That's a really neat piece. I'm glad servicing it didn't turn out to be as much of a headache as I'd been led to believe they were.

TOO BIG FOR ME

>Although the 41mm size of the Heritage Ranger is modern, Tudor kept the little details that makes collectors love the original Ranger so much. Right from the beginning you'll notice how matte the overall appearance of the watch is. The case is brushed all over and the dial does not have any metallic surrounds on the markers – the luminous numbers and batons are printed right onto the dial, keeping the overall look much softer. The pear-shaped hands are another nod to the original Ranger and the red seconds hand with a paddle tip adds a little color without becoming overwhelming The domed crystal and dial are a subtle touch that gives some additional personality to the watch.

Thanks, agreed, the service went great Was pricy though at 500usd for an overhaul, new crown, and new crystal, though I figure a jeweler doubles the cost when they see OMEGA on the dial, and I took the easy way out of going to a jewelry store rather than finding a watchmaker directly.

I'm already pretty amazed with the level of fit and finish in this price range. I would love to ogle over a snowfrake or something like that up close to compare.

Also apparently the SARX watches are being discontinued, that's too bad because I really love mine.
>>
>>59948678
All mechanical watches are overpriced. You're talking about a $400 mechanical calculator. Movements are cheap and cases shouldn't cost that much to manufacture. Problem is there isn't a lot of competition. The closest Seiko has are Citizen and Orient, and the Japs seem to have agreed to pricing, and then Chinese shitters.

It's perfectly reasonable to expect good finishing at that price.
>>
>>59948794
Parts manufacture is one thing; design, craftsmanship, and quality control are major costs too.

Just imagine a little bolt. Costs next to nothing to produce right?
Now imagine a little bolt that has to go into a critical part of a rocket going to mars.
Suddenly you have to check every single dimension and test its integrity using all kinds of ultrasound equipment and particle testing and whatnot.
Suddenly that little bolt costs many times what it originally cost.

And that's without counting design cost and assembly, and testing of the assembly.

Just look at the Chinese: they can produce all kinds of parts as cheaply as you like, but their designs, QC, and assembly are generally shit, so you get shit watches.
>>
>>59948098

Yes but the lug to lug measurement shouldn't be more than 50cm and the watch should not be thicker than 10cm. There are enough good watches around 33mm-35mm for you not to need to go with a 40mm.
>>
>>59948622
If it's 10x better than my SARB to justify the 10x higher price then it would be unbelievably good.

Original listing. Oldest review from 21st November.

Meranom no doubt had this watch design in planning since last year. It's no secret they order parts from China. Whichever factory they went with decided to help themselves to the tooling that was already created to make the Vostok version and sell their own versions. What's humorous is that they managed to get their own shitty version out months faster, while Vostok was lagging behind collecting all their different parts orders and doing real mechanical watch assembly with timely QC.

Protip: Never trust chinks.

>As the price includes the physical watch plus brand perception, I'd say that Rolex is a much better deal than GS.

You are what's wrong with the modern mechanical watch industry. This kind of idiocy is exactly what incentivizes spending money on marketing to create "brand perception" instead of on the physical manufacturing quality and finishing of the watch.
>>
>>59948622
Yes. Grand Seikos have far more inspection, assembly, adjustment and finishing labour lavished on them than even Rolexes do. GS literally microscopically inspects every single component in the movement. They use a MEMS process to make hollow balance wheels to micrometer tolerances. They hand polish the mirrored surfaces to a perfect distortion free mirror.

If you look at a Grand Seiko and a Rolex under a 10x loupe, you will see that the GS is clearly better finished.

The manufacturer, movement type, country of origin, and water resistance are the four most crucial things to write on the watch both for the end user and the watchmaker/batterymonkey.

With these four things you already know 98% of how to use and service a watch.
>>
>>59951108
Definitely no.

The 6R15 that's so ubiquitous in the SARB series is assembled by machines for instance.

One of the cheaper hand-assembled movements by Seiko is in the MarineMaster, which goes for around 2000 bucks.

THIS
>>
>>59953376
Kinda.

A rubber gasket takes the shape of the little ridge in which it fits, and as time passes, and countless temperature variations slowly cook it, it ends up keeping this exact shape. At this point, reusing is obviously is a bad idea. Same thing applies to everything actually, just this weekend I replaced an old toilet bowl, and the old gasket on the waste side was just stuck in shape. Reusing it would have been a shitty idea.

Now that depends on how old the gasket is, if you're say adjusting your watch and regularly opening it, you can reuse the gasket, though you should give it a few hours to take back its shape before putting it back in. I myself always replace it, though I don't really open my watches every day, and gaskets are cheap enough, but I guess if I have to open a watch that hasn't been open in six months, I'd definitely replace the gasket.

Now, gaskets have changed, they're not the same they used to be. Gaskets from some 20 years ago would harden and become brittle with time, so much they'd break when you opened the case. Now, it seems modern gaskets remain rubbery for a longer time.

Still, a gasket costs like $5, and you shouldn't be opening your watch every month, so just replace it.

After my current programming project I wanna make a timegrapher program. As you can probably guess the biggest issue is that watches, with the exception of TICK TICK, are quiet and that run of the mill microphone/ integrated sound card combo make it impossible to pick up on the movement. Is there any software solution to this, or would the people using the program have to get better gear?

But thank you all the same.

tg is open source, why don't you contribute to that instead?

