8 cores isn't really a good thing, you're getting an Atom chip which is relatively slow per core, comparable to a dual core Haswell/Skylake/etc chip.

I'm trying to configure OpenVPN using a ClearOS (CentOS-based) firewall. Both clients are in VMware.

I have a question about networking. I've had my modem and same contract with Comcast for 6 months but about two weeks ago, my modem keeps dropping the Internet. It happens about 6 times a day now but the weird thing is my internet works just fine when I unplug the modem for a minute then plug it back in and wait 3 minutes. I don't see why my modem randomly stops providing Internet unless I reset it

So my question is if the problem with my internet dropping is due to the modem or Comcast and what should I do so troubleshoot or solve the problem. The modem in question is surfboard SB 6183

Use a traceroute tool to determine if the problem is your modem or upstream (i.e. your ISP.)

playing videos in a browser is and has always been a shit idea

if you want performance, quality, and a consistent interface, don't play videos in a browser
>>
>>60652792
yes, you are a liar
>>
>>60652789

It's still stuttering even in mpv with youtube-dl. Definitely way less than with the web interface but still stutters way too much to be watchable
wat do?
>>
>>60652794
If you can afford a manor, you can afford not worrying about what your oldest github projects look like. As long as it shows increasing skills and tackling more difficult tasks over time, it shouldn't become a drag on your reputation. That said, remember that anything you publish becomes impossible to retract.

Go through your downloads looking at what you have and thinking of very broad categories, i.e., program installs, ebooks, videos, or broads. Try to keep it under 10 categories. Move your files into directories named after the categories, then repeat the process for each directory. A few iterations of this will give you an organization. Best is not only in the eye of the beholder, but also the enemy of all that is good, so aim for good first.

Just moved into a new house, renting a room and the wifi is abysmal. I get signals from 11 different wifi networks because the homes are so close together, and because its a duplex I don't have access to the house that has the modem/router in it. What are my options besides throwing a wifi repeater in the kitchen and hoping it gets me above 20mbps?
>>
>>60654778
it's okay anon, I'll get the password soon enough.
>>
>>60654469
ok cool
>>
>>60654797
best bet would be to increase your router's tx-power but you mentioned that you are in a duplex that also has other wifi networks, and if you increase the tx-power too much it can interfere with other wifi network signals also not to mention you can overheat the power amplifier , and just in general create more problems than solve them
>>
>>60654797
i think you should just increase the router's tx=power incrementally by 1 and test how good the signal gets ,but beware you also can get into legal trouble if you increase it too much and cause problems for other people, soo.. yeah...
>>
>>60654866
>>60654851
I considered this, however I do not know the modems login info nor do I know if its a modem/router combo. Hopefully its still system default. I would ask the landlord for that info but he didn't even know the network name and password and he lives here so I doubt he even knows how to connect to the router to begin with.

how does autodimming work on smartphones?

any modern android has an "automatically adjust brightness" option which causes it to adjust the brightness when you turn off the light, or turn on a light.

what is it using to know to do that? is it using the camera somehow to detect light? or is there some other mechanic im missing?

ive tried googling it and i cant find anything, but im bad at googling

My best guess is the front facing camera is detecting room brightness. Same logic behind the phone screen shutting off when it is dark in the middle of the call because it assumes its against your face to prevent pushing the virtual buttons.

>>
>>60654934
There is a light sensor somewhere in the top part of your phone. You can see it if you shine a bright light at your phone, it usually shows as purple circle. Or just block different sections with your finger untill you find the one that causes it to dim.

Keeping the camera on 24/7 and constantly analyzing the picture feed it gives would drain your battery very quickly.

do you realize how silly that sounds? what do you think a camera does beides detecting light?

a camera is overkill for ambient light level detection though, for that a simpler device is used, most likely just a photoresistor

Didn't get any good answers yesterday, trying again.

