Looking for a worthwhile DSL Modem Router to replace an ASUS RT-N66U router (hooked up to a shit-ass TalkTalk DSL modem router)
After years of use, the N66U is failing me, it was a good run though.

Want it to be equal or better performance with strong signal, would like advice on custom router firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato vs stock router firmware.

If you care, original posts about it in an internet speed thread:

WTH are Vcore, VCCIO, System Agent, and Vdimm, and how does each affect overclocking?
>>
>>60641562
Windows blocks non essential updates, although there are workarounds. No driver support for integrated graphics. Likely no driver support for some of the other hardware of your laptop too such as touchpad.

>>60641564
Vcore = the voltage the CPU core runs at, higher = generally more stable overclock. VCCIO = the voltage for the input/output section of the CPU, doesn't do much. System Agent voltage = the memory controller, higher generally gives better stability for memory overclock. Vdimm = voltage sent to the RAM, again more is generally more stable.

My cousin is quite paranoid when it comes to.. Well pretty much everything.

He is quite tech-illiterate too and managed to completely fuck up his computer.
He pirated Windows 7, then managed to get some dodgey activator, used that for a few months and got the PC full with virusses.
Now he bought a fucking Apple computer (''because they can't get virusses''), typical normie.
This happened a couple of years ago.

He wanted to throw the computer away, I told him not to and he handed it over to me.

It's a system with an FX8320 (if I'm not mistaken), a GTX660, 8GB of RAM and 2x 1TB HDD.

Problem is, the entire system is a mess.
But it's better than my current one, so I decided to give it a try.

Is it possible to get this back to ''new'' as in, completely nuke the entire thing to remove any left overs from his old install(s) or is it better to just sell this thing and buy completely new parts with it just to be sure because it's beyond repair?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>60642213
Literally just format the hard drive. If hes paranoid tell him Apple and microsoft work with the nsa to ensure their systems have government backdoors, and that hes only safe if he uses gnu/linux on a non back doored cpu (like his fx8320)

>>
>>60642280
bios attacks arent a real thing for consumers and are incredibly difficult to do. you dont have a backdoored bios. The best way to do it is during install, it literally lets you delete the old partitions and install it as a fresh install. Still i think using 10 is such a terrible idea that i have to advise against it.

I have an SSD for my root filesystem. All my media is stored on a 1TB HDD which I mount automatically in ~/Storage. 2 folders on the HDD are bound to ~/Videos and ~/Music, my fstab looks like this:

~/Storage/Videos ~/Videos none bind

~/Storage/Music ~/Music none bind

Now, when I delete files from either of those folders, it doesn't actually delete the files, it stores them in .Trash-1000 instead, but I can not empty my trash, it doesn't fill, I have to manually delete the folder. If however I go to the same folder but through the ~/Storage path, deletion works as expected. What am I doing wrong here? Should I mount Storage outside of my home folder instead? I do want Videos and Music bound to the Storage disk.

In the last month I've had both my browsers (Chrome and Firefox) on both my desktops (home and office) start freezing randomly.
It is probably related to a Windows 10 or browser update or something? My browsing pattern and load hasn't changed, but there was a major Windows update.
I have antivirus, thats not the issue. The computers are powerful enough in terms of RAM, thats not it either. Restarting the application doesn't seem to influence it, its probably not a memory leak.

Just short 1-3 second freezes at random moments, like when I tried to correct a mistake in this post by clicking in a previous paragraph.
Anyone else have these since the last month? What could they be?

If I want to generate a random number between min and max but want to exclude certain results what is the best way to go about it?

I've seen something like this online:
randint_exclude(min, max, exclude){
if((ret = randint(min, max)) == exclude)
ret = randint_exclude(min, max, exclude);
return ret;
}

But theoretically that could take forever, yes? Not that it will in practice, but that just seems like bad design. Also I'm thinking there could be side effects to having many layers of recursion depending on language. I guess one way to go could be to specify several ranges that start and end before the excluded number and then randomize which range to use but that could be impractical if I want to exclude several numbers. Is there any other way?

What you really need is either:
-use the 2.0 or 2.1 audio track if available
-better 5.1->2.0 downmixing
-digital audio output that is connected to a 5.1 sound system with digital input
-audio device with 5.1 analog multi-channel output you can connect to any 5.1 sound system.

