I think you are right. Surprisingly it takes a bit of time to pump out a solid noise album (about a weekend). Although I got lazy at the end, a 45 minute album became a 25 minute album and there were more field recordings

IMO, FL tokens is what whatclones should be doing in the first place. They don't consolidate all snatches to a handful of torrents like staff picks do. Instead they for a much larger majority of releases that they'll get another potential seeder, affecting long term retention of torrents while also letting buffer flow to more people instead of a select few and the seedboxes that jump on them. It's healthy for the economy, and as long as they don't get overzealous and make it a regular thing but more of an unpredictable, vague guarantee of "someday", more torrents stay seeded, uploading is still very much encouraged as it increases the odds you have something someone wants to spend FL token on, and you get to snatch stuff as well without worrying about ratio watch. FL picks are obsolete.

This is music we're talking about. There's nothing critically time-sensitive about it, and file sizes are generally small compared to movies or even tv shows. In big swarms, waiting an extra minute - or even two! - for your 800mb FLAC isn't going to kill anyone; and in small swarms, you're usually just grateful to get the file. Speed is definitely nice, but it's generally in over-supply.

For the rest of it: Except for the uploader, limit the amount of ratio anyone's allowed to accumulate during the ... I dunno, first 24 hours something's on site to ... I dunno, 2x the torrents' size. Gives the uploader a slightly better chance of getting more than just the size of the torrent back in ratio, discourages seedbox racers from pump-and-dump schemes, allows other users a chance at ratio, somewhat limits the torrents to people who are actually interested in the content which hopefully means they'll actually seed it because they like it.

Similarly, anything that's put on freeleech, limit the amount of upload someone can get off it to ... I dunno, 4x the torrent size, which'll help share the wealth to people with slower connections. Anyone who was seeding the torrent when it went FL gets unlimited seeding, rewarding them for their long-term seeding.

Have some kind of targeted freeleech. Maybe occasionally hand out tokens to allow people to download items they might be interested in, which injects a little spare change into the economy and gets you away from everyone focusing on a specific handful of freeleech albums.

Have a seed bonus - no, not points just for seeding, it's too easy to game that system. But if you're the only seed on a torrent and a leech comes along, you get 2x the amount you actually upload to them; if you're one of two seeds you get 1.5x, and if you're one of three seeds you get 1.3x. Or maybe there's a capped upload multiplier: if you're the only seed, for every month you've seeded you get an extra 10% for any data you actually upload; if you're one of two seeds, you get an extra 5%, etc; all capped at 2x upload. Encourages long-term seeding.

Make it harder to get to PU+. There was so much gaming of that - grab some random ebooks or comics, grab random shit from bandcamp, or grab a random FLAC and do a quick conversion to mp3. Change it so that only music uploads count [is RED the one that still allows non-music uploads? on mobile, can't check], or only perfect FLAC counts, or only perfect FLAC with checksums, or you need more than five uploads. That encourages quality uploads and encourages people to treat the tracker with respect instead of a convenient, disposable stepping-stone.

Point is, there's a bunch of possibilities.

On the site-wide freeleech: it happened because they were trying to establish a big archive for the tracker, with seed redundancy built in, while injecting cash into the economy so there actually was an economy. They needed to do it to get the tracker started and viable. Did it work? Yes. Was it overdone? Maybe, but what's done is done. Will there be global freeleech again? Almost certainly. But hopefully it'll be for a limited time, maybe 2-3 days or a long weekend or something.

And I'm sure all this type of thing is stuff that's under discussion among the owners and upper staff.

I'm sure there are many more assholes who "fake" checksums but every cheater you catch is a few fake FLACs less on RED. A library like WCD isn't created in a few months, that takes years and a lot of reports.
