I'll just try my luck again. Pls no bully.

Are xiaomis known to kill sim cards? Why does this happen in the first place? Never had a sim die before. Google doesn't find anything useful about this.

So I said fuck it, and bought the Google Pixel XL 128GB. They said it was on a 5-6 week back order, but then it just showed up at my doorstep in 4 fucking days. I was hoping I had time for buyers remorse to sink in, and cancel the order, but guess not.
Anyway, its the best fucking phone I ever used.

Installed PureNexus on my old Nexus 5, fucking blazing fucking fast. Maybe even slightly faster than the Pixel in response times. Pixel does blow it out of the water app performance wise tho.

Back to the Pixel. Few complaints. The Google branded case is silicony, and attracts a LOT of dirt, and loose fibers. Cant seem to find a better case.
USB Type C is THICC and doesn't curve well.
Not a single screen protects fits well. The glass on this phone is SLIGHTLY curved at the edge, and since no one bothers making a soft malleable screen protector anymore, the glass ones cant come to the edge. I tried the ZAGG one, and Verizon's brand of screen protectors and they are actually SMALLER than the fucking LCD screen. Spent 20 minutes fiddling with one, and it just wont cover the entire display. Fucking retarded.
AliExpress screen protectors just copy the dimension, and have the same fucking problem.
Cant seem to get more than 5 icons in a row, even if I lower all the font, and display size to small, it shows that more icons will fit, but no new grids show up.
Stupid inconstant 7.1 icons all over the place

Fingerprint sensor is amazing, I cant believe I ever talked shit on the concept. I can unlock the phone with one hand and go back exactly where I left off. Its very accurate, and you can add multiple fingers from each hand.
My Anker car charger that never charged my Nexus fast, charges the Pixel fast.

Night light mode in 7.1 is awesome.
Wallpapers are pretty good, but wish they had better resolutions for each screen

Is there a nice ROM for the Pixel XL I can slap on? I really like the custom ROM features.
>>
Anyone ever successfully compile AOSP for your phone? How the fuck did you do it? I always end up solving different errors until I get something that can't be googled.

Should I go for it? My absolute max. limit is 100€ I can spend on a phone. It even has warranty left for few months. The cover for the charging port is only missing, I wonder if I could get that fixed while at it.

Just interested in whether this is the ultimate best bucks deal for a consumer.
I'm super duper poorfag so 90€ for S5 seems pretty good deal after doing some research. In my country second hand variety is pretty bad for other products that aren't iphones and lumias and I want none of those OS phones.
>>
>>59647770
Any decent custom Android versions for a Galaxy s5 or should I stick with Lineage OS? Also does anyone know what kind of battery case I should get? I'm going to be taking a trip through streetshitterland (South Asia) in a few months. I can't imagine that I'll have access to a working electrical outlet more often than every 3-4 days.

>>59647864
Literally why? You can't root it or install a custom OS and it's 100% proprietary. Just get an iShit, you fag.

>>59647965
>buying cheap Chinese phones
You get what you pay for. It's 1000 times better to buy a few years old flagship than a brand new chinkfone.

>>59648187
Definitely go for it. I have one and it's great. It's the first phone I've had that has an SD slot and it's the most amazing feature. I store the OS and a few apps on the internal 16GB flash and everything else on a 128GB micro SD card. I'll never buy another phone without this.

>>59648313
Yes. The modem has poor isolation from other hardware like mics and cameras and runs closed source baseband software. I think it's safe to assume that any smartphone can easily be used to spy on you. This is why I remove my battery when I don't need the phone.

>>59648448
topkek

>>59648538
OnePlus. You get better hardware for less, but get the Pixel if you want software support a decade from now.

If I use an alternative launcher like Nova Launcher, does it take up more resources than if I had just used the stock launcher? Asking since my GS4 is shitting the bed to the point where I have to turn off nearly all my rice.
>>
>>59649221
Is this still true though? A few years ago, budget phones were truly shit and also everything had a removable battery so you never had to worry about degradation over time.