I think Kodi has an option in audio that says something like amplification that can help. Your problem is probably not downmixing to stereo properly and its throwing your center channel away

I don't want just to build my own, but I have a line of products in mind that still doesn't exist in the market yet. I have to figure out if it's feasible both in terms of shape, dimensions, and costs, but before all of this I have to lay down a first 3D CAD draft, which is easy if I manage to get all the information I need.

So I just upgraded my home server to an Ryzen 7 1700 and it's working great.

Thing is though I had to use an old Geforce 7300 LE housefire for VGA since ryzen has no integrated solution, is there some dirt cheap option I could buy to replace this thing? It runs at 55 Celsius constantly and it's old as fuck, I just really don't like it.

I just need something that will put a picture on a screen occasionally, no games at all, no video at all, the server is headless 99% of the time and it's running Ubuntu desktop when it does display something.

I'm think sub 10$ would be great, anyone know of anything?

I have a cheap stereo receiver I want to run through a Pioneer SG-750 to have the spectrum analyzer light up. That's really all I care about.
>(not an audiophile)

The receiver has no RCA outs. Can I run a speaker wire-to-RCA adapter to connect it to the graphic EQ and then out to speakers?

>Sub-Question:
Can I use the headphone jack on the receiver to run a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable to a graphic equalizer?
>>

the 710. see if you can get a second hand one cheap. if not the 1030 is also an option. 1030 can power two 4k monitors, 710 can do dual 1080p.

$10 is dreaming
>>
>>60645266
I figured as much, people are trying to sell used GPU's for like 4 dollars less than new, I wish I could strangle these morons but alas.

I may just have to deal with the housefire until I can get a good deal on something. I already bummed this GPU out of an old toaster so at least it was free.

I just want something that doesn't heat up the case more than the CPU and use a shitload of power. I'm gonna be overclocking and it may cause problems later.
>>
Sorry if this isnt the place for this

In excel is there a way to make a relationship between tables to send data from a master table to either of 3 different tables depending on how I flag it?

Lets say that I have a master itemized list and have a business which sells my items for 25/50% commission depending on the item and want to be able to flag an item sold to be sent to the 25/50% table depending on how its sold.

Im trying to keep everything straight for tax and recording purposes and am trying to automate the process as much as possible

My job is a controls engineer. I literally am in charge of making million dollar machines operate correctly. In my field the only people that write viruses for this equipment is the NSA.

Now my IT department is overly competent. Every time I get this 3k machine they bought me operating correctly the sysadmin goes and changes something like disabling ICS so my VMs can't get internet. This machine does some unknown scripts at startup where the login time goes from a normal 10 seconds to 6-7 minutes.

I'm going in for a review soon and I want to tell my boss I want my own separate laptop from the company laptop. So 1 laptop for connecting to work server and 1 laptop for doing field work because I frequently find myself getting yelled at by the customer for this piece of shit machine.

So am I going to find myself laughed at by my boss? Everything else about this company is perfect but the tools they give us are retarded in every way.

More stupid questions: Since I'd be expected to buy the hardware and software can I get by with 2 windows 7 pro licenses? 1 for the host and 1 for my VMs? I'm only ever going to run 1 VM at a time even though I could see myself doing some network simulations.

>>60645359
explain the situation to the boss. he will understand if customer care is your main priority then you need the tools to do the job.

additionally, I would think about copping windows 10 instead, it has better perfomance with VMs, plus you have the ability to use hyper-v; which is pretty great. you can find cheap licenses on /r/microsoftsoftwareswap

Thanks, I'll consider making this about customer care and continued revenue from them. >It better not be a Seagate drive.
For Christ sake, do you even know anything about the retarded memes you are spouting?

Not every seagate drive is destined to brick you faggot, western digital isn't putting magical fairy dust into their drives to make the last longer, they just charge retards more to get a "high performance" aka a normal hard drive and people eat it up because "lol seagate always fail doe, it costs more so it's better". Seagate had a run of bad drives back around 2012 and it was mostly limited to their 3TB drives, it was caused by a flood and they refused to scrap the stock so they sold it instead, if you think western digital is so noble that they would not have done the same then you are a retarded fanboy, all component manufacturers are greedy shits who don't care about you or your data. If they had it their way your shit would break every 3 months so you'd constantly have to buy new parts from them.