In the last month I've had both my browsers (Chrome and Firefox) on both my desktops (home and office) start freezing randomly.
It is probably related to a Windows 10 or browser update or something? My browsing pattern and load hasn't changed, but there was a major Windows update.
I have antivirus, thats not the issue. The computers are powerful enough in terms of RAM, thats not it either. Restarting the application doesn't seem to influence it, its probably not a memory leak.
I am not using cheap RAM. I am not overclocking. My system isn't running hot.

Just short 1-3 second freezes at random moments, I think mostly (or exclusively?) while using the browser. Its not when downloading something, even when I change focus from this textbox to the captcha textbox I am at risk of this short freeze.
Anyone else have these since the last month? What could they be?

>Maximum Frequency in Resource Monitor is the same as the Processor Performance\% of Maximum Frequency counter in Performance Monitor.
>For example if you have a 2.5 ghz processor which is running at 800 mhz then % of Maximum Frequency = 800/2500 = 31%. So the processor is running at 31%, or 800 mhz, of the processor's maximum frequency of 2500 mhz (2.5 ghz).
>The "best" percentage of maximum frequency is subjective. Basically, you want the CPU running at a frequency that is fast enough to do what you want while using the least amount of power so it doesn't drain your battery or increase your electric bill unnecessarily. Your power plan in Windows is part of what determines the frequency as well as settings in the computer's BIOS.

t. Microsoft

So thats the blue line, which when I get a freeze is at its max. It shouldn't be a problem, since thats just how fast the CPU works, not its actual workload. The workload (green line) stays low.

Also I just remembered that Flash exists. Its Flash, isn't it? Its fucking Flash. I always have something playing on Youtube, and its fucking Flash ruining me.

It doesn't look like your cpu is at fault here.

Look at your disk and memory graphs there. It would seem something is causing your system to sporadically thrash the fuck out of the swap file, which would lead to temporary freezing. Try turning off your swap file and see if it stops happening.

this is how people get viruses, anon
if you're missing a library, find out the *proper* way to get it, and place it alongside the game's executable, NOT the windows folder

the modified time is likely from being extracted from an archive which preserved the original creation date

i would delete the file, and run "sfc /scannow"

Hi there

My computer died completely (power spike due to lightning strike)
My cousin has handed me over his other computer which he doesn't use anywhere because it's a breeding place for virusses as he says.
(It has all kinds of malware, keyloggers and fuck knows what else on it)

Now, I appreciate the favor he did me by handing me over this computer (it's pretty decent, GTX660 and FX8320, 8GB of ram) but I would like to know how I will go about getting this to be a safe and good functioning machine again, as if it were fresh from the factory.

I read about flashing and updating the bios which would take care of potential threats that moved to the bios, a fresh install of Windows (he used a pirated and activated with some shady crack, version of W7. I will use my bought legit Windows 10 version on this machine)

How would I go best to cleanse this machine?
I will be buying an SSD with spare money I have left over to replace the 2 HDD's, but I'm not sure whether or not I should replace any other parts like Motherboard and when not, when do I flash / update the bios?
This is the only PC I have, it would be pretty useless doing it right now with all the virusses on right? Perhaps better when I installed Windows 10? Or would that infect the Windows 10 right away so that I have to install W10, then update / flash bios, and then reinstall W10?

Help would be much appreciated, looking forward to replies.

I'm moving over from a pirated W7 which is badly activated to a legit W10 copy, not sure if this will have any negative effect if I don't flash BIOS

What IEMs/earbuds should I buy for under $50 USD? I was using apple earbuds and they were absolutely fine. 90% of IEMs I've used were uncomfortable as fuck because of the shitty rubber they use. I would just buy another apple pair (entirely serious) but I don't think they sell them for normal headphone jacks anymore. What's an equivalent that's cheap and comfortable (preferably entirely plastic and no rubber) with decent sound quality? I couldn't really give a fuck about audiphile sound quality, just don't want something absolutely garbage.
>>
>>60658597
I'm certain the BIOS is fine, relax dude. You should try updating it anyhow because it sounds like the previous owner was even dumber than you and probably never bothered.
>>
>>60658659
Check with /csg/. KZ-ATE, Rock Zircons and Xiaomi Pistons are good IEMs for cheap. Most memed earbuds are VE Monks which have great value for the hilariously low price of under 7 dollars.
>>
>>60658589
That makes sense but doesn't sound as dramatic as I feared. Thank you very much.
>>
>>60658668
He has not, that's pretty much the only thing I'm 100% sure about with this machine.
Would you suggest updating it right now or when I have the new Windows installed?
>>
>>60658724
Do it outside of windows, through the bios/uefi if it supports usb flashing, just download the update on a system you know is clean and do it like that.
>>
>>60658756
Very smart, thanks a lot.

