I think it's also because linear switches are marketed (rightly or wrongly) as 'gamer' switches, so a lot of people like to distance themselves from them and the associated stigma.

But yeah there are some good linear switches, people need to try nicely weighted vintage blacks before disregarding them entirely.

Why is that? I want more resistance from the keys when typing.

Then get heavier springs, o-rings just make bottoming out squishy and gross.

I'm hoping I won't bottom out with the o-rings installed. I need to type in several different languages for work so I don't have the choice in keyboards/switches qwerty offers.
>>
>>59281263
O-rings don't do anything if you don't bottom out. They just sit at the top of the keycap's stem and squish against the top housing if you bottom out.

Just got my first mechanical keyboard after some research.

Chose CM Storm Quickfire Rapid-i. They better have sorted out their LED problems with the previous batches.

I never got a chance to play with anything other than mx reds before I ordered this keyboard and I'm surprised by how tiny the actuation bump is on the browns.

I almost feel that getting a mechanical keyboard was a mistake (not really, but hear me out). You start taking it for granted right away and will be much more bothered by cheap membrane keyboards when you have to use them. It's kinde of the same thing with my macbooks retina screen, you take it for granted and stop noticing it pretty fast but you instantly notice when you're using a lower dpi screen.

Now to start collecting keycaps and digging out my soldering iron.
>>
>>59281285
I have both problems. I bottom out and obviously I feel like the key doesn't have enough resistance. My membrane keyboard required more force to register a key. I wanted to get clear switches but I had to settle for brown because of availability and price.
I hope it will improve something since I don't have any other options.
>>
>>59280924
Can anyone recommend a good 40% keycap set? Looking for something which has the characters for each layer, so it'd probably be dye sub to get all that info on

I think you'll struggle to find a set that shows all the layers etc..
Pic related has, I believe, custom printed caps made by WASD.
It's not difficult to learn your layers though, I have base + 3 on my MiniVan and have them pretty much memorised.
>>
>>59281757
Yeah your pic is exactly what I was thinking. Good suggestion checking WASD, I didn't even consider them for ordering a custom set.
I guess the next decision is whether to stay with the default layout or make a modified/custom one
>>

>>
>>59281899
Where in the EU are you? used G80-1800 might be cheaper than buying the springs in them.
>>
>>59281913
Nice. Thank you. What would be the maximum weight to get before feeling fatigue in the fingers for brown switches?

>>59281939
Belgium. Shipping from DE, FR and especially NL is cheap.
>>
>>59281982
Depends on the person. I have 72g ones in my ergoclears and have no fatigue at all while typing on them while I did with the stock 100g ones. Some people over on reddit love waving their dicks about using 150g or 180g springs in their daily driver boards without issue.
>>
>>59282021
I tried googling, but I couldn't find any info about apples wireless keyboard (magic keyboard 2). Do you know what it's actuation force is or where I can find out?

This suggests that the old models are 65g. I think the new model is stiffer though. No wonder it feels stiff compared to mx browns then.

That fully analog feature sounds really cool. Do games need to add support for it or can it's config software emulate analog joysticks/triggers?
>>
>>59282124
Definitely make your own if want ideal functionality dude, the configuration on TheVanKeyoards site is excellent.

Just follow the guide on thee, download the free bootloader software (Atmel I think it's called) and flash your created layers onto the keyboard. The GUI makes is practically foolproof.

Do you still have a tactile bump? any lubrication needed?
If I look at the explanation of the black and brown MX switches the only difference I see is the accentuation force and what they describe as linear and tactile bump. All this is because of the spring the used? So a black switch with a spring from a brown switch is essentially a brown switch?
How do I know I'll keep the tactile bump in my brown switches if I change springs?
Any in depth guides on this?

Man you know what I really want in a keyboard? A pressure sensitive key with a huge gaping deadzone. And it's Eurogarabge designed made in China with a $180 USD price tag? Even better.
>>
>>59282327
Linear/tactile/clicky is determined by the slider. Force is determined by the spring.

Check the animations here to see how different switches operate.

For some reason restoring an old yellowed out mech keyboard really intrigues me
Which ones do i look for?
Im not really planning on finding a model M but i think i can find something comfy
>>
>>59282327
I find with Ergo Clears (Clears with a lighter spring) the tactile bump is more noticeable, because there's less weight required to press the switch down, you have more sensitivity, if that makes sense?

