V20 boitloops and like you said you care about the longevity of the device so that should be a no brainer.
>>
>>60427795
There isn't a catch, it's a great phone. it's often on sale for $330 which makes it $100 cheaper than the OP3T. In many ways it's better than the OP3T too (higher res screen, microsd slot, front facing stereo speakers, HiFi DAC). Only major negative is the average camera.

Anyone good with the Tasker app around?

I've bought into the automated house meme and got myself a philips hue light in the hallway. I can set timers in the philips app but I want it to turn on when I come home (connect to specific SSID) and turn off ~10 min after turning on.

I've setup Tasker with the hue plugin (AutoHue) so it turns on when wifi connects but I'm having trouble with the turn off timer. It seems I can't turn it on again after turning off because it's waiting on my 10min timer.

Here's how I got it in Tasker:
>Profile: Wifi connected (ssid),*, -> Hue on Wifi
>Tasks:
>1. Autohue IP 192.xxx Light: Huelamp On (works when testing the setting every time)
>2. Wait
>10min
>3. Autohue IP 192.xxx Light: Huelamp Off (works when testing the setting every time)

Is there a more reliable way to configure it? A bunch of times when I've gotten it hasn't triggered to turn On but I can't tell where it fails. I've checked the phone when I get close and Tasker does show up with an active profile whenever it connects to my wifi but the light stays off until I fiddle with it like turning wifi on and off.

They both score around 40k in antutu, and like I said there's really no difference on how smooth and lag-free they run (in fact if I remember correctly the OPO was a bit laggier but that's probably just the custom ROM I was running on it)

>>
>>60430230
It has official nougat but only beta and you need to unlock the bootloader to install it
But it also has lineage os 14 support, so why the fuck would you even want that piece of shit miui, are you a masochist?

>>60430267
>>60430340

>>
>>60430052
>If the security is a joke
I didn't say that. I just don't think there exists a phone that's completely unhackable. Even that terrorist iphone eventually got cracked by the FBI. But your phone ending up in the hands of some leet hacker is an unlikely scenario. Having some security is still better than no security.
>>
>>60430362
Yes. You unlock the bootloader (ask for the permission now, it takes several days to get it)
Then you use the adb shell to flash a twrp recovery, then you boot into the recovery and flash the desired rom. if you are flashing the miui official beta only flash it, if you decide to flash the lineage os then after flashing it, you need to also flash gapps or your google shit won't work.
And obviously you need the correct rom for your phone, something like a sony xperia rom won't of course work on your xiaomi, Android isn't windows, there isn't just one version for all phones
Is it worth doing all that? YES.
I would never ever go back to that archaic piece of bloated shit official rom
>>
>>60430340
I thought official MIUI ROMs could be installed with a locked bootloader?
>>
>>60430422
>terrorist iphone
the only way to do that would be to guess the password if the phone was encrypted or by finding a weakness in the encryption and that doesn't happen almost ever anymore
So all you need to do is to have a password long enough so that the CIA super server farm can't guess it with the on gogol of attempts per second
>>
>>60430461

>>
>>60430473
The phone was set to delete all data after 10 incorrect pin attempts so they obviously did find a weakness in the encryption. Regular brute force won't really work as the wait time increases between each incorrect PIN entry.
>>

>>
>>60430747
>after 10 incorrect pin attempts
i am pretty sure they can take the phone apart and clone the memory, and then just run their brute force at no delay to crack the encryption. the automatic deletion and shit only works if you are inputing the password manually into the iphone, but they just downloaded the whole system image and worked on it on their computers

Pls respond

Hi /g/.

I've had a OnePlus One for about 2½ years now and it's getting really slow and weird bugs have started popping up (sometimes I can't answer calls).

I was thinking about installing a new OS tonight since I'm still running on the original Cyanogenmod which is just a swiss cheese of security holes and all kinds of shit.

What's your recommendation /g/? What is the go-to OS for an old OnePlus One?
>>
>>60432306
Yeah that's kinda what I noticed.... I dunno why, I just don't really like that phone much. Meanwhile the duraforce XD fits all my requirements and has a bigger battery to boot. but it's not verizon compatible. And AT&T's jerked my parents around with their bill and at one point fucked up their internet in a way that it took 2 weeks to get someone to figure out the fuck happened (weird story, I can greentext it if anyone wants ammo to scare people off from At&T.) So I'm not going with them. However I am fine with "out-dated" tech. I started off with a motorola droid 2 when the 4 was the latest and greatest. The only reason I'm even looking at new phones is the 3 (my current phone) is showing it's age when it comes to actually pulling up mobile sites. I can get 4chan reliably, and my bank and well that's about it. anything else is more complicated than the 3 can handle now. I tried a droid 4 last summer, but, it did not impress (possibly may have had a bad one as it was losing close to 10% battery every hour while in airplane mode) and ended up going back to the 3 as a result since I didn't just toss it like some people might.

