Anyway can somebody post that picature of the different cap shapes? Barrel, cylinder, sphere, etc. Thanks a bunch.

I don't know what to recommend in that price range but keyboards like that one are almost impossible to replace the caps due to nonstandard key sizes.

You can probably find this off some chink site if you don't want to wait for another drop. Supposedly they're not nearly smooth enough like the old HE boards though.

yeah the Chinese. You can find them on Taobao

God you guys are gay. I see this every fucking day and haven't commented yet. Justify to me how it is worth it to spend money (any money) on a keyboard when I can just steal a spare lenovo from work. You have my attention.

It's more comfortable to type on. That's the main point really. Try asking your non-jew colleague if you can borrow a mechanical board.

Thats not small. Maybe something like the 1800 layout since that is about as big as a TKL while still having a numpad. You can pick up a cherry g80-1800 for around 70-80 bucks, or you can get a Leopold 980m if you want a more modern keyboard

you could make one yourself based on the gh60 gmk/qmk firmware. you just need to modify the switch plate in some vektor editing program or CAD program.

The actuation/bottom out weight thing is annoying. Just publishing a force graph would solve things.
>>

That'd be the dream but we all know these people are lazy as shit and don't wanna bother doing up force graphs for all the various slider options.

Even Zeal and those Originative fags don't bother with it and they only have 4 and 3 variants respectively to deal with, lazy asses.

At least there are a bunch of force graphs here:

https://input.club/the-comparative-guide-to-mechanical-switches/

Speaking of, are MOD switches ok? With how good Originative's international shipping is compared to other sites, I can actually get an order of 110 mod switches + custom springs from them for about $6 cheaper than stock clears + custom springs anywhere else

IIRC, no stabiliser was a deliberate decision by Rama. He decided he thinks 2u keys feel better without stabs at all, so he never added the four small holes to the PCB for it.
>>
>>58999417
Well his customers are clearly okay with it. So what would people use a 10 key macro pad for? I honestly would have picked up one of the 4 button ones if they were cheaper but I don't even know what I would do with it.

I do a lot of Photoshop / drawing work where the workflow is much more convenient with a macro pad of some sort. I wanted a pad that had the macros onboard as opposed to in software so I could just unplug it from my main computer and take it with me to the couch while on a portable tablet. Should be good for that.
>>

There are existing off the shelf products that do exactly that for half the price, the only reason to ever pick the Rama over them is if you actually think that ludicrously gaudy and oversized case is aesthetically pleasing.

Alpine Winter DCS (pictured) - I just picked these up for my V60, just waiting for a high-profile alu case to arrive before fitting them. The groupbuy finished but I believe Clueboard still have some sets for sale.

Alternatively you have DSA LightCycle, the next round starts early March and has Alps support this time round.

TaiHao have made some cheap sets in both Dolch and Olivetti colours, they can be found on the used market or probably Aliexpress etc.

Lastly, you can salvage some really nice ones from old Alps keyboards - the alphas from the old Apple boards are nice, Dell and Lexmark I believe used Alps too, there's a nice set of white w/ dark purple legends from a Xerox machine floating around.

ABS is a common cheap plastic found keyboards. Its not verry resistant to oils and will quickly develop a yucky shine like pic related. If you've ever seen those old keyboards that look like they've been soaked in piss those are made from ABS as well since it yellows over time. PBT on the other hand never yellows and is much more resistant to wear compared to ABS and is also softer too the touch
>>
>>59002461
Double Shot and Dyesub are both good and have about 0 chance of the legend ever fading. Don't ever bother with anything else.

PBT is normally better than ABS, but there are some people who stick by GMK's double shot ABS for its thickness and quality.
>>

Aliexpress has some cheap PBT keycaps for like 30-40 bucks in all sorts of funky colours

Just wait till they have a sale on Cooler Master Quickfires. They're a decent low-end board with a standard layout that you can find for cheap. They're essentially rebranded Filcos.

can anyone tell me what this shit is. whatever it is its always built up on my keyboard and I have to clean it off
>>
Deciding between Cherry MX Reds and Browns. Which does /mkg/ recommend?
>>
>>59011624
That's greese. Stop eating at your keyboard. Soak all of your keys with denture cleaning tablets to clear it off.
>>
>>59011624
really? Have you never seen dirt before? Its just dead skin, oils, and dust

the only clear switches Leopold offers is on the 660m, The 980m can be converted to ergo clears if you want
>>
>>59012098
can't really do that, don't have the tools/time to do something like that, any similar recommendations? I really like that color scheme it's comfy

get a g80-1800 for 70 bucks. Since its PCB mount you don't need to do any soldering. Just pop the switch open and replace the stem

