Well that really depends on which programs you're going to run. Just test it without ramdisk and add 4GB plank on top of that. Also why do you want to do that? It's not a good solution for a persistent system (i.e. non live-usb). If you want speed just buy a small ssd for your root.

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.
>>
>>60807499
Those are meme shells.
>>
>>60807499
Since bash is available everywhere, it's just convenient to write bash scripts (or even POSIX sh scripts) so your little programs work on all machines youre working on.

zsh is a good shell, but imho writing zsh scripts make only sense if you write them for yourself (.rc functions, etc).
>>
>>60807499
Your either make shell agnostic scripts usually referred to as "portable" (a VERY good habit) or bash script if for some reason you can't achieve the result you need.
Other interactive shells like zsh are bash-compatible. Without being bash compatibility noone would ever consider using them.
>>
>>60807572
>>60807603
Many thanks, I was wondering.
>>
>>60807603
actually zsh isn't bash compatible
it can emulate ksh, which comes close to bash
>>
>>60807614
anyway, theres nothing stopping you from using zsh as interactive shell and scripting with bash
>>
>>60807572
>is available everywhere,
Is this really a "valid" reason? That's like saying "use Windows, it's the standard". Why not giving shells like zsh a chance to become standard?
>>
>>60807657
muh GNU

Also, bash isn't compareable with malware like Windows, furthermore, there's nothing stopping zsh to take bash's place (at some corners it already did).
>>
>>60807507
Hello there ! I have used the term "open source" because some people creates open source software without using a free software licence. Since those people have made important stuff and have contributed the history of Computer Science

>I downloaded an LTS version of Ubuntu, but don't want to have outdated software. Is there a way to turn LTS Ubuntu into normal Ubuntu? I don't want to reinstall everything, because I just finished setting everything up (installing the programs I need and logging into accounts, networks, etc.).
I found out why the update didn't work.

When you have the LTS version, you have to go to the update center and change checking for updates from only checking for LTS releases to checking for any release.

Thank you for posting the upgrade command. A normal version is installing right now.
>>
>>60807719
Greetings, friend! It seems that you are unfamiliar with the text I posted previously, and that you seem to be confused by what I was trying to express with it. Allow me to clarify:
The Open Source Movement split off from the Free Software Movement and, in rejecting Software Freedoms 0, 2 and 3, pretend that software freedom is a technological issue rather than an ethical one. This is simply untrue and directly hurts the cause of the Free Software Movement. As the Free Software Movement strives to better society and its use of software, the Open Source Movement is in opposition to freedom and therefore subjugates its users just as any other proprietary software does -- except unlike the publishers of fully nonfree, closed-source software, it pretends to be fighting for the good of the people and their freedom. The Open Source Movement is a hypocritical, malicious and misleading organization worse than the likes of Microsoft or Apple and should be shunned at every opportunity. Therefore, it is imperative that we do not use the term "open source" and instead call it what it is: proprietary, nonfree, user-subjugating malware!

zsh is nice, oh-my-zsh is for (mac)fags

zsh got a pretty bad reputation because it's mostly used by macfags (macOS ships a very outdated version of GPLv2 bash) and for some reason people install zsh instead and blog about how great it is compared to bash (it actually really has some nice features, but most stuff can be done with bash too), then GNU/Linux users find these blogs and blindly install it because its what the cool guys use without even knowing anything beyond ls and cat, which makes zsh users just look as bad as arch users.

tl;dr zsh = Arch, the shell, it's good enough when you actually know what you are doing

Bloat.

The system itself is tiny and you only get about a dozen programs installed. You get a file explorer, browser, and a couple other basic tools, you download everything else you need.
You also don't get any compilers and stuff like that.

>>60808567
It's actually really good. It really doesn't use a lot of resources and it's optimized pretty well. My chinkpad usually gets about an hour of battery on linux but with Solus I had about 30-40 minutes more.

Also the shutdown time on Solus is insane. It powers off in under a second after you press 'shutdown'.
>>
>>60808535
it depends how the packages are made. for example - in arch, 1 package contains the libraries, executables, dev headers and some other things within it, but ubuntu splits them up, so libs come in 1 package, the binary comes in another, dev headers in another etc, so ubuntu looks like it has more software than arch but it's the same.

