Why does it have separate return and enter keys

On a MacBook with no number pad, the key combination fnreturn produces the Enter key. Individual programs can decide whether to treat the two keys as separate or the same. Many programs treat them the same.

The only example I have been able to come up with that still treats the two keys separately is iTunes: when browsing tracks, return starts playing the track, while enter (or fnreturn) enters track rename mode.

How much am I looking at spending if I wanted to put my own 60% poker style board together (I fell for the zealios meme)? Just for the internal shit, not including keycaps, switches, and a case.

And any suggestions for what to buy? Only requirements are that I have to be able to make capslock the function key, the bottom right cluster into arrow keys like on the pok3r and it doesn't have any unprogrammable buttons like the pok3r's layer keys.

Have you tried moding a cream apls to be clicky?
Im very curious about how would they feel. If clone enough to clicky whites / blues, it would spare me the trouble of geting a board with those.

That's the first time I've heard about something such as modding alps. How would one go about doing that?

>>

Dude I fucking wish man.
There's no way I can find something like that in just any thrift store. I'd have to scour across the county if not my entire state.

The only old ass, really really nice Mechanical keyboard I've seen recently was attached to a typewriter in my school's comp sci building.

Well, if you are using the original AEK II cream alps, you can do this: http://imgur.com/a/pgWh2

Im not surre if it works on other kinds of alps tho. Probably only on tactile ones.
>>
>>52512004
Oh cool.

I'll try that out in a bit and report back
>>
fucking hell costar stabs suck

Is it even possible to buy cherry stabs and change yourself? I would need a new plate right?
>>
>>52512046
Also, if you want it to be more or less tactile, you just need to bend the leaf. Recently I got some OD1 alps that sucked, probably because the keyboard condition was very bad.

It was suposed to be clicky, but it realy wasnt. Sounded like when you lube cherry blues too much and it looses clickyness. Then I started bending the leaves and now is most tactile (and clicky) switch I tested so far. The sound is so lound that now I regret bending it that much.
>>
>>52512114
>I would need a new plate right?

Yep.
I dont like them very much either, but try ading some grease to the wires. At least it wont sound like that.
>>
>>52512114
Just lube them, they are still worse than cherrys afterwards, but just a little.
>>
>>52512190

Oh, it usually happens with ducky caps.

Use a dremmel, or sandpaper, or a knife, of anything like that to wear the inner walls of the stabilized keys. Ducky PBT is too thick for costar stabs.

60$ boards are a scam.
They are the reason people try them and then think it's all a meme and go back to 15$ Logitech membranes.

Go expensive or go home.
>>
>>52512693
Whenever I see SA keycaps I'm not sure if I like them or think they are disgusting.
I got a single cap here and the sound when typing is quite nice, but it's still kinda weird to press.

Shitty caps, and if you spent 60$ on a board it means you are too poor to spend 100$ on good ones so you are stuck with them

Bad stabilizers (see costar)

Low quality and inconsistent switches (or fakes like kalih)

Low quality control in general so you risk defects like keys and leds dying

Terrible cases which lead to poor sound and feel

Do I go on?
>>
>>52511789
I've done it to my AEKII. They feel and click wonderfully now, and are almost as nice as my model M. Not nearly as smooth though. Undamped and clickified creams feel great, try modding if you have a board available.

It's the same with DSA. The profile was designed specifically for keyboards with highly curved/angled plates, and with a modern flat plate it's really un-ergonomic and feels like shit to use. But now because of the massive circlejerk of a MK community it's the hottest meme around.

my wasd v2 came in and I'm very happy

this is my first non-gaymen mechanical keyboard and it feels absolutely lovely to type on, only thing I'm mildly annoyed at (entirely my fault) is that font on the alphanumeric keys is very small, it looked enormous on the custom layout sheet but honestly I can get over it
>>
>>52514168
One's programmable, the other isn't.

Since 60% keyboards without programmability are retarded, the choice is obvious.
>>
>>52514168
hhkb is more expensive, topre switches, different, more obscure layout

pok3r is cheaper, cherry switches, standard layout

both are meme boards, only solution is to get both
>>
>>52514168
>gimme some arguments
topre profile is superior see >>52512878

hhkb fn layout is superior to pok3r (especially arrows and nav cluster) but pok3r has the pn layer iirc

backspace over return is pure genius and once you get used to it you get hooked

pros of the pok3r is leds if you like those and more caps choice

also hhkb has no metal plate so it's more portable and has no ping whatsoever

in fact hhkb has the best sound of all boards period. I'd link you youtube videos but those are all very loud and don't give justice to how silent topre on plastic really is compared to cherry on metal

Honestly I wouldn't blame you for getting the poker, but the hhkb isn't just a meme.