I prefer heavy tactiles but Ergo Clears are great switches that can be made quite inexpensively. Cherry really should make their own OEM version.

Japanese as well. You type your stuff in romaji (normal letters) and an interpreter changes it to the likeliest kanji. E.g bokuhanihonnisundeiru goes to 僕は日本に住んでいる
I guess the input directly in kana comes from another time and somehow remained to this day as a legacy but I am not 100% sure.

I don't know much about Chinese input though. Do they type må mā ma(the accent like a v) mà just ma?

In the case of Japanese, the interpreter (at least the Linux one) shits itself on rare kanji (old one, rare pronunciation...) and I just copy paste from the internet.

The Japanese layout have keys to change the input type / change the style of kana or whatever.

In my original question, I was wondering if I should use an American layout (as it is the default in many situations) or if I should continue to use the Japanese one, and maybe remap those keys. If so, to what...

nvm looks like they'll fit
>>
>>59287348
Yes, the switch stems are pretty much the same across Cherry and all clones like Gateron, Kailh, etc. The only thing you should be worried about is the actual keyboard layout. Gateron keyboards should have standard layouts, so there's not much to be worried about, but stuff like Corsair keyboards have non-standard bottom rows, which makes it hard to find keys to fit the different sizes they use, or the TADA68, which is a board with Gaterons with a different layout that makes it a bit harder to find sets that completely fit everything.

The keycaps are worse then your steel series. Their barebones keyboards are actually good and good keycaps can be had for around 30 bucks. You could get something like a Ducky One with PBT keycaps for 109 bucks, or even just get new keycaps for your old keyboard, though the enter key will limit your options to whatever sets happen to match. Unless you absolutly need custom keycaps I'd pass on the ones offered by WASD

Why not man? Whats wrong with it?
>>
>>59288766
Bummer. Main reason I'm starting of thinking to buy a new one is that my space key is starting to get a little bit loose, I've probably slammed it on the right side way too much during these last six years. It gets stuck in a 45 degree angle sometimes. So it's not the keys (I really don't care too much that they're shining since they're black) but the stabilizer (I think it's called?). But if they're that shitty quality I'd probably just stick with my steelseries

But printing an image over the keys is really really tempting... Do any other companies offer custom prints, as in completely custom? I wanna have a BMO print lol
>>
>>59289235
max keyboard offers custom keycaps as well. Now the problem with custom printing is that it will always wear off eventually unless it is part of the mold
>>

Eventually yeah I guess. Has anyone discussed trying to put protective coating on the keys? Kinda like one would do on bike frames to protect the paintjob
>>

This is somewhat of a beginner's question: I recently bought a Magicforce 68 with Cherry MX Brown Switches, one of the backlit versions.

I am already thinking about keeping some brown replacement switches on hand, in case any of them ever break; I have a few questions regarding that:

The switches for the Magicforce 68 are what one would call plate-mounted, correct? If I buy replacement switches from here for example: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/cherry-mx-brown-keyswitch-mx1a-g1nn-tactile-bump.html can I simply install these by following the instructions I can find in various YouTube videos (soldering etc.), or do I need to take some special care regarding the LEDs?

I was thinking maybe I need a special version of the switch for LEDs, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
>>
>>59304531
All what the LEDs do is add two extra pins to the switch
>>
>>59304589
So I _do_ need a special switch that supports LEDs? Or can I just thread the pins through it myself somehow? Because I wasn't able to find any plate-mounted Cherry MX Brown switches that explicitly state that they support LEDs.

Oh fantastic, thanks for the info. Mine was made 09-Oct-93.

Was this a decent find? Or is this worthless? In the article you linked, it says a common issue was the capacitors failing. I feel like I've watched enough "LCD monitor repair" videos on YouTube to be comfortable replacing the capacitors if the kb doesn't work straight away.

I guess since it's missing that spring, then I have no change of successfully replacing that key? I don't think that's a big deal, is it?

