This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

The best use of inaccurate obsolete technology is to turn the wrist fedora into a cuff fedora. This helps you "appreciate" the fine craftsmanship

Yes, but it really isn't to my taste aesthetically so I wear the watch on a perlon or alligator/croc strap.

>>60243279
True, personally I dont. Most pictures I see online show them worn like this with the excess length under the keeper (pic related). Another alternative which some people like (including myself) is using an Omega style deployant clasp to replace the flismy EULIT buckle.

Pic related is with an Omega-style deployant clasp.

While the clasp is bulky relative to the strap, its nicely counterbalances the watch head and makes it much more stable and less prone to shifting on the wrist.

Did you forget to take off your trip when you wanted to make a serious post?

But yeah I agree that Rolex has no point in making a sapphire caseback, even though they actually do make a lot of their movements really beautiful. I don't even like sapphire casebacks on high horology, as it "cheapens" the experience of getting to see the intricate details on the rare occasions you take the back off.

Given the market segments Seiko targets with that line, there is no way they would even consider trying to sell a manual wind chronograph in it.

I don't think you can really get away from how thicc it is, either, as there aren't really any production automatic chronograph movements much thinner that 14mm to 15mm, as far as i know.

junghans_667.jpg

Today one of these came in (pic not mine) for a repair, and it's a fucking amazing early quartz movement. It has like one broken part that has to be replaced, but it can't be done since it's only available at J.Borel and the boss here refuses to deal with foreign invoices. I'm so fucking livid about it, it pains me that I can't save this great Junghans movement.

Only way I can do it is if I buy the watch for myself and order the part from my own pocket. I'm tempted to make an offer to the guy even if the watch is all gold plated, gold plated bracelet, with non-standard lugs (of course, fucking late 70's bullshit) and gold dial even.
>>
>>60245400
so what, do you tell the guy "we can't fix it because we can't be fucked ordering a part"? that's shitty
>>
>>60245312
It is indeed. I saw one in Dubai (of all places) and was charmed enough to pick one up though.

Pretty useless device to tell you the truth. Quartz slide rules are way better.
>>
>>60245440
yeah i'm sure yours can barely keep time
>>
>>60245420
I'll go with "spare parts are extinct" which is not far from the truth, I only found parts for the movement on J.Borel, Ebay and Cousins were barren.
>>
>>60245420
But yeah, it's shitty that the top won't deal with it. They can't be assed with anything watch related when the store makes a larger profit a day from jewelry than what profit I give them from watches in two weeks. And most of that is battery changes anyway, not saving obscure vintage movements.

That is literally the only blue linen dialed LM Special 5216-8020 I've ever seen. I just did a little searching around and all the other ones I've seen are either silver linen dials or brown linen dials.

That is not to say that he dial is a repaint, as it looks exactly like the silver and brown dials, I just couldn't find another example.

If the dial being blue is not make or break for you, then i would pass on that example as the case has been polished to the point of rounding over the edges (compare to pic related example) and the price is much higher than you could get a comparable non-blue dialed example for off Yahoo! Japan Auctions.

I just quickly checked Y! and found those models tend to go for less than 10,000 Yen over there, which is way cheaper than the price in that eBay listing.

The gold tourbillion is in fact a $26 pugeot pin lever, I'm afraid. But a cool little skeleton

The small second is an election Grand Prix from the 40s. It was my great grandmothers watch that I inherited when my grandmother died last year. Cleaned up and serviced keeps pretty good time for a 70 year old piece.

Yeah, you can choose an oyster bracelet instead of the president, but the president is exclusive to this model, unlike the oyster which is on every sports model and a jubilee is usually an option, or has been in the past.

President bracelet is exclusive to the daydate for men but ladies solid gold/platinum datejusts have that option too.

I agree.
One of my daydreams: 36mm everose day-date, fluted bezel, president bracelet, black baton dial.