My biggest problem with tg is that it always measures the loudest spike, and sometimes this can lead to false beat error ratings. If you're going to make a timegrapher software from scratch or add to tg, whatever you choose make it so that the user can choose between the different spikes in the signal.

I went to a mall-tier watch store today and it was sad. How can people make and sell all that overpriced ugly dogshit? Huge watches with designs that are either bland or messy. Even if I could pick any watch for free I would have a hard time finding anything I would wear. All the decent low price watches are only sold in online shops. Stores just seem to stock dogshit.
>>
>>59955835
Not the stores fault. We have a shitton of good Casio, good but overpriced Swiss Roamer, overpriced Doxa and oversized, but all-steel, Seiko-insides Lorus. We barely sell any, but the dogshit, folded bracelet, fake-chrono, fake tachy, fake dive bezel Daniel Klein sells like hotcakes.

We'll never stock up on things like Seiko, Citizen or Orient, not even Bulova, Swatchshit or Zeppelin/Junkers as fucking NO ONE will buy them, ever!
>>
>>59954731

So I have a sinn. It was gaining time per day (within specifications). It fell off a table and now it loses time and runs short on power reserve. Not within warranty. Where can I go to fix this. I'm in Hamilton ON
>>
>>59956277
Shane Ede in Toronto.
>>
>>59956226
Those are just the watches that survived. The low-quality dogshit already died. But I do browse watches on the fleamarket, and even in the estate piles, most are entry-level Doxa, UMF, Pobeda, Swiss pin-pallet garbage and shit. I assume in the West it's mostly Timex and such.

>>59956235
Honestly no idea. Something just clicks in their brain, "wow, this looks like total fucking shit, I MUST have it"! When DK arrived there wasn't one watch in the batch that I liked which before that never happened (even in the Lorus batch there were a few nice things), but we sold like three in the first day.

Also I get a shitton of MK, Calvin Klein, Hilfiger, Levi's, Armani, Diesel, chinkshit and of course fake chinkshit of all aforementioned brands. It's usually middle-age to old people who bring Japanese, like Casio, Citizen and in lesser number Seiko. "New money" (more like "look dear, I got a promotion as head office bitch") wears Tissot, manchildren/mid-life crisis victims wear Orient and Zeppelin.

if you want a lifetime watch, get a watch with a time-tested movement with widely available parts and universal serviceability by any competent independent watchmaker. the omega coaxial movements are shiny pieces of tech but they are not what you will want to have in forty years as you try to keep your watch breathing.
>>
>>59958404
Put the other strap back. This look 100% numale.
>>
>>59958724
Thanks, I wanted one with hashes instead of roman numerals which look kind of ostentatious to me, but I can't complain for the price I guess. Barely anything decent-looking with sapphire under $250

Nice memesplorer.

Didn't yours used to be on a strapcode super engineer a while ago? Are those pretty much identical to the stock bracelet aside from the end links?

What are some dirt cheap watches (<30€)?
Need it for work. Bonus if dust resistant and as sturdy as possible.
Digital is good too.
>>
>>59958960

you want an f108wh
>>
>>59958959
You probably missed the above post—I'm looking for 35mm and under, and preferably quartz if possible (should be cheaper anyway)

first one you linked is too big, second one isn't dressy enough, third one is a mineral crystal

if you raise your budget a little bit you can get a g-shock 5600, which is significantly better (more so than the price difference)
>>
>>59958404
Change the croc back, that one is horrible reddit-tier.
>>
>>59958892

Nah, different anon. I like the stock bracelet, but I've been wearing perlon on everything I have basically.
>>
>>59958404

Do you know how the watchgecko perlons are? I want a eulit perlon, but holben's never has them in stock and gecko doesn't carry them anymore.
>>
>>59959028
this one? https://www.amazon.com/G-shock-DW5600E-1V-Black-Resin-Sport/dp/B000GAYQKY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1492551578&sr=8-4&keywords=g-shock+5600&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011

is it really 3-4x as good as the $13 f108wh?

I don't know any woman who would wear such a masculine design. Half the sellers call it a man's watch and it's the size of the old Cadet model Vostok.
>>
>>59959197
I appreciate your response but I'm looking for a dress(y) watch—they appear to offer very little in that regard

Spoken like a true pebian

>Why CEOs swear by Swatches
>According to Google auto-fill, one of the most searched terms relating to Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein is, “What watch does Lloyd Blankfein wear?"

>We have the answer: It’s a Swatch, a simple plastic timepiece that retails in the ballpark of $100. In fact, the executive has several of them—including a black one for formal events.

>The list of power players who sport Swatches goes on: Tony Blair has one, as does French president Francois Hollande. U.K. hedge fund trader Chris Hohn has had a black one for years. AllianceBernstein CEO Peter Kraus is a fan of the brand. Even the boss of luxury watch maker Patek Phillipe reportedly wears one while skiing.

I tried to look at the Swatch website to see what clear case watches they make, but I was immediately annoyed by their horrible, cumbersome, overanimated, bloated, slow, tablet optimized website.

Swatch is truly the purest form of plebcatching.

Not surprising, another Steinhart apologist who knows sweet fuck-all about watches that matter.

They're milsub hands, retard. Steinhard ocean ones are the ultimate in Rolex dick-riding, that's why no matter how well they're made, people will still laugh at you for owning one.
