Yes but it still does miss a lot of great games. Many games are not available despite these being made with a cross-platform engine. The devs just don't care about gnu+linux.

Is there no choice but Unity if I want a decent HiDPI support? Literally every other DE is crap in that regard, MATE and XFCE only scale text and not UI elements, GNOME and Cinnamon can only be scaled by integer numbers (ie. 2, I need like 1.4-1.6).
KDE is somewhat decent in terms of scaling, but KDE is too buggy for me.

Here's a quick tutorial on how to make game devs care about GNU/Linux:

ยท Stop using Windows.
>>
>>60580933
A quick and dirty method:

1. go to /etc/grub.d
2. rename the os-proper script link so it will be above the linux one

examples:
before
10-header
20-debian-header
30-linux
40-os-proper

after
10-header
20-debian-header
25-os-prober
30-linux

>your description of quick and dirty worries me, but is it fine with no reprocussions?

Yes. I consider this dirty because 1. there is a grub-setdefault command which is however not convenient to use 2. updating grub/os-prober/base OS layout packages might either revert the order or duplicate entries.

You can revert the naming order back to the original, run update-grub2 (or grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg) and everything is back as it was before.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60581992
Why is it called GIMP? Because you're gimping yourself by using it.

I always used the integrated Radeon graphics and never had a problem with radeon driver. I gonna to buy a dedicated GPU because I have todo some medium editing and light Blender stuff. My question is, which between Nvidia and AMD has the best closed drivers for Linux? Considering performance and stability.

Also what do you prefer, the RX 560 or the GTX 1050?
>>
>>60583476

It's generally accepted that nVidia has the better closed source drivers, and AMD has the best open source drivers. AMD open source is catching up to their proprietary. nVidia open source is barely usable for anything other than 2D, and even then it is generally not recommended.

Reasking, but how do i fix this? the drive boots fine under windows and doing error checks on it shows its fine. Ive tried several of the fixes listed but they havent worked. When i use fdisk -l i get

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 63 1953523119 1953523057 931.5G 42 SFS

so we can see that the thing at the beginning is fucked, because im pretty sure its meant to be "boot start 2048" right? and clearly the file type is wrong. So even after i fix it im also wondering why windows even boots it if its stuffed, and why windows doesnt recognise the signature or whatever is stuffed.

Have you disabled "fastboot" or whatever this feature is called?
By default windows 8 and higher does not shutdown by default.
Instead the OS performs a semi-hibernation thingy that lets it boot up quicker.

mount detects hibernation file and prevents the filesystem from being mounted.

Turn off the feature, reboot, shutdown (properly). It should work

From a quick glance it looks like you'll need to install the correct drivers, you can get them from the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/. Not sure how to proceed if you don't have ethernet or mobile tethering available. I guess you could just download the sources on another computer and transfer them using a flash drive.

This is a really dumb question, but how do I make the package from the git clone? The arch iso boots into root user by default and you can't run makepkg as root, and when I make a user and run it as them it says that they don't have the write permissions and I don't have the wifi to install sudo.

Alright guys I got a pretty specific issue here, or maybe not and I'm just a dumbass.

I'm using Linux Mate 17.1 Sarah, built on Ubuntu Xenial. I need to update a program called unar, but the dev only made it available for Yakkety and above. See here: https://pkgs.org/download/unar
Notice how there's no 1.10 for Xenial? Yeah.

So in my infinite wisdom I decided to download the version for Yakkety and see if I could install it, and it calls for a package "libicu57" (see pic), but checking the package manager only shows up to "libicu55" and their site http://site.icu-project.org/download is too full of technical stuff for me to make sense of. Hoping someone can tell me if it's actually possible to get libicu updated to 57 or above and thus get unar 1.10 working on Xenial.

Also, as a last note, here's unar's site https://unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline notice the section that says how to compile manually, I'm thinking should I just try doing that from the start? Never compiled anything before.

When are people going to learn that we don't fucking need more customized bundles of software.

The ONLY distros worth being separate distros are the ones with unique package managers. Everything else is a waste of time.
and if a particular package manager is so restrictive that we have to make multiple distros with it just to get particular configurations of software then it's a shitty package manager and we shouldn't be making new distros with it in the first place.

>>

The same way you would normally, but in place of the image filename you use the device file that represents your DVD drive.

E.g. if you'd normally do

[code}dd if=file.iso of=/dev/sdb[/code]

you now do

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sdb

Similarly if you use cat. I'm not so sure about cp, though - I personally wouldn't run
cp /dev/sr0 /dev/sdb

I've spent the last hour and a quarter trying to learn how to install things from tar.bz2. Linux is a kernel.
There are no Linux desktops
There are no Linux distros
There are no Linux themes
There are no Linux icons
There are no Linux filepickers
There are no Linux partitions
There are no Linux machines
There are no Linux people
There are no Linux boxes
There are no Linux fags
and there are no cute Linux girlfriends
