Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got an x230 yesterday for a good price and getting another battery in the mail soon. Which linux distro plays nice with the battery? I have experience with most distros, just want to know what is good kernel-wise for the ThinkPad
Yeah. I am actually thinking about upgrading to one. Just for the better processor. But I don't anything thing that intensive so I wonder if I actually need one. (sorry if my English sucks)
It works great for me. I bought new RAM and stuff for it the other day, should come soon, but right now I can run anything for school, and a Windows VM in the background. Never lags.
just bought a x220t for drawing and for having a backup computer running win 7 for all of the stuff that doesnt play nicely on win 10. i plan on keeping it on a stand underneath my main monitor.
should i disconnect the battery from it? i doubt ill ever take it off the power adapter is why im asking.

>Thinkpad p50 is 6lbs and only has an advertised 6 hour battery life
>p50s uses ULV processors and loses thunderbolt 3
>no other thinkpads have thunderbolt options
>dell precision 15 5000 has a piece of shit keyboard/trackpad even though it has thunderbolt 3
literally no fully featured laptops worth buying this year.
>tfw 2016 macbook pros will probably have full voltage skylake and thunerbolt 3 and will be the best laptops of the year
what the hell, why does the P50 have ULV CPUS, they may as well should have called it the T560p, and how can you release a high end laptop and not have TB3 as pretty much everyone has it on their high end laptops.
Guys I've got a t420 with xubuntu on it and the trackpoint looks like its only updating at 30-35 frames per second. Is it something that I have to fuck around with Xorg or what? Fuck with the polling rate and so forth?
I swear when I first use it it looks smooth as hell and then a minute later its stuttery as hell.
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 1.6GHz
x200 seems to be capping at 1.6GHz for some reason. This used to happen every now and then, but just rebooting would fix it, not anymore.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?
Well, it was a free machine so I really can't complain, but this battery only lasts 45 minutes of usage so it's borderline unusable. Unfortunately batteries are really expensive where I live and amazon doesn't ship here either. Should I just order a cheapo from China?
I try asking non thinkpad related question
I am looking at some general groups of notebooks in various price ranges, really from 500-1200€
Just general series lines that can be recommended.
This is what I got so far with 13" being ultrabooks and portability oriented and 15" for general purpose
Dell XPS 13
ASUS ZENBOOK UX305 / UX303
DELL Inspiron 7000 series
Dell Inspiron 7000
Lenovo TP L series
Anything else I should definitely check out?
they are not, they are actually pretty great and I know this already
do you got nothing better? or you jsut here to talk about 7 years old TP for $100 with linux running on them?
its go to recommendation everywhere with the budget
Thinking of picking up a T430.
i5-3320M processor, 240gb SSD, 8gb RAM, integrated HD 4000 graphics
Why is the XPS 13 recommended so much on /g/. Every time I ask, they can only list the tiny bezels while talking down the Macs. It like theres a shilling program for it or something.
I am thinking about replacing the mobo of my x200 with the x201 in the future. Just for a better processor. It seems other have had success with the endevor. Hopefully it won't be too problematic. Has anyone here tried something equally as stupid?
>low ram/disk usage = low power usage
I like Debian/Openbox too but irrespective of distro he needs to be looking at TLP.
PHC was boss for undervolting on C2D machines but nothing like it for modern processors (not that they really need it).
The dedicated cards, particularly those in the W series, perform much better than integrated. If you play vidya at all, integrated graphics won't serve you well at all prior to HD 4000. If you're like the apparent majority of /g/ and all you do is watch anime and shitpost then you'll get better battery life and lower temperatures with integrated graphics.
Just got a t510 for a good price....
What do now familia
Sorry, reposting my problem.
Hey guys, just got an X220, and it's 95% perfect.
The only problem is, there is high pitched whine coming from it from somewhere on the underside. I don't know it's from the CPU area or if it's the hard drive. It fluctuates in frequency and I can hear the same noise in headphones through the audio jack, which leads me to believe it's coil whine of some sort. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed?
I know for a fact that it's not fan whine, because I reduced the fan to zero and could still hear it.
