2.5'' ones are more resistant to shock, expecially if not running. If you drop them on a carpet they should mostly be fine (stone/tile floor is a different story though).

The high temp may be a symptom of the failure itself and not a cause. I've seen plenty of failing HDDs heating up way above normal temps.