Hey!

I have a AMD 970 chipset mobo (Gigabyte GA-970-UD3P) and I've been having some issues with GNU/Linux recently.

No matter which kernel version I run, the system will freeze. I've tried numerous "fixes" but none helped, my PC keeps crashing under Linux after 10-15 minutes of use, but sometimes it's less and sometimes it's more (last time I managed to get an uptime of 1h 5min before the system crashed). With crash, I mean the whole system locks up and doesn't respond for anything and I need to reboot it. I can't seem to find any logs or whatsoever after it either. I use i3 and Arch.

When I'm on Vindoze, none of this happens. Anyone with similar experience?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Just use fs2fs for root, try to find any squashfs compatible utils... i.e configs hosted on the f2fs dirs, base root packages on a squashfs, extra utils on another f2fs partition. ai've never done it before, but you've given me the inspiration to try. Might end up fabricating my own distro for that purpose, SD friendly sys as optimized as possible. Thanks anon

I don't really know where I would begin to troubleshoot this or what on my system I should look into. I feel that it has something to do with weird authentication issues, but I've already logged in to hte network in the past Any suggestions on where to start?

Guys I'm desperate.

I'm trying to work on an init script for my company. Here's it's structure:
- Init script launches daemon start script
- daemon start script sets up the shell as the daemon's user
- daemon start script and creates a log file
- daemon start script runs 'exec starter >>& $log &' where starter is a binary that links to a few libraries then launches the actual daemon's executable.

I know it gets to the point where it creates the log file, right before launching the starter, but that's all I know. There is nothing in the log whatsoever. I know the log is created because it's empty and its modified date matches my boot time. I know the process has write access to the log because I explicitly made its filemode 777. I know the script, in theory, is supposed to work, because if I do service servicename start, it actually fucking mother fucking works. But for some reason, it never fucking works on boot, and it doesn't write anything to the log when it fails, so I have no idea why.

Can someone help? Thanks.

Does you server have its nfs export configured with lock? If so, it won't allow for more than one client at a time. Try putting nolock as an option and see if that makes a difference. Or disable your server's firewall, see if that makes a difference.

Because he wants to make people aware of the orgin, history and purpose of the GNU system; freedom. Nowadays many people join the "Linux" community for the practical benefits, but nobody is teaching them about freedom, which is what the community is built on. In fact, the free software idealism is the engine that made the whole thing even possible - but when you look at our community today, very little people care about freedom; they buy terms like "open source", companies stuff money into the Linux foundation and Canonical and people get angry when $random_proprietary_program doesn't have a linux-port. It's going downhill. Saying "GNU/Linux", makes people aware of GNU, they may browse the website, make their minds, approve or disapprove.
I don't think that credit is what rms is about, even if it would be a legit request.
>>
>>60808191
pls respond
>>
>>60812207
True. I was annoyed at the whole GNU/Linux naming thing but the deeper I went into the whole story it made more sense.
The thing is, GNU did start the whole open source, free software thing. The GNU project is the core of the whole mentality that drove the free software to where it is now. If there was no GNU, Linux would still be there but would probably get used for another propertiary OS (kinda like what Android did).
I understand why he insists on calling it GNU/Linux even if most of the software on it isn't made by GNU, but GNU is not just programs, it's the mentality and philosophy that every other FOSS developer followed.

That being said, yeah, GNU/Linux is a shit name but it's the best there is if you want to give respect to the GNU project and its values.

I dare say more. Now, I haven't researched this and I'm basically pulling it out of my ass, but it is my impression that without the legal precedent of free software we wouldn't have the free culture movement either, or at least not in such a strong and mature state. Would we have wikipedia or creative commons without this folk-dancing autist?

>>60812429
I never understood the systemd thing.
Is it bad because it's so huge and everything is handled by one program so it's harder to replace individual modules if one of them fail or something like that?
>>
>>60812464
the problem with systemd isn't systemd itself, basically

the problem is that programs should work with ANY init system, but the wide acceptance of systemd (which is more a community problem) leads to development of programs that depend on systemd, so, if you want to ran program x, you NEED systemd
this pretty much kills the whole diversity and flexibility of gahnoo/lunix
furthermore, (thats just my very own opinion) it gives a single company too much power over the systems future (red hat already owns a lot of kernel development, audio, security, ...)
>>
>>60812513
lol nice thats impressive
how'd you do that
>>
>>60812526
>which is more a community problem
At some point systemd developers actually asks programmers to "fix" their programs by adding a systemd dependency (see tmux).

