Fuck fancy plated meals at high-end restaurants. I've been to my share of bleedingly-expensive restaurants, and they all end up being mediocre and overhyped. There are a lot of places like that in D.C., and they're all cut from the same cloth: American or Italian cuisine, over-designed, and food that tastes like it was microwaved in the back.
What rocks: hole-in-the-wall ethnic food that takes you out of your comfort zone. Case in point, Ethiopian food is pretty easy to find here, and it's rad as hell (the more raw, the better, though I've gotten massively sick that way). Same with Peruvian chicken, Vietnamese pho, etc.
Pic related. Gored Gored. You rip off some of the injera (a sort of sour bread) and use it as a utensil to scoop the delicious meat/spice. Goddamn delicious.
hey f.am, am going to GWU next year, can you name any specific restaurants in the general area that are good? I wanna live inside a nice and cheap hole-in-the-wall foreign restaurant and order the same item every day.
Foggy Bottom isn't exactly the hot spot for good food. I've pretty much checked out every place there and haven't found anything that blew my mind.
With that said:
- Penn Grill is amazing and the old Asian guy there is rad as fuck but it's a quick way to get fat on stir fry
- Roti, Potbelly, etc. are okay and will take your GWU card I think, students at those places all the time
- Founding Farmers is good like twice. You'll tire of it fast.
- I can confirm that the following places blow: Circa, Rasika, BTS, District Commons, Bobby's Burger Palace, Bertucci's, anything on I St.
- IIRC the girl that works at Poppabox is cute as fuck, so go there at least once. Their food isn't great the last time I went.
Your best strategy is to hop the metro to Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan and/or walk to Georgetown. The places there are so-so. You could also cab to Annandale, which is where the adorable Korean shit is.
Ngl, I love when people talk about Ethiopian food, its just so underrated.
It's nice having extremely Ethiopian parents that constantly stock homemade injera, might go warm some up for dinner now.
I actually know a couple of Ethiopian restaurant owners in DC and Virginia and it's okay, but they usually use domestic teff (flour), which is cheaper but not as good as imported whole wheat teff. Most Ethiopian restaurants have inferior ingredients, I'd try to get invited to dinner at an house with the good homemade stuff.
It's kinda hard to explain, especially since I wasn't really taught but instead I grew up with it. You kinda rip a piece off and scoop it by pinching it.
This video shows it pretty well though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IQ4ds7-Zqk
Fucking dropped. Just kidding - everything there looks good. It's just that kitfo is my favorite Ethiopian dish.
Have you been to "Burma" restaurant, though (it's a Burmese place that is just called "Burma")? It's one of my favorite places in DC.
You definitely should. Make sure you can handle spicy food and try a variety platter like >>10905174.
You'll generally get:
-a non-spicy lentil sauce (the yellow one)
-A spicy lentil sauce (the red/brownish one on top)
-A couple vegetable mixes consisting of anything from kale (known as goman; in right of pic) to various spicy peppers mixed together)
-A brown spicy sauce called doro wat (its pretty good, if you get it get some boiled eggs or chicken doused in it as well)
-One of a variety of cooked beef. Just beef cut and doused in something spicy and tasty then cooked. Sometimes barbequed into tibs (or however you spell that, it's weird converting amharic into readable english)
Other things that aren't pictured to get:
-Kitfo, as picutred in >>10905347 is generally considered a favourite amongst Ethiopians, not sure about how it sits with others
-Ibe, a cottage cheese type thing that helps you cool down if your meal is too spicy
-Fit Fit, just soggy injera bits mixed with cooked lamb bits, usually eaten on religious holidays
Ayyy who else /habesha/ here?
Also doro eggs are my favourite thing on injera but I always like Kita or Besu better than injera bc I'm pleb
the more suspicious a foreign restaurant is, the better it is
this has worked for me in multiple countries
It's super pathetic how white (Usually female) vegans make bland-ass meals based around veggies, but "We literally live in shit" Indians can make vegan meals that taste fucking amazing.
INB4 "bbbut my arranged/instagram-able bowl of quinoa and shitty uncooked/unseasoned veggies!"
If thats true then pls say goodbye to your friends. Rip anon
Oh an vegan pizza
true, actually. But there are also the places that >>10905716 mentions. But yeah, always a good time to go sit down with a few good friends and talk over some yummy meat and veggies.
(And you can't forget that bomb ass hot-pot soup)
You will literally die if you continue. Eat more, educate yourself on a high carb whole-foods plant based diet and transition slowly...and being active helps. There are no shortcuts anon.
Here are some basic recipe ideas:
haha, i know what you mean. I like to go around a certain time, so we always beat the crowds. And I'm good friends with the owners of a certain place, so we don't have to wait in such a crowd, anyways.
With friends, we drink literally whatever they have. I'll be honest and say that I hate sake and soju as well (especially warm), but some of the places here in NOVA do melon soju, which is surprisingly tolerable.
pls stop that's my trigger
Yep! I've had a hard time finding good restaurants in Tyson's, I kinda feel like it's weirdly whitewashed despite the huge number of middle eastern women who seem to hang out there.
I spend a LOT more time in the Falls Church / Annandale area because I'm some sort of vietboo/koreaboo/chinaboo or something.
/fa/ is vegan, that's cool.
are you trying to get laid anon?
I had a news crew in from South Korea to do a story on hacking, and I took them out for sushi (just about every sushi joint in the Vancouver area is owned by Koreans, go figure), and they introduced me to it. We closed the place down, it was great. I'm surprised I could walk after.
not killing animals = hipster?
i would understand someone being a hipster for eating gluten free or something even if they didn't have celiacs or a gluten allergy.
just because someone has different foundational morals/ethics than you doesn't mean they're hipster.
