So I'm thinking of buying a Vortex RGB POK3R keyboard and replacing w.e switches I get with cherry mx greens. However I'm left wondering if the LED's are soldered onto the switches or not. Am I dreaming, thinking changing switches on LED keyboards is anything simple or is it the same process as changing non LED switches? Nothing exists that includes RGB and cherry mx greens which is why I'm thinking of doing this in the first place. That and I would really like to try a 60% keyboard.

Keyboards with green switches really limits ya for choices but I'm currently using the WASD tkl keyboard with cherry mx greens and I have no complaints so far. One thing to note is their keycaps are utterly mediocre but you can purchase one of their keyboards without any keycaps and use your own if you so desire.

Hello /mkg/ I'm in the market for another keyboard since the leds on my ducky shine of 5 years are going out. I was looking for a 75% or a tkl, I've already done a bit of research and it looks like mx clears is the way to go since I enjoy the mx browns on my ducky but they're a tad too light and I have no idea how to solder for the zealios switch. I'm currently looking at http://m.ebay.com/itm/Varmilo-VA87M-Keyboard-Cherry-MX-Clear-switches-White-Light-PBT-Side-printing-/272587814135?var=&hash=item3f777ff4f7%3Am%3AmUw4Ft-Oae3_C1HwZKjWuOw&_trkparms=pageci%253A9b797b1e-2d21-11e7-9721-74dbd1800984%257Cparentrq%253Abb95b51015b0abc2c6af6294ffff45c8%257Ciid%253A3 is it a good choice? Also I hear mx clears have a annoying ping to them is this true? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Its funny right when mechanical keyboards hit an all time high in popularity this general starts to die. Through out the whole month of march these threads were getting 100-150 posts before it 404ed. Occasionally a thread might get into the high 200s, but none of them hit the bump limit. I guess now that mechanical keyboards are mainstream all the hipsters have moved on.

>>
>>60135848
Yes. The pok3r uses a shitty metal case thats worse then the one on the magicforce. Also there is a dip switch on the back that switches caps lock and control.
>>
>>60135806
Is the plum actually made by Noppoo? I'm a bit of a noppoo fan boy and that would maybe influence my decision on picking up a plum board or not.

The Noppoo website has been down for a while now I have no idea whats going on.

Another question guys, since our generals are dying, as someone who much prefers blues to reds but sometimes bottoms out blues pretty hard do you think I would enjoy a topre or topre clone? I don't bottom out on my laptop which butterfly switches and chicklet keys but there is something about the mech that causes me too. Probably because I enjoy typing on it so fucking much.
Torn between a topre for my next board or something heavier than a Noppoo blue switch.
>>
>>60135900
What the fuck, why is it nearly double the price? I like how small it looks, but I think I'll just get the memeforce 68.
>>
>>60135929
Not that guy but the magic force is a pretty good board. If you do get one I suggest the black version. Disappointed with my silver one. You'll also want to replace the keycaps, they're pretty fucking ugly.
I would strongly suggest a 75% like the drevo gramr over it since it's the same price and you get the best layout in the fucking world but up to you.
I hate the way the black switches in my magaicforce feel, after a year they don't feel how I remember reds/blacks feeling but it may just be that they need lube or something.

Considering getting some 3m dinoc and pulling a thinkpad-style mod on the case of my board. Looks good.
>>
>>60135952
I actually do not like the black version, purely on a aesthetic level. Why are you disappointed with the silver ones? And what switches do you recommend?

Also, I like 60%, so I went with the 68s.
>>
>>60135961
Sushi keycaps! Delicious.
>>
>>60135929
The pok3r is more programmable, and comes with PBT keycaps. Also only the top of the magicforce is metal, while the bottom half is plastic.
>>
>>60135961
nice caps weeb. what board btw?

and is that a salmon artisan? what the hell is that?
>>
>>60135878
yeah its an excuse to buy a new keyboard, how hard is it to replace the led anyways?
>>
>>60135963
OKay that's fine, I'm a wow player so I really missed the function row.
I strongly suggest blues if you don't mind a bit of noise. I've never had a room mate mention the noise and my door is very thing.
I previously had a board with cherry reds and I loved it. I stopped using a PC for 2 years and bought a memeforce with blacks(I think it was listed as reds) and thought I liked it. Then I bought another board but with a blue switch and now the memeforce is literally unusable for me, it feels like a mushy piece of shit. I will definitely never buy another linear switch but I suspect that it might need lubrication because it's so old and isn't a genuine cherry switch.
>>60135975
It's not my keyboard, it was on reddit and I thought it was really nice. No it's not a salmon artisan it comes with the set from a seller on aliexpress. It's called enjoypbt japanese. I believe the board is a custom built one but it's very popular as I see it all over the place.
>>
>>60136023
>Then I bought another board but with a blue switch and now the memeforce is literally unusable for me, it feels like a mushy piece of shit. I will definitely never buy another linear switch but I suspect that it might need lubrication because it's so old and isn't a genuine cherry switch.
I'm confused. First you're recommending the Memeforce with Blues, and now you call it mushy? What do you mean by this? What board are you referring to?