I'm torn: do I aim for the 36mm day-date? Or should I aim to venture into traditional dressy "haute horology" with all it's bullshit and servicing pitfalls?
(seriously, look up JLC and PP horror stories of shit just breaking right out of the box and the flaming fucking hoops some people force themselves through to justify ownership).

At least with the rolex, despite being just a chunk of gold surrounding a rather pedestrian, but very reliable and time tested movement, I'm more confident with it in general. They, from all accounts, seem to be more robust and WR would never be a worry. A true one watch for all occasions.

It's about 30k though. There's a lot of options out there when you're talking nice watches in this range, but one could do worse. Family members that have had rolex watches never had complaints with aftersales service and care. IWC, JLC and even Patek of late has been utter shit.

I hope that they make the calibre 3255 available for the 36mm; that little machine is fantastic!

It appears to be the same diameter, but I don't know about height and whether or not the 36mm case would hold it. But fuck, from 48hrs in the 3155 to 70hrs reserve for the 3255? I'd hold out for that.
>>
>>60244052
>>
>>60249542
Noice but do you really need that many divers? I would sell maybe 1-2 of them and buy a cool chrono/sports watch
>>
>>60249526
To be honest the 3255 is not that pedestrian. As far as time/date movements go, you are already VERY far into diminishing returns anywhere past a 3255. Besides decoration, what does a Geneva Seal time/date movement give you that a 3255 doesn't?

>>60249609

>>
>>60249605
>Besides decoration, what does a Geneva Seal time/date movement give you that a 3255 doesn't?
Well that's just it: it's "pedestrian" purely because it's not finished as nicely as stuff from PP,VC,ALS etc. You're totally right.

Even then though, I've seen some fuckery going on with the entry and lower mid level movements say from Patek (lange seems to be more consistent) that points to the fact that they sorta half arse their basic movements. VC and Lange, not so much. Looking into this, I get the sense that you really have to go into the higher end models from patek to get something done to the standard that they used to all be made to back in the day (like, 20 years ago). But even then, reading about some schmuck who dropped off his minute repeater for service (modern model, I forget the ref.) and the repair centre totally fuck it up (twice) makes me doubt the brand as a whole.

Lange I hear great stuff about. VC is a non-entity and I have not even second hand experience with them. Both owned by Bitchmont though. I don't like that.

If the 36mm DD already came with the 3255 I think I would have a clearer goal, not that the cal.3155 is bad, especially with the updated hairspring and shock absorption, but the 3255 is just so much better that I think it would be worth waiting for. I've got time. I will wait a year. Not optimistic about Rolex making a change, but I don't need to rush.

Dumb and badly proportioned in general. If you have a really large wrist it would look better on you than the original size, but it still wouldn't be a good looking watch.

>>
>>60250495
Why ever would you think that that would stop them?

They are the reason behind declining standards and horrible designs. Every luxury (and not so) brand under the sun targets the chinese market to feed the ever hungry recently monied hoardes.

Watches are no different. It doesn't even have to work well, it just has to be large totem that signals to all the other chinese that the wearer has "made it" or is better than them. That's all. Amongst a billion identical worker drone ants, psychologically, making it to the top of that teeming pile isn't enough, they have to show it.

Bigger the better. Festooned hideously with diamonds. Yeck.

Conspicuous as fuck has been the name of the game. Same thing as with the smartphone market, with asia driving for ever larger devices, reversing 20 years of progress in that regard.

Is it coincidence that makers have, in the past 2 years started re-releasing smaller models that aren't so retardedly huge? Same period of time the chinese have stopped spending (as much) on luxury trinkets as the government has tried to curb down on corruption and the usual trinket giving methods that they use to curry favour.

I live in the region, and it seems like only really old men have any sense of taste and style anymore with their little gold watches. Modest. Fitting. Everyone else wears things ridiculously disproportionate for their wrists.

I see it so much it's basically normal now. BLech.

