is there a distro with a live cd < 350mb that has a graphical interface (so no net inst isos) but also has a lot of packages so I can install a lot on it later/gradually? (so not like puppy linux or damn small linux or tiny core linux whose purpose is kind of to stay small and limited)
>>
>>60386500

That doesn't seem logical.
Either way, I started reading about Wiki editing and this seems so hacky.
>>
>>60386527

Why do you need a "graphical" installer?
All major distributions offer a net installer and if using your arrow keys to select options in a ncurses interface is too complicated for you, then you shouldn't use computers in the first place.

I enjoy using i3 a lot, and dislike how gnome isn't tiling and how it runs 600 different daemons, each with 10 different PIDs, and how laggy it is, but gnome is just very aesthetic and convenient, because I can easily manage my external monitors etc with a single application, and change my wifi network by clicking on the top bar. Is there a way to use a similar control panel in i3wm? Could I somehow get proper tiling on gnome, or use gnome with i3 as the window manager?
>>
>>60386527
>live usb under 400mb
if you mean something that boots to a desktop environment and is that small, the answer is basically no. (other than the small distros you mentioned). Why do you need a usb that small? Anyway, the debian netinst is about 350mb, and includes a GUI for installation, but it's literally just as easy to use the ncurses installers for most distros.
>>
>>60386572
sorry for not being clear
i mean it has a graphical interface for the installed OS. debian standard iso is 400mb and offers no DE/xorg and one installs it and they are left with command line.
>>
>>60386623

The Debian netinstaller asks you which environment you want to install. You obviously missed that. So does the Ubuntu net installer. I'm pretty sure that even the OpenSUSE one does. I haven't tested Fedora.

A website cannot be "infected". Stop using such cringe-worthy words in this context.

Memes aside, even in Windows you can achieve a certain baseline of security just by not permanently running your PC as administrator.
>>
What good Cinnamon distros do you recommend? Preferably not rolling release and definitely not Mint.
>>
>>60387161

That's such a false sense of security. You run random executables, you are in danger of getting a keylogger installed or becoming part of a literal botnet. Your "anti virus" software can't help you much there.
>>
>>60387205

You install the same Cinnamon software on any distribution, assuming it's the same version and ignoring a few negligible compile-time options.
Only a retard choose his distribution based on the desktop environment.
>>
>>60387182
Sorry, you're right.

This is what i did before:
sudo xrandr --newmode "1024x768_60.00" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771 775 798 -hsync +vsync

And then this line gives me the error:
sudo xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1024x768_60.00"
>>
>>60387212
I don't run random executables. I just want to know what to do when I click on a website that has Javascript exploits or does any other bad stuff when I try to open it.
>>
>>60387196
So I should make a separate user account with no administrator priviledges?

I am sorry if all these questions annoy you, but you've got to understand some people will mess up something sooner or later, that's why antivirus software exists.
>>
>>60387328
user account control exists for a reason
>>
>>60387267
Use adblockers. Also, use your browser from a chroot
>>
>>60387328
You will use an account without admin privileges for your everyday use. Of course you need to remember your admin account details in case you need to install stuff. In many distros you will use sudo to do stuff you shouldn't be able to as a normal user. In windows you have the UAC for that. but please, don't use windows.

I just stared under Debian 8.8 jessie under GNOME 3 (first time I use a Linux distro, I'm used to WME/XP/7) and can't modify my default screenshot directory. I tried this but it doesn't work, even in command line (picture related) :

Even if I changed my default folder to "file:///home/neun/Pictures/ScreenShots" on dconf-editor, it keeps coming in "Pictures"
Any Idea on what I'm doing wrong?

It's not a deal breaker or anything (and I have to admit cinnamon was a lot better than when I tried it with Mint), but it's something that would be nice since a few of my most used programs minimize to system tray and if I'm working on one monitor, wouldn't hate to have the other one free for that shit too

Ah, well. Do you get the same error as in the screenshot, or something else? Because that "the connection is closed" message tells me that root's gsettings failed to talk with the settings daemon, because root is in fact not running the gnome settings daemon - not running gnome at all.

You are running it, though, or should be, so either you should get a different error, or if you're getting the same one it means the settings daemon is not working properly, or, quite likely, I'm completely wrong since I'm talking out of my ass basically.

In the light of recent ransomware attack I've decided to switch my laptop (main home computer) from Windows 8 to GNU/Linux. I have experience of using Xubuntu as a work computer and can fix problems by googling and looking up on AskUbuntu.