Also, Gateron or Cherry blues for the memeforce?
>>
>>60136058
>owned a board years ago with reds, liked it
>bought meme force with reds(blacks), liked it
>bought board with blues, loved it
>now can't use memeforce with reds(blacks), feels mushy

Well fuck me, turns out this company called Glorious PC gaming race makes "modular keyboards" that lets you change your switches without the need to desold and has rgb. I will have to wait for Q3 2017 for the release of the TKL version though since I definitely don't want full size. Thank god somebody decided to do this. Fuck you Vortex and fuck you every other company that makes it so hard to change switches. Don't know what all these other assholes are doing making it difficult to change their keyboards.
>>
>>60135369
now it's pretty easy to get something good and affordable as long as you don't have too esoteric requirements so once you more or less have an endgame keyboard there's not much of a point to stick around and admire other people's keyboards

It actually isn't as good as I thought since you still have the problem of rgb compatible cherry mx green switches...not fucking existing. AKA the plastic housing needs to be translucent for light shine through. At least I was able to figure this shit out on my own. Not like anyone else here seems to know anything about this stuff. Guess all the hipsters really are gone and all we have left are the /pol/ memesters.

I peeked at my backlit WASD keyboard and it looks like the LED is mounted above the switch so its mx greens don't need to be clear but GMMK's look like their LED's are below the switch so I'm betting your SOL most likely.

Suicides and murder would happen whether you allow guns or not. Criminals are not particular about the law and someone about to off themselves isn't going to care about criminal consequences.

The negligence vs self defense stat does demonstrate too many people handle firearms in ignorance and that there's a strong need for proper instruction.

Yes actually. The black gun parts create some poor contrast with the black keyboard, especially where they're right under the edges of the keyboard, but that's not nearly as much of a problem as blocking the keyboard entirely.

If guns make people kill themselves, why do European countries with low gun ownership have suicide rates up to twice as high as the US'?

Comparing to the Cherry tactile greys that are on the same board as my 65g Zealios, I have never noticed any "sluggishness". If you're describing Gat browns as favourable in comparison to Zealios, it just sounds like you like a lighter switch with less resistance.

I like all kinds of switches, though in terms of linears, gateron clears are my favorite. I have a board with gat browns here too and I'd say they feel pretty similar to actual ergoclears as you'd get in a premade switch. In terms of tactiles, I prefer heavy tactile switches (the board with gat browns isn't for me), and in terms of zealios and cherry tactile grey, I see that comparing the two you wouldn't find zealios to be very sluggish, cherry tactile grays have even more of a "slow" and subtle tactile bump than zealios (feels almost like heavier cherry browns), but comparing zealios to ergo clears (cherry clears with a 45g spring), I'd say that ergo clears definitely have a more pronounced tactile bump than zealios.

>>60143256
the price could be justified if they're really better but i'm not entirely convinced. he's a guy with relatively little experience compared to the big companies like cherry and gateron and he just comes along and makes a supposedly better design? gold-plated springs and such seems like a meme. at best it would come down to personal preference probably.

Protip: Logic wasn't even invented by the english, it already existed BEFORE the english, so your argument is invalid, in addition to being completely unrelated to the discussion.
Suicide is the only option for you.
>>
>>60144489
The "better design" is mostly just a merging of the two perceived benefits of gat and cherry clears - smoothness and a larger tactile bump than browns - plus the idea behind ergo clears, which is that normal clears are too heavy. He's not exactly making enormous innovations, just putting established concepts together.

The gold plating and transparent housing offer only a visual benefit and I recall him saying as such.

I don't really like defending Zealios, as they're far from perfect. The hate on them here (from at least some people) seems excessive and/or bizarre to me, though.

>>
>>60146566
Yeh, I still need to program it to make the backlight dimmable and all of that stuff. I found out the other day that I have more time for this than I thought, so I'll probably design a case and have it laser-cut. Aluminum is a pretty tempting option, but I have a feeling it could get rather expensive, and I'd rather not use aluminum on a build that doesn't even have a backplate. Probably going to be either wood or acrylic.

>>
>>60149532
Whats bad of abs? Pardon my ignorance but im new in the mech scene
>>
>>60149720
ABS is the cheaper, smooth plastic. It will eventually develop a shiny look as it gets worn, and it's harder to clean or dye due to melting at a lower temperature. PBT is stiffer, usually has a nicer texture, and is easier to dye.

