I wonder when we'll leave the MUH MINIMALISM era. I mean it's almost a decade after the trend. Is the Mac design's going the be-all and end-all.
>>
>>45603021
It's the only one I have right now. I built it for my son, he's busy playing minecraft on it.

>>45602956
Ooh, delicious Mg alloy finish

>>45603051
Once we get to the point of that acer shitbook with 2 touchscreens again, it can only go back to normal.
>>
>>45603051
minimalism is codeword for less features, which means less parts and money saved on production
>>
>>45603051
Projects like the Novena and the Pi-Top show that there is some future in open hardware design. It's possible that enough Thinkpad enthusiasts exist to fund and develop a proper computing platform.

Are there Thinkpads with displays as good as Retinas?
>>
>>45603371
AFAIK all "retina" displays are glossy, so in fact every Thinkpad screen is better than every "retina" screen

you mean QHD and higher resolutions? yes

Can somebody please try and convince me to go with the T61P over the x200...

Please...
>>
>>45604293
x200 is better.
>>
>>45604324
But it costs more...
>>

I bought a x200 tablet a few days ago for $57 usd. While x61t cost moar. :)
>>

I see X200 for $50-100 nowadays

I meant the x300. Sorry.

I am stuck between the two.
I want to watch anime, and the x61p has a higher resolution screen, however apparently the x300 has a smoother experience for the screen, despite a 1440x900 pixel resolution.

The battery life, heat and sound quality for the x300 beat the t61p out of the water.

The x300 has a 64gb SSD, while the t61p has a 250GB HDD @ 5600rpm

Overall, I like the look of the x300 more, but will it really be better for anime on the go?
>>
>>45604615
I'd go for the X300 too. But if you insist:
64GB isn't a lot. If you save anime on disk for later viewing the limited space will be a major issue. Your alternatives are an external USB drive or watching off DVDs but both options consume far more power due to the extra components that have to be powered, taking a further toll on its already unimpressive battery life.
And it's slow. Really slow. Slower than all X61 models and about on pace with an X60s. Expect it to choke on anything more intensive than web browsing. Video should not be such of an issue due to the more capable GPU but the processor is a liability in almost everything else.
The viewing angles are dogshit.
They are difficult to find and hence expensive.

What would you suggest for portability with an optical drive? As a last resort I was going to go with dell latitude e4300; which seems slightly off par.

The weaknesses you just pointed out are driving me insane now.
>>
Is the Thinkpad x201 touch version any good?
>>
>>45604773
If you can find an X301 for a good price it's worth a shot. It's basically the X300 but with a more capable processor and if you're lucky more storage. It still suffers from a poor display and short (by modern standards) battery life, and an even higher price, however.

Otherwise an X200, X201 or X220 with an Ultrabase will do nicely. The X220 with 9-cell and IPS display will do especially well due to a nice screen, a processor that's miles ahead of anything in the X300 or X301, an mSATA slot allowing you to install both an SSD and a far larger spinning drive for more storage, and far better battery life. The speakers aren't terrible either. It will be thicker, heavier and less elegant, but if those are non-issues that would be my recommendation.
>>
>>45604773
I take that back.

The x300 is better then the e3400

I'm going to buy the x300. You guys better stop me?
>>
>Bought a T60p

>Literally slower than a baytrail tablet
>battery is dead
>screen is almost dead
>new thinkpad models are even worse, like the latest ones which don't even have button for the touchpad and trackpoint
>>
>>45604880
The ultra bay is a big no. Hence why I went to the x300.

I have looked for the x301, but there is little about. I figure I will be fine with the hardware, however will my Anime run flawlessly?

Also what's the battery life on the x300? I thought it was 7 hours.
>>
>>45604894
>You guys better stop me?
No.
>>
>>45604940
Expect no more than about four hours. Core 2 Duos rarely exceed five even if they are low-voltage. Most reviews suggest 3-4 hours new; aftermarket and used batteries will no doubt only provide less.

Core 2 Duos should provide flawless 720p 10-bit playback in any case. Streaming, however, will be a problem.

>Think differently

Is that supposed to be the response to Apple's joke on IBM's "Think"? It's fucking stupid.

BTW my i5 x201 is pretty nice but battery life is really shitty. Anyone else got these troubles?