I'm looking for something that once installed wouldn't require any tinkering, ricing, etc. and doesn't cause any hard to fix problems too often. All I need is a web browser, a music player, LibreOffice and PHP for DokuWiki. Is Ubuntu the best option available or would you suggest something else.

I don't know anything about linux but i have downloaded arch, its very small iso size was really tempting, i want to dual boot on my laptop which has win10, and only 256 ssd i am thinking of making a drive of 30-40gb for arch, but on all installation guide there is no option of to install it on a specific windows drive i am really confused, i dont want to make mess and accidentally install it on windows drive, i do have spare pc on which i will try it on vm.
But i am really lost, and don't know where will arch be installed if i dual boot, and what should i do. Help would be much appreciated.

You might want to get familiar with partitioning before doing something like this. Like the other guy suggested, try an easier distro first. Ubuntu or one of its derivates might be good. The pro of those is that they detect and recognize windows partitions and help you not messing those up accidentially. Pay close attention to the suggestions it makes for partitioning. Don't let it do everything automatically, but let it show you what it does. You can always follow the default suggestions anyway.

What you want for your installation is free space. It won't be a windows drive at all. If you don't have free space, you might need to downsize one or several of your windows partitions.

I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop for a while, still very sluggish with it but overall a very enjoyable experience.

I took a couple redhat/fedora classes in college but a lot of the knowledge I learned in theory and was too lazy to apply in practice so essentially I didn't comprehend what I learned

We went over how we should partition a new OS but I didn't know how I should choose partition sizes etc

I liked that I learned with error, chose the defaults for my partitions which for my laptop was a 900mb boot partition. From error I found 900mb pretty small but I've also come to learn that all previous kernals are saved and how to clean them up

Also I want to praise the fact how this OS handles HDMI out. It saves video preferences, by default doesn't sleep my laptop when I close the lid, and doesn't crash the video driver when I close the lid.

Question to any VMware users out there, how does the accelerated graphics option compare to a GPU pass through with KVM?

KVM is considerably much more work to setup over VMware and I have no personal issues using non-free software.

I'd consider making my desktop Linux if I can game through VMware, I don't play anything intense.

Why are you against .deb files? It is the most prevalent and stable package installer.

If you want a system that works, consider PeppermintOS. In my experience it was the most stable GNU/Linux distribution, very rarely giving me shit. Plus Firefox works with Netflix on it.

Other than the Netflix, Fedora is great. I don't think you should avoid Fedora because of my issue. I can't solve this with google because it seems to work for literally everyone else.

Right now, I'm trying to decide between Antergos (already installed Arch a few times, can't be bothered to do so anymore), Debian Testing and Void

If I get Netflix to work, I'll stick with Fedora though.

Shrink your windows partition, make a swap partition (same size as your RAM is a good idea), make a root partition for arch (rest of the free space)
That's basically it when it comes to partitioning
Mount it, pacstrap, fstab, install and configure a bootloader, configure users, locales,... and you are done

Debian assumes some moderate knowledge from the end-user. I don't recommend Mint either, they had a huge security blender a year or two ago where the installation ISO was distributing malware. Consider Ubuntu. it's a very noob friendly distro. Just don't get attached to Unity because it's going to be discontinued in October. Install one of the desktop environment based spin-offs. I'd recommend either Xubuntu or Kubuntu, they will feel similar to Windows.

Is there anyway to allow Visual Studio / Any program to make a Makefile for me, so that I can work on my linux laptop without making one myself? Its a big project (to me) and I haven't written a makefile that uses so many libraries.

Also, there's a library I can't included with -l<library> hence why I want all the files to be already handled so I can focus on getting the library linked properly

This. Vanilla shit from upstream works fine. The majority of problems are introduced from fag developers patching shit to make themselves feel important. There's really no good reason to fuck with shit.

I have two audio sinks: USB sound card and also HDMI audio out (for speakers).

Anyone have a command line script to switch audio between the two of them? Basically, I'd like to bind the script to a keypress so I can just toggle between the two.

I'm not a programmer and suck at scripting. Anyone have a script that works?

Thanks!

Considering it happens on two completely different distros, my guess is that it's an issue with some component both of them use, or an issue with the wifi driver it automatically detects and uses...or a hardware issue. Is there a terminal command (or just a program) I could use to figure out why exactly it's dropping?