I looked for it in the power settings. The only thing that was set to automatic was something called express card speed. The only other option for that was "Generation 1" so I assumed that wasn't what you were talking about.
Above, there was a section about adaptive thermal management with two things under it, one for AC and one for battery. The one for AC was set to "Maximum performance" rather than "Balanced" and battery was set to "Balanced". I set that one to "Maximum performance" but it seemed to only succeed in raising my temps.
Any other ideas? Can you remember any more of what I'm looking for here?
I play vidya, but I have a desktop for such a thing. There's some vidya that might be fun to play on the go, but I need it mostly for school. The touchscreen seems pretty cool too.
I got an x100e not long ago, despite the underpowered cpu I find it ok for my needs but Id like something slightly bigger, with an ultrabay for an extra hd if possible. What are the smallest models that have it and if possible msata compatible?
Mobile i series are all hyperthreaded dualcores, with the exception of some high-end i7s that you'll only find in 15" T and W series. The only real differences between most mobile i3/5/7 is cache size and clock speed and shit like that. There is a decent difference between mobile i3 and i5 but i5 to i7 is not worth the price hike or increased heat output.
Do you think it would depreciate the value of the laptop even further? I mean, I know it's a cheap laptop to begin with but I feel like very few people would be willing to buy a "Frankenstein" x200
>max out RAM
>wait for German masterminds to finish the BIOS mod and get and Ivy Bridge CPU
Is there anything else I can do for my lovely T420? I already put an SSD in it and put a hard drive in the Ultrabay.
This laptop has brought me nothing but joy, and I want to keep improving it.
>mfw the delivery nigger hands me my MemePad tomorrow

>BOTNET - the browser

>complain about anime on 4chan

>tfw my MemePad x200s arrives today
What distro should I use on this outdated chink shit? Having my eyes on xubuntu
just got this for $2
>after cleaning it with alcohol for 30 minutes I think I will be able to use it
h-how did I do?
I have an Osprey Comet for my T420. Has direct access to a well protected laptop storage compartment, and a sleeve perfect for your hdds. Overall good quality, would recommend.
local scrap hardware shop.
i-it's yellow and slightly cum-stained tho
autists really give $100 for this?
Get's the job done at a reasonable price
Thinking about resale value on a laptop that is already 5+ years old is not a sound /biz/ decision. You don't do things like this to make money on it. It's for /tpg/ cool points and personal use.
I don't know when you'd be planning on selling it, but laptops that old are already a specialty market and are not increasing in value right now. Those models haven't gotten old enough to be "museum" pieces, and even then it's unlikely people are going to want anything but stock unless you have a rarer combination of hardware (best i5 x201 board [cant remember but I think the i7s have some port placement differences -do your research] in x200 shell with IPS mod screen). Sure, you may happen to come across some lazy zealot faggot that will pay you something more than just what an ordinary x201 would be, but don't count on it.
t. t60/1 frankenpad owner
Did I do good? Should I retract my buying and make the guy feel sad? Or keep it and look for an SSD to replace the HDD?
I don't think you change your mind so easily like that. You're stuck with it now unless you throw a fit to eBay or PayPal.
Looks decent from the pictures. Just hope it doesn't come like ass.
xps 13 is massive dog shit. there is terrible coil whine that there is no fix for. ive rma'd three first one came bent the second had a blown out speaker all three emitted a really terrible noise if the keyboard backlight is on. this is for the 9330 and the 9350. again there is no fix. dell is knowingly shipping broken laptops. ive only used dell laptops but ill never go back. every time i mention this the dell shills come out in full force. pic related
First time seeing this laptop, but I instantly know it's probably crap.
>design slightly reminiscent of the Apple laptops (nothing wrong with that) - but it's probably plastic, which means that the paint will eventually get discolored and start chipping away in a few years
when you see the IBM logo you know some fucking business is gonna happen
guy who replied to you the first time
try searching for a registry key named "Attributes" inside
change the value from 1 to 0
>Control Panel > Power > Change Power Saver Settings > Whichever is active > Change plan settings > Advanced > Processor Power Management > Processor Idle Disable > Set to disabled
if that gets rid of the sound it's definitely coil whine
any of you have a samsung pro 840 in your thinkpad?
