery is starting to lose a bit of charge, but it still holds over 25 hours easy. In the end, I just decided to get another Sony device with expandable storage, and so far so good.

tl;dr buy Sony

No it doesn’t, rockbox is a fucking messy piece of shit that corrupts itself when the database is bigger that 250gb. When it does you have to re-index the whole library taking an awesome and totally fun amount of 1+2 hours depending on your SSD!
The bug has been present and reported for ages, but what were you expecting? Has been years without any kind of rockbox update, hell even the themes library has been frozen for years.

Want to hear music? Would be a shame if you have to wait 2 hours because fuck you! That’s why!

Stock firmware with 256GB? Ha. NO SUPPORT.
Apple doesn’t have a reason to fix a resources leak when the iPod was never intended to reach that capacity. If the iPod doesn’t kill the partitions randomly you are stuck with an exquisite 5fps scrolling experience.

It's very good, has a few gimmicks like NFC and Bluetooth but they are easily turned off. It sounds fantastic. It's easily one of the better Walkmans as of late.
I was torn between getting the A-15 and A-35 (the newer touch screen model). I landed on the A-15 since it seems the A-35 has a lot of features removed and saved for their more 'premium' Z series range.

I know that the Zune software still works, but I prefer being able to just Drag+Drop, and not having to fuck with a media library updating just to put new music on a player. It's the same reason that I never cared for iTunes or Sony's SonicStage. The integration with the Xbox 360 was great, though. I'd come home from work, plug it in to charge and just stream my music straight from the Zune with no issues. I had occasional problems with the Media Center functionality, but never with the Zune.

Didn't see another audio thread (maybe I'm blind), so I figured I'd ask here.

I'm looking for a nice, compact, all-in-one home player. I don't really care about 8-track, records, or anything like that (though it is a bonus), but I do need it to be able to play radio, cassettes, and bluetooth. CDs are a plus, but not required.

Had one of these for the last 3 or 4 years. It's pretty good all around, I'm not an audiophile though. The one issue is the wheel, it's never been great but for a long time now it's basically been un-usable; it skips all over the place and sometimes doesn't react at all. I use the buttons for playing and sorting through music but you're forced to use the wheel in the settings menus and this can be a huge ballache, not that I have any need to adjust those often. I've never had a smartphone so I've always had ipods (back in the 00s) and then a Clip Zip.

What to replace this with? I sort my music by artists only, I don't use playlists or anything and I just want something that can take an SD card, play every common type of file and sound good.

>>60819788
I hate not having everything archived and then backed up externally. With streaming I can't shake the feeling that it could all be here today gone tomorrow, not to mention it required an internet connection. I still collect CDs, I have hundreds.

Dedicated music player /dmp/ tells more about the thing your talking about

Personal music player might as well be what ever a person uses ie. a phone.

I have one of these dirt-cheap $2 very small players so I'll share to give you girls an idea of what they are like.

The audio quality is actually just fine. It really is just fine with any headphones you'd wear outside, perhaps you could hear some difference with expensive headphones these can't power anyway.

The two major downsides with these players are:

1) They will only read .mp3 files. They just won't read anything else. I like to use flac and m4v aac and opus and mp3 (if I got it lossy I keep it in that lossy format). I need to make a "special" SD cards with everything in MP3 for this little player. Navigating is also kind of hard so I use dirt-cheap 4GB SD cards (just because it's easier to swap SD cards than navigate around).

2) Battery life is effectively around two hours. This really isn't enough for a lot of things. This is a real problem with this player. You can charge it, walk to the gym, work out and walk home and it'll probably die before you get home. It's totally perfect for everything that requires a very small and very light player for something like an hour. I can use my phone or something bigger walking to and from the gym and have more than enough battery life in this thing while at the gym.. but it really is limited to that kind of usage.

I guess you could drag a powerbank around but then you might as well just drag a bigger player along.

I almost bought the Zishan Z1 the other day.

> doesn't have display but that's OK
> doubles as a USB sound card / DAC/AMP
> plays all the important sound formats except AAC, which is sadly missing
> claims to have 10-20 hours of battery life, which is enough even if this really means 8

Then I noticed that the front actually says

poo in the loo

like it's a pajeet joke player. I don't want that.

I'm kinda confused by that guide. That battery doesn't look like it will fit in the ipod. Are the aftermarket ones of the stock size in larger capacities? I couldn't find any above 850mAh.

Yes, Sandisk still makes very good MP3 players with a clip. Try the Clip Sport Plus, it's about $50, comes with 16 gb of storage, is splashproof and has BT.

Ok got a bit of a problem with mine, I got it talking with linux but every time I sync something with it the songs I just put there show up as unknown artist. I'm trying to figure out how it syncs the artist. I pulled some old music I had put on there with the zune software years ago and it seems to have some strange data embeded in it. But I have no idea how to even read this data fully.

Anyone have any idea what to do? there is like zero info on this around.

Is there a generally decided upon all around best portable device? I've still got my stock 5th gen iPod. Rarely need portable music, but I'm interested to know what all the options are. Is there a chart for this?

My Clip+ battery is degrading. I just upgraded to 3.14 and by the looks of it that should help, but it's going to die one day and I don't know what the fuck to replace it with. I'm almost considering just forking over $100 for another one.

Have any Clip+ fans moved on and found something that filled the void?