Any good cheese alternatives that don't taste like shit?
also forgot, nutritional yeast sounds gross but it's insanely good. adds a cheesy/nutty flavor. pour a bunch of that shit on some pasta with veggies and sauce and you have a god like meal.
So does it have bunch of preservatives/added crap that makes it that way?
No point in eating all these shitty alternatives if you are going to die from them.
filtered water, coconut oil, modified corn and potato starch, tomato juice, potato starch, fermented chao tofu, sea salt, green and red dried bell peppers, cayenne pepper, natural vegan flavor, olive extract, paprika extract, beta carotene
vegans care about what goes in their food.
Probably one of the most pleasant threads I've seen on fa in a long time.
My grandfather fishes in a very nice lake not far from my town so we always have fresh pickerel to eat. Pickerel with some lemon juice and veggies is fucking fantastic.
I was just thinking the same thing about the pleasant thread. Gives me hope for /fa/.
Now, my input: literally anything that's tasty. Recently, I've really been digging Peruvian food. Aji de Gallina really is one of the best things I've ever tasted tbqh. Pic related
Dude, i'm gonna type as sober as possible, that honestly looks fucking pathetic and digusting compared to my meal. and I'm being one hundred percent serious. Sorry we dont cook shit that was perviously in cans. you're a fuking joke dude, and im dead fuking serious. gert areal family that cooks good food, drinks beer and wine and winecoolers and has a good fuking time, and has a milliondollar house on the beach, im seriously.. dont eever potst your fuking families poverty dinner on these forums ever the fuk again bro, and by bro i mean never my bro, fuking faggot.
I find south American food to just be really great. There's a El Salvadorian restaurant in my city and they have the best chicken burritos. They taste almost too fresh and it's a family owned restaurant with the owners wife making all the food.
u fucking gay cunt
really enjoy pic related, there's an amazing place in Berlin
Dont listen to this idiot. Refined sugar=/=fructose
Even refined sugar (not always vegan tho) isnt that bad, diabetes isnt caused by high sugar intake. It is the combination of fat and sugar which causes the insulin not to reach the liver. This results in the liver continuing to produce its own sugar.
How do you think real athletes eat? Not talking about fags from /fit/ with their keto fad diet, I mean pro triathletes and ultrarunners for example.
They eat a 80/10/10 or 90/10/10 diet which you get naturally by eating high carb foods. They eat tons of bananas ajd dates too.
i kno thats why i havent been eating it
feels good but i miss pizza sometimes
Lmao you are stupid.
Where do vegans imitate meat? Sometimes when I go out like once a month I will eat a vegan burger.
Normall I eat only high carb whole foods dishes and a lot of fruit.
Don't have a pic, I don't have a habit of photographing my meals but here's my dinner:
kale, carrot, garlic, lamb's lettuce, sweet corn and tuna salad + apple and a banana (I finally started working out and now I get crazy cramps, hence the banana)
You're not saving shit. You know it's even funnier considering how many items you probably use daily that are produced by companies that are not even close to your sensitive morals. At least meat industry isn't hurting humans.
If you're asking why we have fake chicken nuggets and shit, that's because it's convenient and we grew up eating meat in those forms. A lot of it tastes pretty good too.
Veganism isn't about hippie bullshit, it's about trying not to contribute to pointless death. We don't need to slaughter billions of creatures a year just because they taste good. There are also several environmental reasons.
But at the end of the day, who fucking cares?
>Italy: pasta and bread and baked desserts
>Latin America: rice, beans, corn/flour tortillas
>India: rice and flatbreads every meal
>Middle East: rice and flatbreads every meal
>Asia: rice, rice, rice
everyone's food is carb poison except for based inuits.
please point me to some of those products because i'm certain that all of what i'm using in my personal and daily life contains no animal products.
the meat industry is hurting humans. heard of that study saying that red or processed meat is carcinogenic?
I think something is wrong with you, if
my positive life choices makes you so upset for some reason.
holy shit, kill yourself.
some romaine lettuce in a plastic container with some unhealthy jizz flavoring to trickle over it.
jesus fucking christ
>people still dont know how to eat well
then why mention inuits in the first place?
sorry but carbs aren't as evil as reddit wants you to believe. something like a ketogenic diet is a fad diet and it's not sustainable long term. glucose from carbs is also the main fuel for brain function and other bodily functions.
i'd also like for you to find me a fat person on an 80/10/10 diet.
high levels of ketones are toxic you dumby ;)
keep on your shitty fad diet.
When I was like 8, I ate my cousins entire jug of that shit.
I saw it on his dresser. I wanted just a little bit. But a little wasn't enough so I tried for more.
I kept taking a little more until it was all gone.
He was pissed when he found out.
It was absolutely lovely.
I felt sick at the first one due to travel and being overly tired and couldn't finish the cake unfortunately.
Got a lovely souvenirs though
My weakness... stupid amount of calories though.
>ywn appreciate ramen this much
Best I have had were not prepackaged. The most tolerable prepackaged was Follow Your Heart. Of fresh vegan cheeses, the best was on a pizza I had in Mexico. The cheese was made from potato. Another good one I had was in Dallas at a raw vegan place, and it was made from cashew.
Just so you know, meat is carcinogenic because you cook it. Especially searing and grilling. In fact, the carbon you're creating when you char food (the burnt bits) is actually the carcinogen. Grilled veggies, hell grilled or seared ANYTHING, have carcinogens as well.
Boycott grills, not meat, you ignorant vegan twat.
Just finished my 12h fast, having a shitty caffe latte as a reward
Life is boring without good food. Id rather not be a skinny skeleton than starve myself and wander around dizzy and light headed my whole life