>>60431956
No I just don't want to have to take a small loan out, or get it on credit... I've worked too damn hard to cashflow my life. I'm not going to fuck that up over a phone.
>>
Currently on a galaxy nexus, want something faster with actually okay battery life. A decent camera or dual-sim would be a good bonus. Country is canada, carrier is virgin. Ideally I would pay around 400 canadian pesos but more is fine if it's in line with features.
>>
>>60432662
Android phones get really slow over the years. IIRC, the memory sectors fragment over time. You'll probably be better off going with Oxygen OS if you want to replace the OS since Cmod is not supported anymore.

>>
>>60436731
I don't do it enough to cause any issues, and I'm using a prepaid MVNO, so if I get in trouble I can just activate a new SIM and pop it in.

I was just confused at first because I told a friend that hotspot worked fine, and customer support later told me they didn't support it when my friend couldn't tether on his iPhone.
>>
>>60436819
Whos your MVNO? Don't the require you to register when you activated it?

So I have a rooted Galaxy S7, and I'm interested in an app that has a free trial version and apparently after 30 days you have to buy the pro.

Simple Mobile, which is a T-Mobile MVNO. I work at a cellular store so I can activate a SIM through the dealer portal. Literally just enter an ICCID and the desired plan and you're done.

That's where things get weird, the NSA leak showed that they had exploits for pretty much all versions of IOS meaning they did not even have to ask Apple. You could argue that these organisations don't want to speak or share info but that seems highly implausible. What is more other similar juridical cases where running to unlock IPhones in different courts. My guess would be that their real aim was to have a backdoor in some Encryption standerd or at least press in this direction. When done properly there is no way even the those organisations could get in. If they included a backdoor they would able to READ all content they are able to find on the web.

Currently there is a big push to encrypt our data, this would blow a huge hole in those organisations their work. So they are pressuring companies to release flawed versions of these encryption systems so they can continue to read people's info.

Ideally they would want some backdoor that is "Just for us :^)", which always works out great right? To protect us from "Muh terrorists :^)".

But they have to remain silent now because of that massive leak, but they will continue to try and pressure encryption until they get what they want. Politicians not knowing what is or how it works just try to also spin it in "Muh terrorists".
>>
>>60436962
>Dealer Portal
And there it is
>>
>>60437099
It's no surprise that they were always able to get in. The whole San Bernardino shooter fiasco was just an attempt to set precedent for being able to strongarm manufacturers into making backdoor tools for them. Also no surprise when Apple's argument that those tools would eventually be leaked ended up being proven correct.

This is not my home board but I'm hoping you guys don't mind my normie question ITT

I need a new phone, but I honestly only use my smartphone to text, call, go on facebook, and take pictures. I barely use the "smart" part of it and constantly wish there was like a 100 dollar phone that only had these features but had good battery life.

Is there a phone that can do this reliably and not cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks for reading. Pic unrelated but all I can offer.

The efficiency of iPhones and iOS is offset by their tiny as fuck batteries.

I played with a 5s for a while and although its idle drain is amazing, as soon as I started doing anything demanding my battery meter plummeted like a rock.

The iPhone 6s isn't much better. Optimizations don't matter much when you only have 1715 mAh to work with.

My Nexus 5x only has a 2700 mAh battery, but I average 10%-12% usage an hour, including YouTube.

Near to stock android, and overall just a reliable phone with pretty good battery. An SD card slot would be nice but isnt a deal breaker at this point bc I know

A. My options are pretty limited with sprint
and
B. After the shit bootloop issue my G4 has gotten multiple times in the 2 years ive had it im not going to be too excited to commit to them again.

>Budget
Well basically most new phones are around the same lease price ballpark, so as long as it's around 25$ a month lease Im fine with that.

>Size
Dont really care about this much either. My G4s size is fine, I personally feel as if a bigger screen just isnt worth the price increase or small battery increase that may occur. So a 5 inch screen is fine for me.

