firefox still has ALSA support, just ships with Pulseaudio by default. just compile it yourself with the pulse option disabled and ALSA enabled to use ALSA.

Does anyone know any good adapters that I can buy that will work out of the box for LInux? My current adapter (TL-wn823n) doesn't seem to work and even when I manually install drivers it still doesn't work. So does anyone know any out of the box working adapters? I'm on Arch Linux btw, thanks.

You have full support from official tp-link webpage, here is the source (to compile):

I've tried on 4 seperate occasions to install Ubuntu & it's flavors to work w/ different versions, and either the installer fails, I get locked out, the partition gets corrupted, etc.

Is there a beginner-friendly GNU/Linux distro that I can still dual-boot with Windows 7 on the same SSD? I'm looking at Debian but don't know too much.

pretty hard to say with just this information, does it always finish once the initial 1:30 is up? might just be some service not closing responsively, maybe a dead network mount?
if it never finished and the time just keeps extending, that might be that something is waiting on IO, IO lockups are the worst
>>
Who here actually uses those more obscure, independent (as the babbies first linux page states) distros like Guix/Nix/Crux/etc.?

I'm not stating that in a hostile way, I'm genuinely curious. Legitimately distinct distros are more interesting than another "we took Ubuntu and changed the DE" fork.
>>
>>59642070
go on ebay or amazon or your local store and buy a used atheros wifi card for $5.

atheros cards in the 9000 series don't use proprietary software so you can use it without compiling/downloading/installing anything.

If you have a chromebook laying around, they usually have free wifi cards.

It shuts down once the timer runs out.
Other people have suggesting configuring the time limit in systemd to be 10 seconds since the problem is so random.
>>
>>59642774
you can lower the timeout, but keep in mind that that isn't a fix, but a workaround, and gives less time for functional things to finish up (you might end up force-killing things that otherwise wouldn't have taken much longer, simply because 10 seconds wasn't enough grace time)

Hey guys, I can't find any good discussion on linux graphics.

What are the main differences between the major DEs, such as Enlightenment, Cinnamon, LXDE, MATE, xfce? Additionally, what would be the arguments for and against installing just a WM with no DE?

If you don't feel like typing out an argument here, I would still much appreciate any links to pages or articles talking about this. A lot of what I found myself was either extremely superficial, or was just a circlejerk instead of a good comparison.

I see that I am quite ignorant, please enlighten me

While we're at it, I've also seen people talk about bars/taskbars.

What exactly are those? Coming from a long-time Windows user, I presume it would be naive to assume the bar corresponds exactly to the windows taskbar (or does it?).
>>
>>59645428
Quit being so autistic.
It's just easier to refer to "using a DE" when you have downloaded a full suite of DE utils including WM and everything else, and "using a WM" when you have only downloaded a WM separately and manulally selected all the other tools
>>
>>59645482
Many DEs have their standard panel, it's basically the bottom panel. It's somewhat synonymous to taskbars. KDE has KDE panel, Cinnamon has Cinnamon panel etc. There are independent panels too. The "WM users" use independent panels because WMs don't provide you with panels. Such as you can use i3 with tint2 panel

Pros
- Complete desktop ecosystem, KDE has it all
- Feature rich
- Customizable, and can be made to look very nice according to your taste
- Dolphin, KWin, Kdevelop, KDenlive are very good software
- File pickers have thumbnails (install konqueror)

Cons
- KDE can be slow in many hardware
- Default Wayland session hasn't landed yet
- It has bugs, more than GNOME

Thing with Linux is, you can try and discover your own preferences

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59645596
wierd.

I ran out of ideas. Maybe under other DE/WM?
>>

if you're running GNOME, you're also running NetworkManager, which as I recall used dhclient in the background when I was on debian and still using GNOME
with GNOME you needn't concern yourself with low level stuff like that
it should all be installed and configured automatically
>>
>>59645694
Alright, that more or less matches my initial impression.

I'm gonna go ahead and try to fuck up my system on my own and then once that's done probably try out a DE to see how different it is.

Thanks for the advice and opinions!

When you,
emerge --ask --update --deep --newuse @world

after extracting the stage 3 tarball and chrooting in... are you recompiling everything that was in the stage 3 tarball with your compiler optimization flags (because the @world set includes the @system set)? For example... do you use gcc to recompile gcc? Does it replace itself?

No, only what requires recompilation due to changes in USE flags and dependencies of packages that require recompilation. If you want to recompile everything you need to
emerge -ae @world

>do you use gcc to recompile gcc?
yes, you compile the new version using the gcc from stage3

>Does it replace itself?
Only if the major and minor versions match I think - not sure though. If new gcc is installed alongside the old one you can use gcc-config to choose which version to use.
>>
>>59647464
>Could it feasibly do both?
yes it can do both... you might run into problems when you are trying to use a network that doesn't allow connections on ports other than 80/443, since you will want to use 443 for https traffic

vpn traffic can be on whatever you want but generally on 443 for compatibility. at work I can't use my normal (61194) port for VPN access so I set up iptables to forward 443 traffic to the correct 61194 port and connect to 443. obviously this prevents you from viewing the website over https from that IP

ls: cannot access `dir/filename`: Permission denied

I think your reading comprehension is what is at fault here.

Your post just says that X ships with sane defaults that can be edited. It does nothing to say that xorg.conf doesn't exist by default. The text in your post could just as easily mean that X automatically generates an xorg.conf with reasonable defaults.

>Guix
I use it. I've also used NixOS. (Sadly, flaming faggot general poster removed Guix from the general)

GuixSD is not entirely ready for production yet but Guix sure is, you can drop it in on Debian. It's completely fucking awesome and once you use it you'll wonder why the hell would you ever go back to regular shitty packagers.

- all apps installed in non root directory, this means you can have dozens of different versions and access them individually
- complete dependency graph that doesn't interfere with any other packages
- configure entire system with just one file, in Scheme
- type 'guix environment' and you have a virtual environment similar to virtualenv/docker so you can build an app or whatever you want in there and deploy it exactly as in on any other server
- rollbacks! if anything breaks you simply roll the system back it's 100% a functional package manager so uses a persistent data structure to keep all the information, there's no destroyed data

Has a million other benefits, I'll never use anything besides a functional pkg manager again.

As an example you edit one file, and in scheme you tell it exactly how you want everything laid out, which packages you want preinstalled, ect.

Then you reboot and presto there's your new system. If something went wrong, roll it back.