p.s. can this be done when I have no HDDs / SSDs in my system?
Just curious
>>

Yes, of course.

>>60658698
Depend on the application really, VM would take longer to start, But I doubt 5 sec delay would really matter.

In the recent NSA VAULT-7 leaks there was "hack" where they replaced a windows dll with a NSA-made botnet-enabled dll. Since N++ uses that dll too, it made it vulnerable. N++ now checks if that dll is signed by the original author and refuses to operate if it's an unsigned dll, made by possible the NSA.

I'm on PC Part Picker, and I click a link to go to the product page for a motherboard on newegg, and the redirect link doesn't work. Same with all the other links.
What's going wrong and how do I fix it?
>>
>>60659620
Try getting rid of the first part that comes before the newegg url and see what happens.

How can I stay anonymous on a flash chatroom? One I frequent is constantly getting bombarded with script kiddies and people that are swatting others.

I tried Opera's VPN but it doesn't mask me at all.

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC case. It should be pretty easy to switch it out, right? As long as I get the right size for my motherboard?

>>60660170
Make sure it's the right size and you're good to go. When you're finally done, make sure you properly connect the front I/O to the motherboard. If you fuck up, you might think your entire build is fried.
>>
>>60660181
Okay, yes, that works, but I don't wanna do that every time I click a link. Why is it not just taking me to the link, and how can I fix it so it does?
>>
>>60660224
>>60660170
Also, make sure it's compatible with your CPU unit. If you get an ATI CPU Unit compatible Case tray it might short circuit the VRAMS on your INTEL APU Chipset.

Those are Hex numbers for ascii characters. Lookup the ascii table and replace the %2f or whatever for the appropriate characters.

%2f = /
%3a = :
%3d = =
%3f = ?
>>
>>60660227
That's on their end. Must be a bug in their conversion from storing the hex values to the actual ascii characters. Those symbols are usually stored in HEX to prevent SQL exploits.

I want to install GNU/Linux(tm) onto a USB stick to use for normie systems that i have to work on sometimes

is there one that can be recommended?
preferably 64/128 GB and one of those small form factor ones

why i ask you ask? i don´t trust reviews and i wanted to ask here if there are any that are not going to die after a month or two of heavy usage

heavy being 2-3 hours per day normal os usage 5 days a week
>>
>>60660458
get wendell odom's CCNA book. It's really good for beginners, even if it's cisco-specific

other than that, get Kurose Networking book for vendor neutral view

also, Tanenbaum if you want to blow your head off

That depends. If they are ISDN phones you need a net termination (pretty much like a router in that it provides access to the outside world as well as a node for local devices to communicate over) and that's it. It doesn't necessarily have to be able to dial outside*.
Analogue phones, possibly, although you might need to emulate the switching station somehow.
IP phones, no problem whatsoever, they communicate via your home router.

* statement might be wrong
>>
>>60661095
Are any of these expensive?
>>
Are powerlines worth it?
>>
>>60660557
yes

you could for example;
1. create a "vpn" network namespace
2. create routing rules such that all traffic in the "vpn" network namespace goes through your vpn
3. override flash player with a script that runs flash player under the "vpn" network namespace
>>
>>60661147
ISDN NT: Around 5 € where I live, because ISDN is being phased out.
Analog switching center: No idea, can be as simple as a few wires and relays.
Router: You're probably using one right now, go get some DECT phones.