>Paid to recommend used machines
>Recommend to buy from ebay/craigs list with no central seller
>Lenovo outright stand against buying used thinkpads

What's your battery's max capacity compared to its design capacity? It could be that your battery is really worn.
>>
>>45604993
>It's fucking stupid.
This is really old stuff. It's been ages since Apple used "Think..." IBM created their Think devices much later.
>>
>>45604996
Oh and apparently it is possible to hit the 7 hours claimed with a battery that fits in the optical drive bay. You do lose the optical drive, and finding new batteries that fit borders on impossible, but it could work in a pinch if you're lucky and you need the machine to last a little longer on the road.

For £150 is this my best choice?

I am going to take this laptop around people's houses and all, the last thing I want is for them to complain about a low screen resolution when watching anime.
>>
>>45605181
The resolution should the least of your worries. 1440x900 should be fine for most.
>>
>>45604993
I would be able to answer this if you were able to string together a coherent sentence.
>>
>>45604293
Depends on what you want it for

I have both devices: specifically a 15.4" T61p and a X200

T61p has better screen and performance but woe betide you if it's one of the cursed batch with a faulty nvidia GPU. Fret not though as you can still replace the mobo with an Intel one that doesn't have this issue.

X200 is better if you plan to travel alot. It's really lightweight and easy to use outdoors. Unlike the T61p it doesn't have any issues with its mobo so it's the safer choice.

Pricewise I got my X200 cheaper but it's kinda beat up with a few keys not working and a bunch of cracks, while my T61p is relatively undamaged apart from a loose hinge (display unit wobbles if shaken).

If you want a desktop replacement, go with the T61p. If you want something portable, go with the X200

dat looks sexy as fuck

Why lenovo just doesn't drop them stupid macbook-like new models and bring back to life this glorious old models?

>>

Welcome to /g/, newfriend. Enjoy your stay.
>>
>>45605743
Wow, with that one question you really opened my eyes. I'll sell my thinkpad and get a MBA instead!
>>
>>45605680
I can't even tell you because I don't know what you were trying to say.
>>
>>45605743
For the most part they aren't paying a premium for them, though, unless it is some weird collectible like the fold out keyboard. They buy thinkpads because they have solid build quality and were originally made with high end business class parts so they still hold up today when compared to the consumer laptops they'd be able to afford on the same budget.

I know this is a troll but still I just want to repeat again how much I love (old) Thinkpads.

>beautiful minimalist design
>great built quality
>user repairable
>user upgradable
>great keyboard
>trackpoint is in my opinion superior to a trackpad
>hardware is still good enough unless one really needs a lot of computing power
>good battery life
>commonly found sold used
>great prices

The only weak point to me is the size and weight (which I guess is the price for user repairability) and the screen.

You can't get a better laptop for the price of a used Thinkpad.
>>
What are some thinkpads from the window 95~98 era that are good?
>>
>>45606220
The 700 series is well loved from that era.
>>
>>45606208
My X-series laptops are certainly not particularly large or heavy
>>
>>45603051
Considering how even PC case are going after that type of aesthetic, probably.
>There will never be another Level 10 GT
>>
>>45604894
WAIT! Get the X30, it uses DDR3 ram which is almost half the price of DRR2 ran the X300 has.

>>45605743
Keyboard feel.
And no, I'm not lugging that 18" MSI gaming machine for word processing.

>>45606220
600 is great, it has a Pentium II, the 600E and 600X can take a Pentium III I believe.

760/765 are great too.
>>
>>45606526
>X30
>DDR3 ram

I think you're drunk ThinkTrap, because X30 runs on PC-133, not DDR3

Can someone recommend RAM for my x220? Have 4GB, want to bump up to 8. Not sure if I can just throw another 4 in or if I have to match them somehow.
>>
>>45606675

They can be mixmatched to hell. The computer will run them all at the speed of the slowest stick though. My w510 came with 2x2gb and 1x4gb of all different brands and it works fine. I have an x220t coming in that I got a proper matched16gb pair. That laptop has 4gb already that I'll throw in the w510. 2gb if it's 2x2gb.
>>
>>45606794
Thanks. Holy shit when did RAM start to cost $40?
>>
>>45606582
Typo, X301. My phone sucks.

>>45607191
