Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got an x230 yesterday for a good price and getting another battery in the mail soon. Which linux distro plays nice with the battery? I have experience with most distros, just want to know what is good kernel-wise for the ThinkPad

also no windows posters, did i do good posters, or gaming posters allowed
>>
>>52478689

Yeah. I am actually thinking about upgrading to one. Just for the better processor. But I don't anything thing that intensive so I wonder if I actually need one. (sorry if my English sucks)
>>
>>52478753
you install whatever powersaving crap you want, regardless of distro. but they won't save you if you've got a shit battery.
>>
>>52478814
It works great for me. I bought new RAM and stuff for it the other day, should come soon, but right now I can run anything for school, and a Windows VM in the background. Never lags.
>>
>>52478811
Bunsen labs ran smoother on my x200 than arch to my surprise. I don't really care for debian anymore but it's a great lightweight distro.
>>
just bought a x220t for drawing and for having a backup computer running win 7 for all of the stuff that doesnt play nicely on win 10. i plan on keeping it on a stand underneath my main monitor.

should i disconnect the battery from it? i doubt ill ever take it off the power adapter is why im asking.
>>
>>52478921
Yes. and keep the battery at around 30-40% for storage.
>>

Guys I've got a t420 with xubuntu on it and the trackpoint looks like its only updating at 30-35 frames per second. Is it something that I have to fuck around with Xorg or what? Fuck with the polling rate and so forth?

CPU: Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 1.6GHz

x200 seems to be capping at 1.6GHz for some reason. This used to happen every now and then, but just rebooting would fix it, not anymore.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

I try asking non thinkpad related question

I am looking at some general groups of notebooks in various price ranges, really from 500-1200€

Just general series lines that can be recommended.
This is what I got so far with 13" being ultrabooks and portability oriented and 15" for general purpose

>13"

Dell XPS 13
ASUS ZENBOOK UX305 / UX303
DELL Inspiron 7000 series

>15"
Dell Inspiron 7000
Lenovo TP L series

Anything else I should definitely check out?

Why is the XPS 13 recommended so much on /g/. Every time I ask, they can only list the tiny bezels while talking down the Macs. It like theres a shilling program for it or something.
>>
>>52480553
it's the screen is nice and has a decent res, the keyboard is pretty good and is the touchpad, the only downside to it is that it can only have 8gb of ram.
>>
>>52480553

There is a lot of shilling on /g/ in general.

oh scrap that they now let it have 16gb of ram so yeah that's the best 13 inch laptop you can get.

I am thinking about replacing the mobo of my x200 with the x201 in the future. Just for a better processor. It seems other have had success with the endevor. Hopefully it won't be too problematic. Has anyone here tried something equally as stupid?

>>
>>52482420
The dedicated cards, particularly those in the W series, perform much better than integrated. If you play vidya at all, integrated graphics won't serve you well at all prior to HD 4000. If you're like the apparent majority of /g/ and all you do is watch anime and shitpost then you'll get better battery life and lower temperatures with integrated graphics.

Sorry, reposting my problem.
Hey guys, just got an X220, and it's 95% perfect.
The only problem is, there is high pitched whine coming from it from somewhere on the underside. I don't know it's from the CPU area or if it's the hard drive. It fluctuates in frequency and I can hear the same noise in headphones through the audio jack, which leads me to believe it's coil whine of some sort. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed?

I know for a fact that it's not fan whine, because I reduced the fan to zero and could still hear it.
>>52467555
I looked for it in the power settings. The only thing that was set to automatic was something called express card speed. The only other option for that was "Generation 1" so I assumed that wasn't what you were talking about.

Above, there was a section about adaptive thermal management with two things under it, one for AC and one for battery. The one for AC was set to "Maximum performance" rather than "Balanced" and battery was set to "Balanced". I set that one to "Maximum performance" but it seemed to only succeed in raising my temps.
Any other ideas? Can you remember any more of what I'm looking for here?
>>
>>52482482

Mobile i series are all hyperthreaded dualcores, with the exception of some high-end i7s that you'll only find in 15" T and W series. The only real differences between most mobile i3/5/7 is cache size and clock speed and shit like that. There is a decent difference between mobile i3 and i5 but i5 to i7 is not worth the price hike or increased heat output.

Thinking about resale value on a laptop that is already 5+ years old is not a sound /biz/ decision. You don't do things like this to make money on it. It's for /tpg/ cool points and personal use.