I've stumbled upon this:
...and I found a good priced pro 840 which I would use in an X201. Any negative experiences here, what should I expect?
Just got my MemePad t530 delivered. Anything I should do or look for before I install Gentoo?
which is better in terms of general battery life? t420 - t410 - x220 - x201?
I know there are slight differences on a computer to computer basis with cpu, ram, etc between each models.
But which would give me the best overall if i buy a new battery after getting the laptop? I'm pretty set on a t420 but will definitely get one of the x-series if battery life is significantly higher.
That picture is so retarded. Fucking druggies; how worthless and deceitful can you be?
So, my mother mentioned that it'd be nice to have something more modern to do simple stuff like managing pictures and maybe a bit of internet. Nothing too complicated, besides reliability and not being too expensive. I was thinking about the X220 area, do you think it'd be a reasonable option? And with the 'more modern' part, she's currently using a Win98 at home.
I bought my T420 when it was new, and haven't done anything special with it (besides "upgrade" to Win10 recently). Are there any tools to set BIOs settings from the OS? I know I use syscfg.exe on Dell systems; but I don't know if there is a TP/Lennovo equivalent (or if that will work with this as well).
How easy was the 1080p mod? The screen size is the only thing that gets weird at times, and a 1080p screen would look pretty nice.
Because we seek false justification and life purpose by using laptops designed for business men and other such people with important jobs and mask our self deprecation behind
>i-i-it just werks
while we hate on people that use that exact same response when questioned about their hardware of choice.
it's a little fiddily the mod as you need to get an adaptor board for it work, and it can have brightness issues, i've looked in to but $50 for the board and then like $60 for the panel so i'm gonna stick with the 1600x900 panel.
Taking the laptop apart wouldn't be a huge deal. I've seen some mention of filing/cutting metal on the inside though, and that's what worries me. I don't want to mistakenly leave some kind of metal dust inside and (with my luck) bridge something with the dust causing a short. I'd prefer no cutting/modification to the chassis, just addition or removal of pieces.
here is my shitposting machine

try to shake your "computer expert" image in the family as soon as you can. it only leads to frustration because >>52495008
no more tech support no more recommendations just let them make their own dumbass decisions
haven't tried turbo on it, will play some CSGO later with turbo on and see if it makes a difference
what this guy said, grain of rice, used arctic silver. be sure to clean out your fan while it's apart if you do it
what is the least i can spend for the best battery life? laptop only or laptop + battery, would love to spend less than 75$ lol
i bought pic related for muh dankpad and it pulls 6+ hours on balanced power setting with brightness at like 12/15, could probably squeeze 10+ at lower brightness and battery saver on. it was $33
or are you trying to buy a laptop for $75, in which case fuck man glhf
got to give it to some manufacturers as they are starting to use aluminium, and carbon fiber, instead of just plastic, but like phones there's only so much you can do with laptop, although they could stop doing that pissing taper keep it one thickness throughout as you get more better for not much more weight gain.
360$, how bad did I fuck up? http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Lenovo-Thinkpad-X220-Multitouch-Tablet-Pen-PC-8GB-128GB-SSD-Windows-10-NICE-/252245724694?nma=true&si=Y5ZG%252FL3t2XMSI1kTEhu3rZRcthY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Simply look at the aspect ratio and bezel design.
Clearly widescreen without the fucked asymmetric bezels in the T61, and missing the UltraConnect antenna mouldings. Plus the inclusion of a webcam.
>tfw you will never unload 200 million dollars worth of credit default swaps using a thinkpad in a pub
Thanks for responding again.