Now you have budget phones that are 90% as good as flagships for under $200 new, with better batteries, more efficient processors, and all they're missing are stat-sheet features that nobody actually cares about.
>>
>>59649673
Nah, I have nova prime on my shitty blu phone and it works better than the stock launcher
>>
>>59649680
No, buying something with quick charge capability is reason enough for me to buy a midget/midrange device over a flagship from 2015
>>
>>59649673
According to my phone's self-reported memory usage, Nova Launcher uses 16 MB of RAM on average (over the past day). Clover uses 27 MB. It's nothing.

Granted, I use a single home screen and only one widget.
>>
I'm genuinely tempted by the Redmi Note 4X, but I'm apprehensive about the size.

Currently rocking a BB Q10, but the keyboard has gone to shit and I'm plagued by random reboots. BBOS takes fucking ages to restart, and this phone has served me well.

Will moving to a big phone be too jarring for me, usability-wise? I'm also concerned about fitting in jeans pockets. I don't wear skinny jeans but I'm not rocking fireman/rave pants either.

My one concern with the Honor 6X is that it does not have gorilla glass. The screen scratches very easily. If you're super careful and always use a screen protector, probably fine.

Alright. Looking into the Honor 6x right now and it seems nice. Now I just need to figure out which plan I want. It's [CURRENT YEAR]+2 and It seems like most carriers cover even my nowhere corner of the rural Midwest with LTE so it looks like that won't be an issue. I'd like unlimited data but 10gb or more that gets throttled afterwards is fine too.

Android is almost 100% proprietary these days, any Nexus or Pixel is nothing more than a whole bunch of closed source binaries so your "custom OS" is basically just reskinned Android running the exact same closed source binaries.

Is there such a thing as a budget smartphone with great, above average battery life?
I don't need it to be fast or run games, I just want it for web browsing, emails and of course calls. I am most interested in good battery life but I don't know if that's possible without spending a gorillion dollars.

I guess I am learning that, but old flagships still cost more than what I can, or rather want to, afford. So I tried a budget variant since the specs and ratings looked good for the price. The only real problem I found in the ratings was some connectivity issue that was always solved after a reboot.

This.

Aside from a handful of proprietary bits for the hardware, Android is largely open. The few things that are proprietary on some phones often have their firmware re-written by the ROM development community anyway. The only phones where this is a difficulty are the occasional HTC phone, but even those aren't much of an issue if it's a popular enough phone to draw the talented devs.
>>
>>59654679
Uhhh no?

>>59654704
Yes I realize, but you do realize you can exercise some constraint as well? Use your laptop for banking or actually go to the bank, my point is if you want what you want for the price you want, you're going to have to sacrifice something, if that means that you might be sending data to Beijing, then that's what you might have to put up with for the screen size, SoC, camera, and price that you want

You can't have your cake and eat it too, mate

Alright it's time for a new phone and I can't decide what to get.

>Android
>T-Mobile
>5.2 inches max
>needs NFC
>FM radio optional

I was thinking about either a sony or a motorola.
>>
>>59657743
I don't think any Sony has Band 12.
>>
does the redmi note 4 really have a lipo battery?
arent these really shitty compared to li ion?

HTC one M8 or LG G4? Or spend a bit more and get the OnePlus 3T? I only really use my phone for music and occasionally memes.

Also, what's the consensus on buying brand new of ebay?
>>
>>59656779
Yes for the 625 and quick charge alone its worth it
>>
>>59657720
If you have the ZE551ML, yes check XDA
I had one that was running CM12.1, and I believe there's Lineage support for it as well

Just realised that the OnePlus 3T and HTC use a nano sim and I currently have a micro and I don't want to change. So looks like it's decided, unless you guys know any good competitors to the G4.

Is mate 8 a good phone if you don't give a fuck about playing games?

I liked mate 9 but it's too expensive. Also is 4k a gimmick?
>>
>>59657953
I thought that was just a meme? No reviews seem to talk about it. Should I risk cutting down my sim to nanosim sized?
>>
>>59657937
Just ask your provider to send you a new sim card. Don't choose inferior based on the sim card.
>>
>>59658093
Of course they don't mentioned. The reviews were done before the problem was widespread. Just read >>59657385 and think again whether you want a LG phone

Also you should be able to go to your carrier's store and have them give you a new sim, it's often free of charge.
>>
>>59658079
2K is a gimmick, 4K is a bigger gimmick. Mate 8 is great phone if you like massive phones.