The fuckhuge fad couldn't end any fucking sooner.

The Junkers (pronounced YOON-kers, btw) you linked is fine. Note that it is not a small watch at 40mmx12mm and the bauhaus all-dial style will wear large. The lugs look short and angled, which will help (I've seen one reddit post claiming a lug to lug of 44mm, which is good, though no confirming references). The Miyota 9132 isn't much to look at through the back but the 91xx series is fine. Note that the 24 hour dial is a slaved 24 hour hand as far as I can tell, NOT a GMT, so you can't use it as a second time zone.

I like the old Seiko divers, 6105 especially but already owning an almost 7 year old SKX007 I didn't think that getting a Turtle would be worth while when they were released, until few days ago I learned that there are these limited edition models, one in my favourite shade of green with only 3500 made.

You could get almost 3 "normal" Turtles with the price of a green one but the limited run of my favourite shade of green makes it special enough to be worth while getting company for my SKX007 even though they are quite similar watches.

Well, two watches in a span of almost ten years is enough. It is a bad habit of buying cheap shit all the time instead of a expensive one time purchase and I see it online all the time where people are getting watches worth few hundred dollars every month.

from a full charge probably 3 or 4 days in darkness, if you're wearing it, and it's trying to receive radio signals twice a day.
if you aren't wearing it, probably a week, as it enters a low power sleep mode when it's not being moved around.

In response to your pic.
You could spend 3000 dollars on something more interesting than a watch. If all you care about is your image then by all means buy a luxury watch that 'exudes masculinity'. Its really more about your priorities.

>You could spend 3000 dollars on something more interesting than a watch
Like what? People have preferences ypu know.
>>
>>60257513
Yes, If you really really want a specific watch I can see you spending that much on one. It's more of a status symbol though. That's why I said if your main priority is your image then by all means buy one. I would rather spend 10 dollars on a Casio F-91W and keep the rest to invest in a hobby. Mainly because watches are not my hobby. But the pic is saying there's no reason for someone not to own one in 2017.

Ray II is up on massdrop for $150
>>
>>60257662
isn't that the normal price though
>>
>>60257691
I tend to see them on eBay at around $160-190
Amazon they're $180 and up.
>>
>>60257716
Who would you turn to for a warranty if the massdrop orients shit the bed?
>>
>>60257763
Manufacturer warranty should still apply.
Not as if any ebay seller would have any better policies in regards to warranty.
>>
>>60257716
oh ok

>But the pic is saying there's no reason for someone not to own one in 2017.
Because the F-91W is a ridiculous manchild watch. Some even would say a shitter.
>>
Watched are very expensive!

>Watched are very expensive!
What did he retardly meant?
>>
>>60258016
It does what you need it to. Of course its a shit watch, its not meant to be fancy. Its light and practical.
>>
>>60258016
>>60258139
Also,
You may have misinterpreted what i meant, the pic says there's no reason to not have a 3000 dollar Rolex in 2017.

>3255
Did some looking around and saw that the cal.3255 is actually thinner than the old 3155.
I guess that with nearly 30 years going buy you'd hope that they'd progress.

Still, Cal.3255 is 5.4mm tall and 29.1mm in diameter, whereas 3155 is 6mm/28.5mm. Not as high, but it won't fit. Oh well.
>>
Are smart watches still frowned upon?
>>
>>60259298
by anyone with half a brain who realises how shit they are, yes
>>
>>60259298
They're fine, but I would never wear one.

>Atmos is so good
Atmos is mesmerizing. You can watch the large balance wheel move slowly, completing a cycle in 1 minute, while watching the mechanism from all sides. Expensive but well worth it, speaking from experience.
>>
>>60254044
I fucking hope
>>
>>60258016
>Some even would say
Well, then you are back to status again.

Not him but I would actually like a practical watch but most designs appear to be hatched by designers with ADHD, and not in a good way.
