>>
>>59828876
Well, the points were to change the topic in general and way away from Archie in particular. And mostly into watch designs. So let's look

>>59828898
OK, let os start with this and discuss all that is wrong with watch design

- numbers 1 - 11 (occasionally 12): we are adults, we know the face of a watch and do not need all that verbiage. Delete and replace with simple, clean and clear hour markers. Well lumed.

- verbiage: we are adults and recognized the logo and do not need Rolex spelled out. Move all that wall of text to the back

- colour scheme: yes that black on black with black in black is so cliche it should be gone. like yesterday. Try readability

- blackout probably means no lume. Anywhere. Which is bad. People who work perhaps do not go for Rolex but most of us need to check the time, also at night. I want red lume to maintain night vision and sleep pattern. Tritium is good too.

- people who work will also need date etc more than a stopwatch. I want YYYY-MM-DD with day and preferably also week number (used here in Europe for us salarimen.

- bezel: now that is ugly as sin, with again excessive text. A quick view at 12 o'clock would tell most numb-skulls we are talking about units per hour.

- complications: I do not need but I do want GMT with midnight at 6 o'clock and also a Moon Phase. Please.

Mate you're talking about perpetual or annual calendars watches which costs in the 10.000's and 1000's respectively unless you go quartz.

I do think that Frederique Constant offers a perpetual for 8000 so that's very good value. Still most people won't know what the duck you are wearing so that may or may not but important to you.

Neither had I until I found it. Got the photo off ebay. Seems to be going for about a hundred. Though that is from a watchmaker who cleaned it all up.

I think I have opened the caseback on a cheap watch, but I really don't want to try on my grandfathers. It seems to be working now.

Of course this a cheaper one. He also had Rolex my dad has. I know that you need to send into them to fix anything on. My dad had his fixed like that a while back.

Here are the simple facts: Nomos are literally the first new company to develop the capacity to design and manufacture mechanical movements including escapements on a series production basis since the 1960s. They join Vostok, Orient, Citizen, Seiko, ETA and Rolex as the only non haute horlogerie companies capable of this.

Developing this capability took a several year and ~12 million Euro investment in escapements and a further ~2 million Euro investment in designing the ultra-thin DUW 3001 calibre. These are enormous investments from a company with an annual sales volume of 10,000 - 20,000 units, and as a result must necessarily be reflected in increased unit prices.

In an affordable luxury watch market heavily dominated by Chinese-cased ETA-powered marketing-driven shitters, any watchmaker that makes the investments required to become a manufacture and actually increase the technical diversity of series produced mechanical movements should be applauded no matter whether you like the aesthetics of their product line. To the extent that Nomos succeeds by following this path, it may serve to encourage more investment in the technical aspects of watchmaking by other companies rather than just investing in more value engineering (i.e. cost-cutting) and more advertising.

Just in the last 10 years we have gone from a $1,000-$4,000 market where every single watch was powered by an ETA movement to one where you can now choose between ETA, Tudor, Nomos, and Seiko (8rXXs, 8LXXs). How can this development be regarded as bad for people interested in horology, regardless of whether you would personally buy any of those watches yourself? If only Miyota and Seiko would add micro-adjuster models to their ebauche offerings and Tudor would begin to use their in-house movement in more models, we could return to an era of real competition in movements in production watches not seen since the glory days of the 1970s.

In that price range I'd say you're looking at the turtles as an all around great package (amazing lume, good overall looks and finish for price, tough, ISO certified and individually tested.) When you look at most microbrands I feel like they're generally going to be struggling to just hit that same mark for the price, and they'll always have worse lume.

In my view, if you're looking at all these microbrand divers with significantly worse lume than a budget Seiko, often not certified, other niggling details, you toss those out the window. A lot of those watches are basically strictly worse, unless you find something really nice.

But how might you expand to something "different" without a direct downgrade? Look around at the different technologies that are used by microdivers but not by seiko. consider the tritium vial microdivers and compare that to the Seiko. The tritium vial wont glow as bright as lumibrite when the lumibrite is at its brightest, but tritium vials glow at, basically, a constant brightness for years. You're in a dark room for 12 hours? That's kind of a problem for typical lume, but not tritium tubes.