Woah damn, thanks. Might go for the OnePlus 3T then, but I'll think on it for a while. Defo won't go with LG.

Gonna have to recommend the Nokia 5. Moto g5 is a good choice too.

Nokia is the better build, better looking, Fingerprint scanner, and promise of better support with a clean android build.
>>
>>59658350
original I guess?
I was wondering if huawei actually makes good phones, everyone that has a p8 lite told me they haven't had any problems with it.
>>59658373
I'm gonna stay clear of nokia for a while but thanks for the recommendations mate
>>

I saw them going for 350 on eBay recently

Don't get the original P8 Lite, it's old tech. The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is a huge improvement over it. It is also sold as Huawei P9 Lite (2017), Huawei Honor 8 Lite, Huawei Nova Lite or Huawei GR3 (2017) depending where you live. I know, it's fucking ridiculous.
>>
>>59658237
Thanks, I'll try it later

Does anyone know if the Nokia 3/5/6 will work on Verizon? Not being listed on the frequency sites and I don't really know what I'm looking for otherwise. Just want to know if I should even be looking at it while I'm shopping around for a new phone.
>>
>>59658173
Does it matter if it's 32 gb or 64 gb? The 64 gb has 4 gb ram while 32 gb has 3 gb.

The T500 actually replaced a Toshiba Tecra 8200 from 2001 or something (dad bought it and I used it through high school). I didn't know their later stuff lasted that long though.

The pone feel is so bad, because I know how much money I waste on this and I normally hate wasting money, but I keep doing it. Since 2011, I have had:

>Blackberry 9300 (technically bought in August 2010 but kept it till November 2011, gave it to my mom to replace her ancient Sony-Ericsson dumbphone)
>iPhone 4, liked the phone but not so much iOS, sold August 2012
>HTC One X, fucking hated it, sold June 2013, almost went back to iOS after this
>Samsung Galaxy S4, sold May 2014
>Nexus 5, started the famed LG Bootloop™ after 10 months, replaced under warranty, immediately sold unused replacement
>Back to Samsung, Galaxy Note 4, 2big4me, sold December 2015
>Sony Xperia Z3 compact, first phone I have ever genuinely liked, great battery, camera, waterproof etc, this one may be a keeper
>December 2016, Xperia X compact has been out for a bit, decide "what the hell" and buy it
>Had the Z3C exactly 360 days, not even a year, absolutely nothing wrong with it but still replaced it, just because I was slightly bored and thought it was ancient since I had not kept a phone so long since my old Blackberry

The last one really hurt because I did not sell my Z3C, so the cash outflow was really felt, but aside from the iPhone I have lost at least 30% of the original purchase price on each phone.

I have a redmi 4 prime and it gets better with every month. At first the mp3 jack didn't work. Now it works just fine. GPS used to be malfunctioning when riding a bike, now it works with no problems.
>>
So I know fuck all about cell/smartphones, my grandparents set me up with an iphone 4 and a plan, I'm from Canada and will be going with the same plan with Rogers (I need to figure out what they got, I assume its unlimited calling and texting)
Should I get an unlocked phone? I don't mind spending 400-500 bucks, the whole pay 50 bucks per month for 2 years seems iffy as fuck to me
I like to use spotify alot also, and I could care less about mobile games and having internet on the go, I use spotify and discord mostly and prefer to use the internet only at home or at work

What are things that the new purchaser of a cellphone should look for or keep in mind?

How to gauge the benefits of a line package? What is meant by a device purchase being required for a free phone?

regards,
had a nokia cellphone until it was lost at sea a decade a go and now researching plans and cellphone offers/ cellphones

if you plan on getting a chink phone, look at what bands are supported and what bands are in your country to see if you even get coverage.

Should have bought the Acer Liquid Zest

>8 GB internal storage, 4 GB available, plus SD card expansion
>Preinstalled apps can be removed
>Basically stock Android already at Marshmallow

Not bad for a sub-$100 throwaway

should I worry about which phones have greater transmission strength?

It's hard to know that without testing yourself.
Pretty sure that in 2017 all phones >$100 are pretty similar in that aspect anyway.

How do you activate new phones when you get them in the mail? I only ever buy phones in store and they activate them on the spot, but decided to pre-order on Sprint's website.