Overall, I really just want a phone that can work on sprint that is all around pretty reliable and get's android updates fast. My past two phones have been an S4 and then the G4, My S4 gave me some insane problem where the "phone" app was killing my battery even in cyanogenmod and other custom roms, not to mention the screen also randomly died on me once and the charging port broke on it's own randomly as well, which I replaced myself but Samsung and sprint tried to charge 100$ for. My G4 has given me the bootloop issue multiple times but besides that I can't complain too much. It's been pretty reliable and most issues I come across seem to be software issues. I've been considering a pixel but I figured I'd ask here first for other opinions.

Do yourself a favor and end your service
You don't need the latest flagship to have a good phone
You don't need to pay upwards of 70-100$ a month for shitty service
Just buy a phone and get a prepaid SIM for a GSM network and save yourself
>>
>>60441024
I would love to do that, however it's not an option for me as I have a family on the same plan as me and I'd prefer everything to be centralized rather than everyone having a different carrier etc...
>>

Man, I truly feel sorry for you then
When will everyone's phone be paid off? Considering Sprint now basically has no contracts except for the phones, when the last contract is up, just drop the service, I did and I'm spending less money than I did with Sprint, and I used to sell the shitty service
>>
>>60441090
It is pretty bad, the thing that has made me keep it throughout the years is the unlimited for everyone. I am grandfathered into an old unlimited plan before they started jacking prices up ridiculously. It's not gonna be fun to have everyone on a prepaid thing when god knows how much data, texts, phone calls etc... Everyone is going to use. I end up spending around 300 a month total for 4 lines unlimited everything. Some months we will use a ridiculous amount of data, im talking like 8gb a line bc everyone uses spotify and other data heavy services, I looked elsewhere (AT&T, Verizon) and even with truly not unlimited data they still end up costing more because like I said, im grandfathered into a plan that had a discount included bc of my job and everything plus I have TRULY unlimited data bc of that.

Be honest, what do you use NFC for?

I have a big phone with NFC and a 5" without it.

If I want to connect the phone with NFC to a bluetooth headset with nfc then it's

go through the settings and turn nfc on and turn the bluetooth headset on and try to connect them with that

or just turn bluetooth on and the headset on and pair the devices

to me it's just an extra step. All I've ever done with it was check how it works.

The passport still runs BB software but you have playstore access and the apps will run, only issue is it's an older SD 801 SoC, and I'm not sure for how long it's software will have support
The Priv has the keyboard and a newer chipset, but the 808 is flawed and has the tendency to overheat, also the photo processing software isn't as good as the lens the phone has, and I don't think the 808 will give the performance you want
Between the two I'd go for the passport, or wait for the Keyone

>>60447523
Well ignore the idiots telling people to buy the Samsung Galaxy S8+, it's a fragile mess with shotty software and a decent camera and you'll never get a decent screen protector or case on one to protect it
Typically the Google phones are the ones that will last year's due to the software support, and from what I've been reading apparently the Pixels have good cameras as well, but they're almost unobtainable due to Google's fuckery
Which leads me to recommend either wait for the OnePlus5 or Axon 8, or if you can wait you can get the OnePlus3T or the Axon 7
ZTE enrolls you in a program when you register your phone that provides free protection for two years and if you want to upgrade to the next big thing will give you discounts, but it's ultimately up to, just don't buy into the flagship hype because it's becoming increasingly irrelevant to pay that much for a good phone

Flashing a ROM won't add network bands
>>
>>60448780
Cool, where can I get that rom?
>>
>>60448643
>Redmi note 4x on amazon
link?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06Y1KYR6R/
>>
>>60448873
Then why is it when you can order the 4X with the Note 4's I-ROM/firmware it magically starts picking up the additional bands? It has been confirmed by anons on here that that is the case. All the modems are the same, they're just locked at the firmware level.

>>60448915
Google it
>>
>>60449131
Googled it but all i could find was global rom.
>>
>>60441671
Shitty UI is easily fixed by a custom launcher or even MIUI skin. No quick charge is a bummer, though battery life is god-tier.
>>
>>60449230
How dense are you? That's the one dingus
>>
>>60449131
Believe me, it wont work, the modems are different
>>
>>60449309
No, they aren't, that would be quite an expensive undertaking to do that
All the modems are the same between 625s, it's the FIRMWARE that controls which bands are picked up by the modem

Need a phone for my mom.
She is still "tech illetrate" but she now has a job that asks her to be a lot more numeric things.
I'll buy her a phone for mother's day.
Is the iPhone SE the best choice possible ?
It needs to :
>take good pictures and videos
>correct battery
>good call quality
>answer emails/sms ...
>be updated so they don't say "uhhh ur too poor get a new fone xDDD" in 2 years

349€ for a 16GB one seems like the perfect deal.