I looked in the registry for that attribute. Under the path you listed, there are two folders with an Attributes key. The first one has something to do with Power Scheme Personality and the other has to do with Device idle policy. I'm guessing you're talking about the second one considering the second step. Or is that second step just another way of editing the registry?
so i just realize theres isnt a simple way to autorotate screen on non-KDE DEs or WM for my X220t, as my script used the axis data from HDAPS and let the KDE Wacom control center "kcm_wacomtablet" to do the rotation. now that im on cinnamon cuz the jews at Nitrux havent update my theme to Framworks 5 im on a predicament. i dont want to code all the shit to rotate the wacom digitizer in tandem with the xrandr screen rotation
Hi /tpg/, I just upgraded from my X220t to an X230t, and when I swapped my SSD from the X220 to the X230, Windows 10 randomly decided the de-activate itself. Is this a known issue, and are their fixes for this problem?
In case anyone asks, I first pirated Windows 7 and then upgraded to windows 10 back on the X220.
The first thinkpad I used was in 2004 to play Rome:Total War at a friend's house. However, I can't remember which model it was.
It was running XP so it was a current to the time. Does anybody have a guess which model would have been common to own back then?
Hey guys, just ordered my first thinkpad off of Ebay. Did I get cucked?
>128gb mSATA ssd
>500gb SATA hdd
>i5 2520M 2.50 GHz
I'm pretty stoked, as its a significant upgrade to my current machine (hp dv6), but did I get a good deal price wise?
Anyone know of a way to get replacements for these rubber nub things on X220t's?
you gotta get whole new keyboard bezel, not to mention they are almost nonexistent, trust me, I was looking for them for like week, then surprisingly found one almost localy unsurprisingly superexpensive for what it is
Hey anons, i have an issue:
I was given a HP Pavilion dv2000 because the people using it didn't need it, or they upgraded to a better machine. I put kali linux 1.1.0 on it. worked great. ff 5~7 months. kali linux 2.0 comes out. i basically now have a brick. cannot update/upgrade (apt-get). tried 2.0, but works like shit. went below 2.0 again, and still can't do anything.
Does the T420 (blaze it) work well with kali 2.0?
Haven't gotten my x220t yet, but if it's missing the nubs I planned on just 3d printing a couple with flexible filament.
Here you guys are, talking about your great-great-grandfathered Thinkpads, that come used covered in grime and cumstains. And here I am, waiting to be allowed to pull the trigger on one of the 2016 models. The only acceptable compromise would be to purchase a 2015 model, but the prices haven't really gone down yet. Fuck, I need something portable soon too. I almost bought a T440p the other day, for $500 or so, but that would mean I'd have to mod the touchpad. While fun in its own right, I just don't think it's going to hold up very well for three or four years.
I bought a HP EliteBook 8560w with a i7-2820QM and a Quadro 1000m graphics card it for $375. This thing is still a beast. The Lenovo W541 with a i7-4810 only gets about 20% better scores in all the benchmarks I have seen, and it is around $1800.
i see them around 40 usd, which is more than i paid for one of the X200 I bought.
which is pretty funny. don't have the dosh for it now, but will pull the trigger since it's pretty essential.
An X230 or something with 1080p and IPS panel.
I'm gonna start a graphic design course, I went with a T410 because it was the only Thinkpad I could get but I can say that having a 16:10 aspect ratio is a godly.
You could also get an X220t but that goes more expensive.
I'm going to be using it for streaming. I saw a post on a video forum that someone used their T420, but looking on ebay/newegg I can't seem to confirm that any model actually has 3.0.
I'm excited to go back to a real laptop after using an ultrabook for these past few years. The T460p looks really good but I have to wonder why it doesn't come with an optional dGPU. Maybe the integrated gpu in the 45w cpus are as powerful as the 930m?
it does though?
honestly the skylake thinkpads beyond the x1 carbon and the P series are seriously disappointing. Lots of fragmentation leaving no true premium model for nearly every series
my screen rotate button recently started working in gnome, not automatic, but it does rotate the digitizer as well
Opening a terminal and typing a single command is not a big fucking deal, if you have a tiling wm it's even easier and faster.
However, there are some people using floating window managers and actually arranging their windows manner just for the perfect screenshot.
Those people are fucking idiots, don't mind them. Most Linux users know better than that and script their shit.
Does anybody know.anything.about docking stations? I have two X220s, one with i7. Are there any docking stations with usb 3? Or with hdmi? is the ultrabase a good option? which other ones r gud?