I don't know when you'd be planning on selling it, but laptops that old are already a specialty market and are not increasing in value right now. Those models haven't gotten old enough to be "museum" pieces, and even then it's unlikely people are going to want anything but stock unless you have a rarer combination of hardware (best i5 x201 board [cant remember but I think the i7s have some port placement differences -do your research] in x200 shell with IPS mod screen). Sure, you may happen to come across some lazy zealot faggot that will pay you something more than just what an ordinary x201 would be, but don't count on it.

try searching for a registry key named "Attributes" inside

change the value from 1 to 0

Taking the laptop apart wouldn't be a huge deal. I've seen some mention of filing/cutting metal on the inside though, and that's what worries me. I don't want to mistakenly leave some kind of metal dust inside and (with my luck) bridge something with the dust causing a short. I bought a HP EliteBook 8560w with a i7-2820QM and a Quadro 1000m graphics card it for $375. This thing is still a beast. The Lenovo W541 with a i7-4810 only gets about 20% better scores in all the benchmarks I have seen, and it is around $1800.
>>
>>52501206
same here family, are you planning to buy new or some chink stuff? the new 9cell ones are expensive as fuck. pretty much the same price as the laptop itself
>>
>>52501291
i see them around 40 usd, which is more than i paid for one of the X200 I bought.

which is pretty funny. don't have the dosh for it now, but will pull the trigger since it's pretty essential.
>>
>>52501351
40$ new original 9 cell batteries? where dat
>>
>>52501415
ebay/amazon

where were you looking?

I'm from Europe so I was just checking random hardware shops.

Read the guide. What is the best Thinkpad/Lappy for a poorfag Graphics major? I wanna be able to do my graphics shit on the go.
>>
>>52501954
An X230 or something with 1080p and IPS panel.

I'm gonna start a graphic design course, I went with a T410 because it was the only Thinkpad I could get but I can say that having a 16:10 aspect ratio is a godly.

You could also get an X220t but that goes more expensive.
>>
>>52501954
x220t would be nice since it doubles as a tablet, highly portable
>>
>>52501954
T510 with a good screen option. Even the 900p one will kick the shit out of smaller Thinkpads.
>>
>>52502035
>>52502040
>>52502162
but the problem is that I'm a poorfag. All I got to spare is a Dell Inspiron N4030 and 100$
>>
>>52502233
I got my T510 for $95. The deals are out there, anon. You just have to find them.
>>
>>52479533
you can find pretty cheap genuine batteries from china on the bay...
>>
Looking for a Thinkpad T-series with USB 3.0, any reliable ideas?
>>
>>52502474

$20-30 startech expresscard

vs pay a silly premium (assuming you don't have any *actual* reason like CAD or something to buy a newer one)
>>
>>52502515
I'm going to be using it for streaming. I saw a post on a video forum that someone used their T420, but looking on ebay/newegg I can't seem to confirm that any model actually has 3.0.
>>
I'm excited to go back to a real laptop after using an ultrabook for these past few years. The T460p looks really good but I have to wonder why it doesn't come with an optional dGPU. Maybe the integrated gpu in the 45w cpus are as powerful as the 930m?
>>
>>52502602
i7 models do I think
>>
>>52502621
it does though?
honestly the skylake thinkpads beyond the x1 carbon and the P series are seriously disappointing. Lots of fragmentation leaving no true premium model for nearly every series
>>
>>52502602
the T420 doesn't, the T420S does
>>
>>52502643
Maybe it's assumed but the press release didn't mention it. And they're definitely too fragmented
>>
>>52502621
>no curve on palmrest edge
>sd card slot sticking out the front

what the fuck is this shit
>>
>>52498901
my screen rotate button recently started working in gnome, not automatic, but it does rotate the digitizer as well
>>
>>52502777
Quick question, why do Linux users always post desktops with their terminal open and showing one of those shitty ASCII-art logos?
>>
>>52502815
it's just a pretty way to show your specs...
>>
>>52502880
Oh, weird, just seems like everyone does it, like taking super staged pictures of your desk or whatever.
>>
>>52502777
jesus christ these desktop niggers are like a fucking plague

STAY IN YOUR CONTAINMENT THREAD
>>
>>52478829
fuck you
>>
>>52502893

Opening a terminal and typing a single command is not a big fucking deal, if you have a tiling wm it's even easier and faster.

However, there are some people using floating window managers and actually arranging their windows manner just for the perfect screenshot.

Those people are fucking idiots, don't mind them. Most Linux users know better than that and script their shit.
>>
Does anybody know.anything.about docking stations? I have two X220s, one with i7. Are there any docking stations with usb 3? Or with hdmi? is the ultrabase a good option? which other ones r gud?
>>
Thoughts on the T430u?
>>
>>52503142
It's just kinda odd, like if everyone who took screenshots of their Windows desktops opened their command prompt and did a ping or something
>>
>>52498901
Misquote, or are you trying to warn me when I put a distro on?
>>
>>52503484
It's basically a digital signature. Shows pc specs and whatnot. Also shows distro and theme information.
>>
>>52479192
because 1280x800 is that much better?
you are the same retard who would say that the the glorified 1280x800 on the 13" macbook pro is somehow better.

What distro to put on my X220 tablet when it gets here tomorrow? I can get full functionality with arch or mint?

i5 2520/8gb ram/900p/pristine condition

came with a 320gb hdd but replaced that shit so can add +$70 to that i guess
>>
>>52504776
what does pristine condition? nothing has been switch right? Also did you replace with ssd or just add more disk? just curious.
>>
>>52504815
Pristine condition = like brand new, battery barely had any cycles, no scratches, etc.

I also replaced the Ultrabay with a 1TB HDD, but that's a different story desu