This guy wants to sell some tritium vial microdiver for 280
http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/deep-blue-daynight-t-100-ops-flat-tritium-tubes-green-dial-worn-once-like-new-4220890.html

So this typical lume vs tritium may give you some options to explore before making a final decision.

>>59832657
You're going to have to advance the date on the first of the month 5 times a year.
>>
>>59832761
No one said setting the time specifically, literally just said "set it."

In reality, you're going to set the time on that watch as often as you feel you need to. For instance, if you're okay with it being +-2 minutes at most, if may be a while before you set it. If you want it to be +-5 seconds from perfect time you may set it every couple weeks or something.
>>
>>59832708
Don't buy that particular watch though, he probably bought it for $200 in the 40% off sale around christmas, which is essentially the only time to buy Deep Blue. Also anything with C3 lume is going to be pretty comparable to seiko's offerings, avoid BGW9 and C1 though, they're pretty much shit in comparison. ISO certification is nice but if you aren't actually diving it's pretty much marketing fluff.
>>
>>59832421
Well, how about about you give a better option instead of getting all triggered and shit? If you think of it, the intent of my post was actually trying to get something else than a Seiko.

Also by the late 70's digital watches became so reliable that they're still working good today. I have an LC Roamer from 1978 that works perfectly and keeps good time. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Russians used some military-grade quality for the electronics just to make sure it works.

I have two seiko watches, one with a 4r36 and one with a 6R15 and they both take an hour to change the date.

They will start to engage the date wheel at 11pm and it will move half way, then they will flip over at midnight.

This is just something that watches do and you'll have to deal with it.

Unless you buy a Grand Seiko Quartz that changes the date in a milisecond.

I saw Archie Luxury at a Rolex boutique in Brisbain yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now phuker?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “SHITERRR” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen watches in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the watches and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any magnetic infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each watch and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Vintage Seikos with the 5206/5245/5246 mechanism have both quick-set for day and date as well as instant flip over of day and date at midnight, but at the cost of not being able to use the quickset between 9pm and 3am on pain of dealing the mechanism.

So many people were breaking theirs in the 1970s that in the revised 5216/5256 Seiko removed the instant changeover for mechanical protection from being broken by being set at the wrong time.

Help me out /g/, I'm a total watch noob. I got a few simple ones like MVMT, Triwa and Fossil, but nothing special really. I was looking into the Vostok meme watches, and they seem pretty cool for how expensive they are. What should I look out for when buying these watches?
>>
>>59828194
I have to ask whats that shit in the side of his head
>>
>>59841782
Do you know what a mechanical watch is? If not, look it up.
Vostoks aren't great. They're a novelty, with the russian/soviet iconography and styling, but quality-wise you shouldn't expect much. Movements fail more often than a cheap Japanese mechanical, and accuracy is mediocre at best.
But I like them myself.
>>
Step number 1 should be to develop an understanding for the differences between quartz, mechanical, and automatic.

How's the accuracy on that Explorer II? The Explorer I is a really nice design, if I wasn't almost autistically drawn to simple baton indices that'd be the other Rolex I would buy. As it stands I'm planning on getting a 16200 with a blue dial at some point.

No but if you pay $500 extra dollars you can get the handwinding and hacking DLC.
>>

How would you destroy it working?

Ok
>>

Well the usual things, hitting it hard to something, scratching etc but I also work with inks (solvents and stuff) and I'm a bit afraid of that getting on the watch.
This steinhart I can handle but something five times more valuable.. I don't know.

Most of the analog watches itt are way too big desu. You run the risk of looking like a used car salesman, or an eastern european wiseguy.

If you work with solvents I wouldn't wear any watch worth more than $50. Could eat through the gaskets and work their way inside and damage the watch. Need something disposable for work.

Rubber gaskets are more chemical resistant than your skin.

Rubber doesn't need to replace itself if it's not burned in the first place.

I find it really corny when watch companies put shit like "Seamaster" or "AirKing" on their watches

I highly doubt their useless trinket will actually help if you were at the wrong end of the raw power of nature battling 50ft waves or in a middle of a typhoon.

my calipers tell me my wrist is 59-60 cm, thats about 2.2 inches.