Also, I suppose I need some kind of PS/2 adapter, any specific one recommend?
>>
>>59318754
My computer has a ps/2 port so I just plugged it in and it worked. Now keep in mind PS/2 is not hot swapable so you have to turn the computer off every time you want to plug the keyboard in. I think any ps/2 to usb adapter should work, if not an active adapter will work. Now you can get springs from Unicomp since they still make model Ms

I was thinking of buying either a Ducky One or a Motospeed CK104/Aukey KM-G3, the Ducky One I'm sure is way better quality wise but I've been wanting to get an RBG keyboard for a while. Does anyone have experience with either? I would replace the keycaps on both so they're irrelevant.
>>
>>59318853
I'm looking into adapters now, apparently most can be quite temperamental. I'll see if I can find a cheap one <$5 or so.
And I'll look into the springs. Do I just need one spring, or do I need a mechanism that clicks as well (in additional to the actual key that is).

I won't make an ergodox because that will be a big jump between types of keyboard I've used, but I might make an Atreus. The thing is, I will only use standard ISO keycaps. Would it look retarded if I designed my own tilted layout? I can't see myself getting used to pressing ctrl and shift down there.

>am I safe to just gently pry off the keys with a plastic prybar
no you should use at least a plastic keycap puller. wire puller is even better.
gently wriggling and prying may work for mx keycaps, but these m2 ones have long stems that really dig inside the barrels

why do people shit on browns so much?

I bought a testkit and I kind of like them the most. I don't like using a lot of force and prefer the slight tactility. I wish they were clicker though. Blues are nice but idk, it's harder to type the same key in rapid succession.

I like the clears but they remind me of my old alps black keyboard, my dell. Which gave me wrist pain from typing on it so much. I want something more low impact so it's either browns or blues, leaning towards browns.

Thoughts?

I'm looking for comfy linear switches. How are the gateron better?

probably, but whatever works for you bruh

I have no idea why you'd bother with ISO on a 40%. Especially considering nothing about 40% is "standard"

>>59322174
bcuz they shit

Gateron stem mold (left image) is smoother. Doesn't matter though, with use, Cherry stems become smooth as well
>>
So gateron but I'm new to mk and I've lurked quite alot. But what could I be better off to start with? Black, red? I want a silky smooth feels when typing
>>
>>59322355
not that smooth, also cherry switches are a lot more expensive.
>>59322081
you will get used to an ergodox. if not just change the firmware a bit.
>>
>>59322434
gateron clear is 35g actuation force so it is probably the lightest linear switch you can buy
>>
>>59322434
>I want a silky smooth feels when typing
that would be topres
>>
>>59322297
Didn't make myself clear, sorry. I'd have more keys because I need the Fs and some others (pgup, etc). It would be kind of a 75%
>>
>>59322465
that's nowhere near the most smooth. hall effect are more smooth.
>>
>>59322434
I'd say reds. I've used blues for a long time, and switching to Gateron reds is like typing on a cloud. It's smooth as fuck.
>>
>>59322514
Ok I will get some reds for starter and maybe with time I will try something else.
>>59322461
I'm quite a heavy typer so maybe the gateron clears might to sensible atm
>>

How is the quality of them? I need some nice, thick PBT caps

Ahh, I understand. I've seen some people do 60% Atreus builds. Seems to work out fine from what I can tell.

I got used to typing on my Atreus very quickly, but I still dont use it as much as my poker 3.
>>
My A key tends to bug out and either doesn't work when pressed and I would have to press it again for it to actually have an input, and sometimes it would double input A.

Would this be a board problem or the keyswitch itself?
>>
>>59322169
Okay good to know. I will more than likely attempt to make a removal tool when the time comes to clean it then.

How goes swapping the caps on these Filco boards? I've found a well priced Majestouch 2 on ebay I might pick up for work, but I read that Filco uses their own stabs for longer keys?

They use costar stabilizers and slides which you simply swap from the old caps to the new.

Aluminum casing?
From AE? Or TB?
How much you cop it for?
>>

Standard plastic case. Got it for $60 on Taobao.
Mostly just wanted to try Gateron browns and the layout, but so far I'm not sure if it's going to replace my other two boards. Would definitely recommend if you just want a single versatile keyboard though.

I see. Was planning to get that, too but I dunno. Thinking about the Varmilo VB87M for its Bluetooth functionality while maintaining arrowkeys.

So now that these new hall effect keyboards have shipped from assdrop what do people think of them? I have heard they are more scratchy than the original but it is exciting that they are being made again at all. Are they going to be sold in a store somewhere?
>>
>>59324325
Where can we get those pretty key caps?

The guy plans to keep working on the design and make further improvements, so if you wait another year they might not be scratchy anymore.