I've had Seagates for the past 20 years and every one of them still works. To top it off I have 2 dead Western Digital Greens and a dead Hitachi Deskstar sitting on my desk right now.

Backups, always have multiple redundant backups if you care about your data. Consolidating all your important and irreplaceable data in a single 16GB drive is beyond stupid.

I have a 500GB iomega Prestige USB drive I used for backups. Filled the drive with data and stashed it away some years ago, last week I tried to retrieve data and the drive is completely fucked. Less than 40 hours of use. Literally the 3 or 4 days I used to write the data on it. The rest of usage counted is the time it took to read the half-broken data back.
SMART was fine at the beginning, then it began ringing all the broken sectors.

If you do something stupid as this, use PAR files to have at least enough redundancy to recover your files in case of spotty media failure. That's also extremely useful when backing up to external magnetic or optical media.

I personally use Samsung, Hitachi and Toshiba, thank you very much.

>>60645841

>>
>>60645866
They were purchased but I think they are still using the name for now, I have never liked toshibas, too slow, so I can see why they thought that made sense.

I am also not a fan of WD because I remember the WD greens which all the WD fags seem to like to forget, there is a reason they do not exist anymore, they fucking failed like it wasn't even funny and idiots kept using them in high performance machines. WD is trying to shove old those trash models into their Blue line so people will still buy them. Go look at WD blues, the slow as fuck ones are the old greens, the 7200 are actual blues.

>>60645886
I never said putting that much data on one drive was a good thing, but there mere fact of a drive being made by any manufacturer does not make it worse. They are all just as likely to fail at that level of drive complexity.

I put Mageia Linux on a 32GB USB drive so I could install it on my laptop. Now I've fucked things up through le free software experimentation, and I can't reinstall Mageia because my >zip disquette thinks it only had 4MB of space on it. Why is this?

Some possibilities:
>The filesystem is FAT for some reason
>I made it bootable and that presumably removed all the remaining free space for some reason
>In Disk Management (in Windows), a lot of the USB drive is unallocated, but I can't change this or at least I don't know how if I can
>The USB has also been split into several different drive letters for some reason

the newspaper doesn't present itself as a forum

if you flop between "it's a public forum" and "it's my personal expression" when it's convenient for you, then people are rightfully going to call you opportunistic and unprincipled

i don't have a problem with rules, but moderation by feeling is just the rule of power

>3. voting system is awful because it lets the community silence dissenting opinions

To compare this to how 4chan (or other imageboards) works, if you think someone's post is bad then you can't convey your opinion without responding with a comment of your own unlike reddit where you can just downvote and leave.

If your idea is accepted, people will take your side. If your idea is shit, people will tell you that it's shit.

Reddit allows for people that have absolutely no idea what the conversation is about to join in by voting down or up and they can cause the discussion can quickly go to shit. Even if you're not speaking, voting is still part of the discussion. Heavily downvoted comments are automatically dismissed as "wrong" or "worthless" even if they're correct, even if they are read after being hidden.

The vast majority of people on reddit are of this type. The majority of votes on reddit threads are made by people who don't even click on the post but are anyways attracted to the title. This makes Reddit a good breeding ground for clickbait.

That aside I have one main complaint about Reddit and It's not about the site itself. Rather it's about the absolute lack of shits given by the admins about shills. It's incredibly easy to buy fake popularity and the admins don't give a damn.

Anyways, going to Reddit for information isn't a problem. The problem starts when you start engaging the community.

>1. they stole our memes and claimed they've made them
If you take pride in jokes, you are beyond help and should probably just kill yourself.
The world does not need you to entertain them.
There is no audience for your shitty performance, nobody reads your messages, nobody cares what you have to say.
When people spend time with you they think they are doing you a favor.
Memes are the lowest tier of humor and the only use for them is as a propaganda tool.
So who cares if reddit reposts your stale humor?

Huge difference when it comes to temperatures and overclocking potential.
Also mini versions are clocked at slower speeds.
Also mini versions usually use shitty heatsinks (See Zotac mini GTX series where they use a full aluminium heatsink) and the GPUs get really hot.

If you have no reason to get a mini GPU dont do it at all, the only reason is if you have a case where a long card doesnt fit.

OS and VM can't use the same GPU at the same time (unless also virtualising the GPU resources through RemoteFX or similar, which is kinda trash in terms of performance), they have to be separate. So you can have host running one physical GPU, VM running on a second.