N5x
>>

Model number says Redmi Note 4.
>>
>>60449465
Too big.
She has smol hands.

>asking /g/ aspies this

They'll just recommend you some obscure Gentoophone or some shit that will make your mother hate and disown you. Get her an iPhone.
>>
>>60449441
Blackberry Passport
>>
>>60447629
Thanks for the help. Still a little too steep of a price. I don't mind fiddling or using custom roms, so I suppose I'll have to look around some more.
>>
>>60449477
whats the cpu? sd625 or mediatek!
>>
>>60450010
Good luck then
The Axon 7 is going to be the cheapest phone that'll last a few years with custom ROM support

The Note series of xiaomi phones do not have a good DAC so don't expect too much, buy the Mi series if you want decent audio or better yet an HTC/Sony phone, LG is also good with audio but it isn't called Loops Good© for nothing.

Flash dolby atmos/viper4fx on your redmeme, then fuck around with the equalizer if you're not satisfied with the default config on bass/lows/highs and whatever, even if you decide to not mess around and just flash dolby and turn it on it's already a massive improvement, if it still sounds like shit then buy some better earbuds as well.

>Iphone 7 Plus Red

I really love the dual camera thing, only use the phone for photos and calling and apps like snapcuck.

Which one of these would you guys recommend? Which one is the ultimate meme-phone?
>>
>>60450018
Mediatek
>>
>>60450796
Real dual camera phones are V10/20, G5/6
iphones 2nd camera is just dof filter and huawei's a hipstwr monochrome camera.

Moto G5 always, performance between it and last years moto g4 plus is identical despite the G5 packing a budget snapdragon VS the midrange one in the G4+, the G5 also has a bigger (iirc 2800 vs 2300) removable battery unlike the xperia, also one of my nieces got an xperia XA after she broke the Z3 she used to own and the fucking thing shattered after she lightly sat on it, inb4 whale, she's 9 and weighs like less than 30 kg trust me we've fugged while standing.

How do you know it's the mediatek version? It doesn't say that on the Amazon listing, only mentions "octa-core" which would make it the Snapdragon CPU, as the Mediatek is deca-core. What does it say in "about phone", octa-core or deca-core?
>>
>>60451126
If it lead with MT instead of MSM, it's a Mediatek
>>
>>60451098
Thanks mate.
>>
>>60451151
What?
>>
>>60451211
In the listing, if it says MXXXXXX Octa-core
the MT = Mediatek SoC
MSM = Qualcomm
>>
Moto z play or s7

it says Deca in the about phone section, so its mediatek
Also swapped to the global rom but still no tmobile service.
>>
>>60451254
Z Play, how is this a question?
>>
>>60451254
The S7 is prettier and more future proof due to its 2016 flagship chipset, 2k resolution and amount of ram but touchwizz fucks all that in the ass making it irrelevant unless you go for custom roms, all the Z play offers is expensive gimmicks and a bigger battery, specs are identical to the G5 plus sans amoled screen.
>>
>>60451273
>buys a Mediatek phone with no US LTE bands
You double-fucked up. Should have got the Redmi Note 4 Global. I'd look into returning that phone.

Hey /g/ need your help with this as I can't find a solution. I'm trying to access data on the internal memory of 2 bricked phones without root, can't find a proper program that can do this most of them don't detect the phones. Both phones are LG P999DW and HTC amaze 4G.
>>
>>60451348
Yeah gonna have to. This was advertised on amazon as international version but came with wrong rom and processor.
>>
>>60451512
If it's saying it's the 32GB Octa-core, and they're staying it's the international model, it probably has the SD 625 and not the Mediatek
>>
>probably has the SD 625
it didn't though
>>60451273
>>
>>60451749
Send it back, it's not an international model, only the SD 625s were international models

thoughts on the s8+? I heard it stutters.

Using project Fi. Wondering what phone to upgrade to from my Nexus 6. I can switch back to ATT if needed, but still like Android.

What ROM did you choose for you Redmi?
>>
>>60448621
Maybe I just miss my G4 because it was the best phone I ever had for 2+ years, but I swear the camera was better. I can't seem to get a good shot with my G6 unless the lighting is absolutely perfect.