Scratchiness is from springs not shafts. Cherry shafts have an intentional texture so your finger can feel a minute bumpiness when the switch is moving up and down. Gateron doesn't have any applied texture because they just copied the shape of the shaft and have not been doing R&D in ergonomics and switch technologies for 50 years...but sure everyone who buy's Cherry over Gateron is a "cuck" because someone thinks smoother keystrokes equal better or better quality.

inb4 "dat's mold-wear brah, Cherry has old molds..." -- No you're not a tooling engineer even though you have rare Clacks on your board. That type of texture is not the result of aging molds.
>>
>>59012538
Why are vintage blacks smoother?
>>
>>59012552
Through wear. The texture on the stem has just been worn down smoother. Unless someone magically finds a vintage NOS board and it's still smoother, then it may be different molds.
>>
>>59012568
Molds themselves wear.Molds are always changing, thank God autists don't know this yet.
>>
>>59012604
Yes, molds also wear down. I can almost guarantee that no one here knows how often Cherry changes it's molds for switches though.
>>
>>59011624
This is why people use pbt caps.
>>59012538
That doesn't change the fact that lots of people prefer smooth switches and dislike scratchyness. and since cherry cost almost twice as much they don't have any reason to use cherry switches.
>>
>>59012552
>Why are vintage blacks smoother?
Allegedly they used to use a different plastic for the stems and housings.

The cuts in the font are necessary because of the 2-shot process they've used. In order to get more uniform light dispersion and simplify the creation of diverse numbers of legend molds, they use a completely solid (no holes are allowed in the legend molding) mold for the legend "part" of the keycap. The downside is you cannot have any legends with closed loops.

Other 2-shot backlit keycaps have closed loops, but they suffer from non-uniform lighting and are more tedious to engineer.

Quickfires are not rebranded Filcos. The design of the outside of the case is near identical, but the thickness of the case (thinner) and the internals are different - completely different board, controller, and USB connector module.
>>
>>59012998
Are they still worth getting though?
>>
>>59013013
CM quickfires are good boards, yea.
>>
>>59013013

Hard to beat for the money, but more likely not to last as long as a higher end tenkeyless like a Filco or KUL.
>>
>>59013035
How long do those boards last on average? Besides I honestly don't mind waiting and then buying a new keyboard once that one breaks down.
>>
>>59013022
So I was looking at the CM quickfire and I noticed that while it has a numpad, it has no arrow keys (the arrow keys are on the numpad). Should I just get the TKL version of it or is there a TK version that has arrow keys?
>>
>>59013356
If you want dedicated arrows & a numpad, it'd just be a full size board. I guess just choose between numpad, arrows, or having more space for the mouse.
>>
>>59013372
I mean there IS the CM Quickfire XT, but that's out of stock. I guess I would rather have arrow keys rather than a numpad if it came down to it, I just would prefer to have a numpad to put numbers down on if I have to do calculations or something like that.
>>
>>59013424
You will get used to using the arrow keys on the numpad pretty quickly. It is a very cozy setup.
>>
>>59013424
get a 96-key

they're about the size of a TKL and have all the functions of a fullsize
>>
>>59001604
>>59000825
I just meant interesting ones with a qt image printed on it or some shit
>>
Just wondering, are there mice generals?
>>
How do I go about making a custom keypad/numpad? I have the switches ordered and I probably want to hand-wire them and slap some controller on.

What controller should I pick for a numpad + 4 keys?

How do I do casing and backplate stuff?
>>
>>59012069

Can I ask what camera you use for this pic? I think this looks beautiful. Both the keyboard and the photo itself. I'm no photographer myself so it might be shit by photographer standards but as a pleb I think it looks beautiful.
>>
>>59011312
You have to turn around and buy translucent PBT keycaps for the Ducky One though.

https://world.taobao.com/item/531398557252.htm

numpad case for like $12
>>
>>59014767
It looks like that case only uses PCB mount stabs. There's no way to stabilize the keys if you handwire it.
>>
>>59014780
yeah, but no stabs isn't too big of a deal on 2u keys
>>
>>59014598

Thanks. It's just the camera on my G4 phone. fstop 1.8, 1/15sec shutter speed, ISO-200, 3400K white balance.
>>
>>59014780
>>59014793
I think I'll go for the laser cut aluminium backplate and just use long stands or something.