- sent from my happy meme
>>
>>52513772

Enjoy your shit quality plastic. Objectively worse than the original boards due to Unicomp cheaping out on materials.
>>
>>52514219
Report back here and let us know when your caps start to get shitty. That seems to be the biggest complaint about them.
>>
>>52514280
Just typed my first sentence and they're starting to fade now!
>>
>>52514280
What should I be looking for, exactly? My other mechanical keyboard was a Razer Blackwidow (when they were still cherries instead of whatever cheaper brand they use now) that I had for over a year with no issues. Are you talking about general wear off the tops themselves or will the keycaps literally just start to break down? I really don't care about wear, I'm used to that.
>>
>>52514308
Things like the legends starting to fade, the caps getting shiny, color fading. stuff like that.
>>
>>52514407

>>52520362
There's really no difference between Kailh and Cherry. Especially as someone without experience with either, you'd not be able to tell one from the other. Really, the only notable problem with Kailhs are the lower QC standards means you'll get a wider range of discrepancies in actuation force between switches. This is typically to be expected with any keyboard that uses springs, and odds are good you won't really be able to tell the difference between a 50g switch and the 60g one next to it unless you were trying to pay attention to it. Linear Kailhs are smoother than their Cherry MX equivalents, too, which is nice. The clicky switches are about the same, in terms of function to Cherry MX, there's hardly a difference; I prefer Cherry MX Blue's click.

Yes its possible, don't listen to salty niggers like >>52522283
If you're wanting something brand new though, you're probably not going to find much.
But there are plenty of used keyboards in great condition for $50 and less.
Just do some research.

He will buy crap, have a bad experience for his money (which are a lot to him), and come back here to tell us we made him fall for a stupid meme.

Congrats

he's not wrong. even second hand keyboards are rarely cheap. mechanical keyboards are not something someone should be looking into if price is their primary concern.
it's mostly for the protection of the buyer, really. if you come into this with money as the first object, you can only be disappointed.
>ugh i payed $60 for this? fugg i fell for the mech meme
mechanical keyboards should be purchased exclusively by people who's first and foremost priority is getting a good keyboard, not a cheap one.
>>
>>52522327
thanks, I just want something decent that's used, that later I can put keycaps on later

is mechmarket a good place to look and ask? Are there any red flags to stay away from? Certain switch brands? Alibaba?
>>
>>52522376
>>52522381
thanks for admitting that mechanicals are largely a waste of money guys
you're really doing your general a service

>thanks for admitting that mechanicals are largely a waste of money
only a fool would argue that they aren't. some will go "oh but muh durability and longevity" but i'm over $200 in this board, i could've got 20 $10 boards from walmart that, combined, would probably last longer, and at the end of the day, it's still just a piece of plastic with buttons on it.

but life ain't always about money, kid. you'll learn that some day. some things are worth paying extra for.

I approach pretty much every purchase in this manner. They're nothing wrong with me wanting to control my budget.

They're nice for coders and gamers, but I'd hardly call it a hobby.. I'm not interested in collecting them like some people here are (nothing wrong with that, I know groups who collects arcade sticks)

Never been. But im sure its a "decent" place to start. Check out https://deskthority.net/wiki/Category:List_of_all_keyboard_switches and bounce around and see if anything interests you. Look up some youtube videos of them and get a good starting point. Cherry and alps are going to give you the most customization options as far as key caps go with cherry being #1

is this some gay person lingo i'm not understanding?

Hello I just lined up an office job. Since avoiding typos is important and I am autistic I need to bringa mechanical keyboard that won't annoy others. I usually use a unicomp model m and quite like it. Any suggestions?
>>
>>52522552
ctrl+f, search "quiet" in this thread.
>>
>>52522552
topre or a nice linear switch would be quiet
go for a brown if you want a cherry thats tactile and quiet, i think grey is the heavier version too

>>52522508
It pretty-much means "stop acting like a faggot" in nicer terms

I use topre with plastic plate and people are happy around me.
Topre with metal plate is less pleasant tho.

Also your desk will play a big role so consider a mousepad or a towel under the keyboard.

Haha. Cherry mx... Gritty... Hah. You should try more vintage switces. Unless cherry a new batches are terrible that's a silly statement. There's much worse out there.
>>
>>52520066
I got the plate from a guy on geekhack who built something quite similar previously. I contacted him and he got a plate made for himself and for me.

The caps and switches are from an old apple extended keyboard II.

I hear some of the Cherry molds are getting old and having QC issues.

Blues are supposed to be the worst apparently.

Anyone know what kind of springs are compatible with cherry mx?

I mean if I want to try and replace with like a 200g one?

Topre board with Hypersphere's Type S silencers.

Just installed some on my HHKB and it is virtually silent save for some squeaking from the spacebar

Cute. I really like the old apple keyboards. Especially that one.
