I have a $25 chink one which is pretty great. It comes with a smooth coating that wears off pretty quickly, but it's still comfy even without it. The wood grains feel pretty nice, and I enjoy typing with it.

Have you ever tried a cloth one?
>>
>>59236295
I ask myself that question pretty often.

>>59236310
I've tried one of those rubber Grifiti ones which were decent, but too cheap. Cloth ones, like a towel, just feel kinda pointless. I like hard rests to make sure my wrists are leveled, and a soft one like cloth, while more comfortable, kinda defeats the purpose IMO.
>>
>>59236341
Grifiti wrist rests also tend to get grimy and flaky over time. They are nice for what they are I suppose.
>>
>>59236366
Yeah, I got rid of mine because the cloth was peeling off, the rubber was full of dents and it was getting dirty. Still pretty alright as a cheap wrist rest, but this wooden one was relatively cheap and feels a lot higher quality, and shouldn't have any of those issues on the Grifiti one.
>>
>>59236341
>>59236366
I have one of those pc gaming ones and it's comfortable and not too soft but it does get grimy and flaky and cleaning it is a pain. Just wondering if a wooden one is not uncomfortable due to being too hard.

Good afternoon /mkg/
>>

>Just wondering if a wooden one is not uncomfortable due to being too hard.
I don't find it uncomfortable personally, though as I said on that other post, I like them because they're hard which keeps my hands straight, which for me is the point of a wrist rest, not just being something soft. The surface is smooth and rounded, so no sharp edges or anything, just hard wood, and that's fine for me. My wrists are kinda fucked and it being hard doesn't bother me at all.
>>
>>59236221
i made some for my dox from birch plywood. It's easy enough, just make one yourself.
Alternatively just roll up a towel.

If I like these kind of keyboards, with the arrow keys tucked into the bottom right and the windows key what would I need to buy to get started and would I be forced to go ANSI over ISO?

I've looked at the TADA68 and the Red Scarf II ver c, are there any others?

I was thinking of installing either Cherry Clears or Tactile Greys.

yeah that exact one, i have it sitting in front of me. it is pretty nice. i just remembered i might actually have some caps for it.
>>
>>59239161
That's really quite nice, I'll probably get it since it's cheap enough that I won't regret it too much even if I don't like it. Now that I think about it I can also salvage some caps from an older keyboard, so it's settled.

Hey /g/ is there anyway to remap the keys on 2 of the same model numpads plugged into the same computer?

I had this crazy idea of using two of these side by side but tilted 90 degrees to the left. The left one would have all the left hands alphabet and the keys on the top of the numpad would be ctrl shift and alt and tab etc. On the right numpad the escape key would be space and the key above it would be enter. Remap the rest as I need.

This seemed like possibly a really cheap way to have an ortholinear keyboard and a split keyboard to test out if i like those features before I make or buy an ergodox or plank.

mx browns are still fairly loud to normies, you could make them as loud as your regular rubber-dome, but they'd still feel like shit. A realforce would be more suited for an office environment since it looks professional and sounds like a really nice rubber-dome, and also feels the part. Topre is very nice to type on.

>A lets split is probably cheaper. The pcb is like ten bucks.

I already have 2 of the cheap mech numpads from amazon that are like $15-$20, one for work one for home. The pcb is cheap but the switches and caps would easily make a let's split cost more. The keycool 22 key numpad I posted a picture of is $24 from mechanicalkeyboards.com.

Plus I have no real way to make a case for it. Also no experience building a keyboard though I am confident I could and plan to in the future.

I did some research it seems remapping individual boards is pretty simple for GNU/Linux which is my main OS. I am planning to bring my work numpad home tomorrow to test this out. I did also discover the numpad key sends no scancodes so that is an unusable key which is unfortunate.

I was wandering around Youtube and came across a video of a keyboard being used as a spectrum analyzer. As ricer as this is, the ten year old me would have loved this. for such a simple design you only need a router and four little boards.
for an ergodox case you would need a router and a routing template or access to a cnc router.
i don't think your contraption will be comparable to what an ergodox feels like, the ergodox and other diy boards are fully programmable through firmware, it has thumb clusters, the columns are displaced a bit to fit natural fingerlength better and it has way more keys.
Still sounds like a fun little experiment.
good luck.

They're barely tactile and feel like reds with dirt in the middle if you type with any kind of speed. If you want something that's actually tactile, get clears, greens or blues. Otherwise you might just as well get linear switches.

Go try out some other switches and you'll realize that they suck.
>>

I've tried clear and blue and I find brown to be a more delicate compromise between blue and black, but I see what you're saying. Green sounds ridiculous for typing on, is it even meant for that?

If I were to get a second quiet keyboard (I can't imagine why I would), I'd probably get clear. But brown is the choice I made in 2010 and I haven't found a switch better suited to my needs since, or I'd be using it. It's not an issue of money or pride

Blue and black for a few hours at friends houses, clear for a few minutes at a store, brown for seven years.