ABS does have some advantages, though:

- It's basically the only choice if you want proper backlighting, since it's easier to make it translucent

- It's easier to make doubleshot caps with, which opens up more color combinations (see >>60142861 for example, even though it's overpriced shit)

- It's cheaper than PBT (with some exceptions, like the overpriced reddit-designedâ„¢ set linked earlier)
>>
>>60149720
Also, don't be afraid to check basic sources like wikipedia for stuff like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keycap has a couple sentences about ABS and PBT

How do mx clears compare to browns force-wise? I know they are heavier etc., but that doesn't tell me much. My friend likes the "gamer" aesthetic. How do I get better friends with good taste?
>>
>>60150606
Well, I bought a Mac Blackwidow on sale back in 2013 and for what it's worth the whole thing feels cheap in general. The caps went glossy super fast, the body is cheapo plastic, and one of the spacebar stabilizers broke off as if it were made of wet toilet paper.
Like I said - it was cheap. Got it on a sale for 70 dollars which was pretty much 60% off or more because >mac keyboard, and since my brother-in-law backed off from getting me a good board from the states and it used actual Cherry switches I went "fuck it" and bought it.
I don't regret it one hundred percent, but I do wish I had been more patient and spent my money on a Filco or Ducky board.
Also the aesthetics are shit. I'd definitely mod the case and buy some new caps if it didn't have some non-standard keys but fuck me I can't be arsed to do it.

Sorry to hear that, but you may want to wait a bit before paying a scalper several bucks per switch. There are plenty of people in /mkg/ who aren't from the US who may have other advice, and I'd be surprised if you couldn't find some good switches for about $1 each no matter where you are. Maybe at least wait until this thread dies to see if someone else has advice.

Ducky One with PBT keycaps
>>
>>60151021
Dunno if I'd call the guy a scalper to be honest, everything is five times more expensive over here. And if you do the math, I would be paying somewhere around four bucks for each individual switch in the end after all either way.
Either way, I will keep an eye out for any possible offerings, thanks again senpai.
>>
>>60150783
You said TKL, but if you're willing to have a numpad you could consider a unicomp model M. They always have PBT caps, buckling springs are basically the superior blues, and they cost under $84 so you'd be under budget.
>>
>>60151087
After all, it's either that or paying 90 bucks for an Adesso MKB-125 board and gutting it for keys, or outright using it.
I mean, it's a cute keyboard and all, but >muh macro keys
>>
Thoughts on this keyboard?

I use this at my job and it hefty and clicky, I like it. Pretty cheap too though too bad it's not backlit.

Definitely my favorite non-mechanical keyboard.

REEEEEEEEEE so i thought i could save some money by buying the $40 memeforce 68 on amazon and replacing the switches with Cherry brown switches i had leftover from a previous desoldering project.
i turned on the soldering iron too hot and the metal ring strip on one of the terminal came off. can i reroute this with a wire??
>>
>>60151419
I think a BEEG blob of solder might do the trick there.
>>
>>60151459
i tried that several times. solder just won't stick to the pcb
>>
>>60151470
Then yeah, if you gently strip some of the red stuff you can easily bridge it, or reroute it with a thin wire if you can't be arsed.
Super fixable, though.

Just got the K70 Lux RGB, enjoying the shit out of it. No problems at all, the typing is top and the build quality is amazing, this just shows that you retards will despise everything that's "popular". You are worse than every redditor ever sitting foot on this planet, behaving like teenagers that are angry about their mothers Xmas purchase.

Stay mad fags, and to the people who want to buy a K70, go for it and don't listen to this memeing bunch of angry shitters.
>>
Do stiffer switches reset quickly? As in they pop right back up to their normal position after you press on them
>>
>>60152169
yes stiffer spring literally provides higher upward force (higher rate of change of velocity)
>>
>>60152160
how is he still not in jail?
>>
>>60152169
This is exactly why I prefer stiffer switches. MX blacks are nice for this, but it's actually something that buckling springs are great for too, since, unlike MX switches, they don't have any tactile bump to slow down their upward movement.
>>
>>60152408
>something that buckling springs are great for too

Also the only switch that exists where the actuation and tactile/click occurs at the exact same instant.
>>

want to buy a pok3r. shits hard to find in australia.
i found one with nature whites for a good price.
are nature whites good?
i like browns and they are apparently like reds with a brown spring?

Its the one good idea cherry had in the last 20 years. They realized that the tactile bump in browns was shit, so they got rid of it.

What's the non click version of greens? I love the way they feel but would like it a bit less noisy.

you mean dyeing? i suggest getting blank NPKC white pbts from amazon and iDye poly bags of your choosing.
Dyeing is great but it works best when the keycaps are new and unused.

i think the cm masterkeys is one of the best full sized boards right now mainly because of its rgb lighting and reasonable price.

both the noise and wpm should improve soon. you're probably bottoming them out a lot and making excessive noise because of it. blues are actually a bit clunky compared to laptop scissor switches so you might type a bit slower but they're more ergonomic.

Yes, exactly.

I've never had a mechanical keyboard before. I've always thought the various membrane keyboard I have are fine but not great.

I'm considering getting a Fnatic keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches since they have the tactile feedback and they don't have that extra clicking sound. Is this switch good when I primarily will be typing things on that keyboard? Or is another switch generally better for typing?
>>
>>60155368
buckling springs lol

You will find "typing comfort" increases with typing proficiency. So before you get into modding switches and hunting for rare parts, try learning how to type fast first. Massive fucking faggots.
