My laptop runs ubuntu. Recently installed a second SSD. It's an M2. My battery life has dropped from 8 hours to 4 hours.

I've never encountered this large of a disparity so I'm guessing this is a configuration problem or something related to ubuntu. Any ideas to get my battery life back up or is my only option to just remove this second SSD?

no, a live iso usually installs with exactly the same configuration as the live system - so for example with a gnome desktop with gedit, firefox and Evolution mail.
What I want is just the base system up until the display server, and choose the rest, specifically I'd like to not have something like ABRT (automated bug reporting tool) in Fedora running in the background. Only what I choose.
But I'm a bit worried that if I have to choose everything myself I might miss something critical, that's why I'm asking

just tried a desktop screenshot thats 25M uncompressed. Took somewhere from half a second to a second, wheras png was almost instant.
Not really that big a deal. Makes not liking farbfeld as a personal preference more understandable, but the space savings are an understandable reason for someone to like it.

I pass all my pngs through optipng before storage. I just tested and did a png2ff | bzip2 to an optipng png I had saved. the ratio's exactly 0.956~ (ff/opng).

For my use case, the storage space I'd save by using FF is inconsequential, the difference is really TOO minimal to adopt a format that is largely unknown and that'd require me to convert it before using it almost anywhere, and that'd force me to use an imageviewer which supports it.

I also tested feeding the ff program both the optimized png and the uncompressed png, results are quite interesting (even the hashes match)

I'm thinking about getting a laptop and installing arch on it for school work. I only have experience with arch on my home PC and my school uses a server a lot for accessing files, where on windows you would go to network and see all the computers listed, etc. How easy is that to set up on linux, if possible? Would it be listed as a drive in lsblk that can be mounted? Also how easy is it to write and compile C# on arch?

I suppose it's a windows machine and that everything's running on AD/IIS
if that's the case, have a look at samba and how to configure it. samba provides "discovery" of network PCs, so it should work the way you expect a windows machine to work in that regard.
>>
>>60138071
It's definitely running windows server, I used it once as a class assignment for IT. How would that work from terminal? I almost never use a file manager like Nautilus and just do everything from command line, so could I mount the server like a drive and cd into a machine?

So, /fglt/. I've been using xubuntu for a while now, but I'm getting tired of Canonical and want to move in a different direction.

I hear lots of good stuff about Gentoo, installation process aside, and I'm thinking about using it. I like how open it seems and it I don't mind learning the ins and outs of the OS. I'm a hobbyist programmer and am comfortable with Unix conventions.

Will it remain tedious to use after I install, or will I generally be able to boot it and fuck around without having to edit config files all the time, like the memes tell me?

I use a nvidia card for light gaymen along with CUDA for tensorflow. The installation process was shitty enough on ubuntu. will I tear my hair out trying it with gentoo?

I plan on installing it on my t420 and trying it out for myself. Just looking for some thought before i dive right into it.

I am using Openbox and using Thunar as my graphical file manager. My distro is Void. thunar-volman doesn't seem to want to mount USB drives automatically. And the trash bin is missing. But if I switch to Xfce4, which is what I installed Void with, then USBs work fine and there is a trash bin. Everywhere I search people say gvfs is an issue, but gvfs is installed for sure. Some places also say that Thunar is starting before gvfs which might be an issue but I wouldn't know how to find that out. Does anyone know the true problem?

It can take a while to get it all configured the way you want, if you're picky, but afte rthat there's not much dicking around. If you don't give a shit, the defaults will generally get you a pretty usable system.

Should I just install Debian-Unstable?
>>
>>60138376
No, it's a buggy piece of dog shit
>>
>>60138242
Depends entirely on how autismo you want to be. I'd recommend just starting out with the defaults, then whenever you install a new package, read up on what the use flags do and decide if you want that or not. For most people, the defaults are pretty sensible. A few defaults are pretty easily removed under certain situations, like the nls flag, which enables support for various non-English languages (so if your OS is in English only, it's pretty useless).

I went full autismo to squeeze as much out of my 8 year old c2d as possible and started with USE="-*" (don't enable anything optional unless I explicitly ask for it for each individual package).

One thing to watch out for though, is there are a few programs that are incredibly bloated that you may not expect, and take absolutely forever to compile (there are prebuilt versions of those available though). For example, the chromium source code is over 500MB and takes like 10+ hours for my old machine to compile (meanwhile, Firefox is like 1 hour).

If you are familiar with basic programming, unix, or are just capable of basic troubleshooting, and are willing to learn a little, then yes. Not that you frequently need said knowledge, but if you do run into trouble, you will have to google it instead of clicking a "just fix everything for me" button.

It's also particularly nice for development because there are no separate -dev packages like in other distros, so if you need some library, you just install that lib and all the includes come with it. Plus, if you wanna mess with the source code of anything, you can just use the ebuild command to unpack the source code, make your changes, then continue installing as normal.

It's also nice because there's virtually nothing forced on you if you don't want it. Part of the reason I switched years ago is because pulseaudio kept giving me all kinds of problems and virtually every other distro forced it on you whether you wanted it or not. Same idea with systemd. With Gentoo, you always have a choice instead of "you'll take what we give you".

Does Qubes use systemd? Anyway, it does sound pretty interesting, but it is kind of pointless. If you just want to defend your system from getting compromised by the average russian hacker qubes will barely help. Barely any malware exists for gnu/linux, and common sense on literally any distro will keep you safe. If you're worried about the CIA/NSA specifically targeting you, there's basically nothing you can do. Qubes is already completely subverted by proprietary blobs and the hardware level backdoor Intel and AMD put in your CPU.

Let's ignore your disgusting directory structure for now and focus on the task at hand:
It depends on how programName.sh was written. It may need to be executed while it's in your current working directory or not.

If not, you just need to add /home/user/Programs/ProgramName/bin to your PATH.
If it needs it you may want to write a wrapper script that goes there and executes it.

First install gentoo
second install xorg, drivers and dwm ( window manager, very simle, you will get the idea, then you can change wm to i3 or I woud suggest more modern wayland WM - sway ( i3 clone for wayland).
>>
>>60137495
Just install manjaro openrc and you'll be fine
>>
>>60137495