It's the old Vortex double-shot PBT set with translucent legends. They have a new one with some fixed things, like the symbols and numbers side by side instead of over each other. second time I've cleaned under the keys in six years of use
>>
>>59271158
have you looked under the keys? Mine was clean on the outside too
>>
Does anyone use the va68m with visual studio? I'm looking for a smaller board for work, but the toggle for function keys makes me uneasy, because I hit f12 and ctrl+- a lot. Anyone have similar problems?
>>
guys, gateron V cherry redpill needed. Worth paying 15$ more for cherry blue instead of gateron blue?
>>
>>59272046
i would pay more for gaterons. it is a preference thing though, i heard some people like scratchy expensive garbage.
>>
>>59272046
Gaterons are usually seen as the best MX clone brand, and are usually smoother than their Cherry counterpart.

Hell, I'm currently in the process of converting my Shine 3 from Cherry to Gateron browns.
>>
>>59270962
A couple of weeks ago. I try to do that every couple of months, specially with white caps and a white plate, which makes any small hair or dust is easy to see.
>>
>>59272100
>>59272114
I'm not so worried about feel, more about general quality. Are they up to par, or better?
>>
>>59272146
not sure about Gaterons but the tactile bump on the stem of my mx blue clone sanded down over time. they must've used inferior plastic or something. For linear switches I won't be ambivalent about chinese clones but for switches like blue, green, brown, clear, etc. always get Cherry baby
>>
>>59272146
I've heard something about their housings being more brittle, and I did get a dud (brown switch with almost no tactile bump) in my batch of 120 so I guess their quality control might not be as good as Cherry's. Or maybe I just fucked something up in there when I opened it up.

Dont know exactly how long they'll last because they only appeared on the market pretty recently, though I doubt it'll be much lower than Cherry.
>>
>>59272046
>>59272146
Have a Gatreon Blue and Cherry Blue on switchtester. Gaterons in general are better if you ask me, less scratchy and more satisfying click.
>>
>>59265946
it was sold when I messaged the seller.... my luck in life is 0

My solution is to have enough keyboards that I never use a single one long enough to get it dirty.

It's an expensive solution.
>>
>>59262821
>>59263346
I want to try something that small. Maybe I'll get a magicforce since it's really cheap just to see. I've only had fullsize and just ordered a TKL
>>
>>59271158
thats not how it works. dust, hair, crumbs can find their way into anything

Dislike MX Reds, Blues are too loud, browns seem boring, maybe clear? Miss the feel of my old model M, but don't want anything so huge/loud.

ANSI

>Form factor
TKL, 75%, or 80%

>Backlight
Don't care

With that kind of budget you can get Korean customs with all their funky layouts. If you want to go old school you can get a new production model F since those are about to go away for ever, or if you aren't going to spend that much on a keyboard you can get a magicforce 82 with cherry clears
>>
>>59269496
Where can i get keycaps similar to these?
>>
Where can I buy a sample pack of every popular switch? I want cherrys, gateron and topre and I only need like 1-2 of each

7-bit round 7, or was it round 6?
Anyway those wont ship until 2019 or 2020 so until then maybe you can get someone to transfer his order to you. Put up a WTB on the deskthority market place. Maybe someone will have second thoughts and give you his order

Pretty sure SP are telling 7bit to fuck off with any new buys.
>>
>>59277635
Thanks!

There's some pretty nice pics out there, guess I'll have to find a good agent or something, the OTD stuff looks amazing, though everything looks years old-- I'll have to find out what's current.
>>
>>59278092
You can just check deskthority or geekhack to see new projects
>>
>>59268661
Don't you think I tried that? Show me a Magicforce 82 listing anywhere and I'll suck your dick.
>>
>>59268367
>handwire a custom layout
I've got moderate soldering experience. I'm assuming this is a custom keyboard method that doesn't require PCB design or something?
>>
>>59271838
If you use F keys a lot I would look at 75% boards like the Magicforce 82 (if you can find it), Drevo Gramr, MK84, Ajazz AK33 et al.

Found this guy in the scrap bin on the factory floor. Fully functional, I don't know why someone would just toss it. It was very dirty though before this picture; I had to clean it a lot.

Did I land on a goldmine, or just another cheap knockoff shit?
>>
Why did you zoom in on the cap and not the switch?

It's probably a dome.

Yeah, I figured once I saw the green rubber shit. Sad.

Still better than the piece of shit standard office keyboard I was given to start with. At least I can pretend I'm using an IBM around the non-informed...
>>
Should I give linears a chance? I like my ergoclears but fuck me is it expensive to outfit a board with them, makes me want to gamble on some gat blacks since they're like $40 shipped for 110 on switchtop
>>
>>59280313
Linears are great. I feel like not enough people give them a chance because of all the people who hype up tactile switches (MX Browns excluded).
>>
>>59280313
I used to shittalk linears and thought mechanical switches with no tactile bump or click were pointless, then I got a board with gat reds and this shit is like typing on a cloud, smooth as fuck. Still like blues better for typing, but linears are nice too.