Oh so basically it's like on Android where everything depends on Google Apps services so you cannot use your phone without Gapps even if you have alternative 3rd party app stores.
Or like if you couldn't use GNOME apps on DEs other than GNOME.

You're right, that is a bit worrying.

I'm fairly new to linux and I've come across a problem while trying to dual boot windows on my old laptop. First I had Antergos running on it and I ran a live usb to split a partition into a new one using gparted, everything worked out. Then I installed windows into the new partition and it boots into windows just fine though I can't choose whether to boot linux or windows (guessing grub got overwritten) And lastly I tried to fix grub, I ran a live Antergos usb again hoping to fix it through the terminal but gparted lists the old linux partitions having a weird paper with an X icon. I can't even run pacman getting input output errors. Are the partitions corrupted? If so what should I do? I've tried googling for answers but all I come up with is a bunch of Ubuntu related problems that get fixed with their own live usb fixing tool.

Did I make a dumb mistake along the way?

When a file aleady exists, it will get clobbered (file.1 file.2, etc).

I would just like to interject for one moment. The operating system you are suggesting for me to install, and rather commandingly might I add, will in fact, not directly solve my current problem at hand, and will actually cause me to ask further questions about the difficult process involved in installing it. Gentoo is a very nice operating system itself, but I'd rather you directly assist me in my quest to solve my current predicament.

I understand that many computer users run the Gentoo Linux operating system, and I realize they may enjoy it greatly and are not currently experiencing the current problem that I have whilst using my non-Gentoo operating system. Through a peculiar turn of events, I have noticed an enormous amount of users make the "Install Gentoo" suggestion, but many of its users are not aware that this suggestion, in most cases, is actually not an "easy-fix" to every single computer-related error.

There really are reasons for installing Gentoo, and there are people using it, but it is just for the few users who choose to compile their own source code locally according to their chosen configuration. Gentoo is just another operating system: the problems I am experiencing will not undeviatingly be solved if I make the choice to install it. All these so-called "Install Gentoo" suggestions I am noticing should cease immediately.

Cool.

zsh has no decent completion. Just insane completion. It's a pain to use it. Each time I press tab I cry with zsh.

So make a third partition?

>>60814100
wget can't do that unless you use wget -O, which overwrites the file

just discovered sxiv

why is feh so popular when it can't even display gifs?
>>
>>60814330
because it's the only program that carelessly about the window managere, forcefully, rough, sets your wallpaper so it just works

I have Gentoo on my desktop. Can I install Windows 10 on an external hard drive without it fucking up my gentoo installation?

feh really needs gif support
I've been hating on feh for a long time since I couldn't find any use for it other than setting a wallpaper, but when you start scripting it, you know wha feh is really cool.
>>
>>60814358
No. Windows will fuck you, period. Don't use Windows.

You really should learn a bit LUA and start scripting mpv. I use it for music, videos, images. Gif, webm, right here.

>>
>>60814410
Only way you can do it without fucking up your grub or whatever is to disconnect your internal hard drives when you're installing Windows on the external drive and boot into windows from the BIOS instead of grub. Otherwise Windows will fuck everything up so you can only boot into Windows.
>>
>>60814542
Friendly thread.
>>
>>60814542
Wow. That is absolutely not fucking true.

You just have to boot from a live CD and reinstall Grub from there.

>>60814555
I'm having trouble following your logic. You say it's not true that Windows fucks up your grub then on the very next line imply that it does fuck up your grub and you state that it has to be reinstalled it from a live CD.
>>
>>60814600
I read his post too fast. I thought he was suggesting to always keep his Linux driver disconnected or something or Windows was going to find the first opportunity to erase Grub after installation.
>>
>>60814555
>>60814600
Yeah I'm generally trying to avoid this. Don't want to have to fix something that Windows broke.

No.
