Keep it simple and on the <38 mm size

Mechanical is better, so you could try going for an Orient Tristar. Seiko 5s in the price range are not the right style.

You could get a Timex Weekender or a J Crew Timex/Bulova, those are both nice. Just don't get a digi and don't get a diver and it won't be that bad.

Lands' End is actually pretty good for the price range, it's way better than like Hilfiger or Nautica.

RL Purple Label isn't really mallcore, it's too expensive. Blue Label is the mallcore one desu

Penguin, besides their one heritage polo shirt, isn't very preppy. No complaints about their polo, it fits well, but I don't hear great things about the quality of their other stuff

>Can canadians be prep/trad?
Anyone can be prep/trad. It projects a different image based on what color your skin is though. europeans look like they go to yale, indians usually look kinda tryhard, middle easterners can look prep or just try hard depending on skin color or mixed race. For asians it has a different implication and might end up looking like korean fashion.

Nationality doesn't have much bearing on if prep works for you. I'm not familiar with canadian schools, but this is mostly a university student and upper class "was in a fraternity" kind of look, or at least has that sort of implication and meshes with that kind of person. In america and england that type of person is pretty prevalent, so I'd expect it to be in canada too. Prep is a lifestyle.

In general you just need good taste even if you're set on a look.
>>
How rich do you have to be to pull off the look wihtout looking like a tryhard?
>>
>>10897727
Rich or not you can end up looking like a tryhard, there are people who pull it off while paying for their own way through university and people who cant pull it off and have family boats. its about taste and being comfortable with what you're wearing.
>>
Typically, I will wear black trousers, turtleneck and a trench coat in the cold, a shirt, sweater and jeans, or a shirt with dark jeans, white trousers or black trousers in warmer temperatures. I wear a lot of Thom Browne, Brooks Brothers and J.Crew. Although, I find it incredibly hard to find a pair of clean, white and preferably canvas shoes, does anybody have any examples? Thanks.
>>
>>10897743
>>10897727
Prep is a strange thing to talk about on 4chan because it doesn't fit the standard almost cosplay-esque threads we have here like lunarcore, goth ninja, or any of that drapey pale shit. I guess people pull that stuff off but in general unless they're musicians or artists or something it doesn't seem that congruent with their lifestyles. prep is kind of formal in that its pretty much accepted everywhere except the projects.

I'm not saying you should dress one way based on what you're doing with your life but its always interesting to talk about how they relate and what someone's choice of clothes says about them.In the past everyone dressed a certain way on college campuses but now you have pure math majors with tattoos, dyed hair and piercings.

I don't have a developed point that I'm making because I don't spend much time thinking about this but I definitely appreciate the more serious image projected by the prep look more than high tops and snapbacks.

Seconding this, I live in Sweden and think I may look tryhard as fuck. The upper classes are massive americaboos though and copy prep religiously to the point where the average upper class swede dresses more preppy than the average upper class American. Although Swedish prep is a bit different, it's usually this
>medium long hair pulled back behind the ears
>jeans are more common
>is more inspired by skiing than American prep
>>
>>10897727
>>10897743
I honestly think you need to be at least upper middle class and have went to/grown up in certain circles without looking tryhard. I went to the finest boarding school in the country as a kid and you were pretty much forced to oblige with the dress code.
>>
>>10898410
My viewpoint is a bit skewed because I go to a university with a largish fraternity scene, but I don't go to an ivy league or an east coast school. I'm second generation american on one side of my family but we're well off and my life choices put me in a situation where prep fits.

There's kind of a checklist with university, background, upbringing, and personality that determines if someone could really pull off the look. Imagine if jfk wore af1's or if one of the bush's tried to pull off punk or something, it just wouldn't make any sense. I think personality and what you're doing with your life has more impact on what's appropriate or not than your parents income though.

Anyways boarding school is /fa/ as fuck, what school?

true.

The prep style finds its origins in 20th century new england where basically the extremely rich white folk, usually WASPs, ran the whole show. They had an extremely lavish lifestyle with country clubs, sailing, golfing and basically anything that people consider "high class white person activities". This is why you have old iconic tailor shops in the new england area and places like the nantucket yacht club. Apparently everything was a plutocracy with a good dose of nepotism. Long story short life was great for that caste but everything was generally corrupt and all that.

The style was iconic of the ivy-league schools and became more mainstream, at least throughout college campuses, around the country during the 70's and 80's.

Basically the style's origin story is what you'd expect and in some ways the style represents a desire to keep that lifestyle alive, but its popular amongst a much larger crowd just for how great it all looked.
tl;dr: it looks fuckin sick dude yolo wear whatever the fuck you want, and if you want to own a yacht one day dress like it

Ehh, sure. On my campus there are a lot of Asians who try and fail hard at looking preppy because they fall into 2 or 3 categories. First are the fratheroes who wear pink and backward caps and think they are prep, and second are guys with ear piercings and spiked hair who think a sweater makes them preppy. Then there are sweatpants, polo shirt, and sandals types.

Then again there are some I see that pull it off great. Prep works well on any ethnicity so long as you do it tastefully.

dude needs to button his collar. the overcoat is a little gaudy for prep as well but it works.

Don't get hung up on all the subtle little rules of prep unless you're actually out boating with a bunch of rich new englanders or hanging around people who really know their shit. You don't even need to wear an OCBD or have natural shouldered (unstructured) shoulders on your suits and blazers to be "prep" in most peoples eyes.

That being said, ralph lauren is considered to be a bastard brand and is generally for plebs. the horse isn't a status symbol, its an image of classlessness.

It could still be considered prep, but at the very least its colorway is relatively modern and cold.

Most of the prep style has a moderately warm tone to it and active undertones. It should fit with the basic lifestyle implied by the prep scene.

I'm hitting the sack so I can get up before the sun tomorrow, but an important concept behind the prep lifestyle is enjoying life. you should own a boat because you enjoy sailing and boating, not because you need to have a boat larger than your co-workers or peers.

This is important to mention on /fa/ because a lot of you sneakerheads, yeezy followers, and high fashion gurus buy clothes and shoes to show off. You'll probably notice that little to none of the really quality prep gear has visible branding. Ralph Lauren Polo has visible branding and its the laughing stock of the prep community, it doesn't get it.
>>
Brand guide:

God tier (Generally consistent in quality):
Brooks Brothers (Original American outfitter)
J Press (Old New Haven outfitter, makes sack coats and blazers. Shaggy Dog sweaters are very good)
Mercer and Sons (good OCBDs)
Bill's Khakis (pretty obvious here)
Barbour (English, not American. Excellent coats regardless)
Gant (??)
Ben Silver (??)
O'Connell's (Sweaters are good?)

Good-to-OK tier (Makes good stuff but not always consistent):
LL Bean (Norwegian crewneck sweater is excellent, so are the duck boots)
J Crew (Generally a bit budget-friendlier and fashion-forward than these other brands, but decent if not great)
Lacoste (best polo shirts, but avoid tracksuit stuff)
Patagonia (for outdoorsy stuff, otherwise you'll just look like a frat boy)
Bass (classic penny loafers)
Lands' End (kinda like discount Brooks Brothers in some ways)
Brooks Brothers Red Fleece (Not as good as Brooks Brothers, in some ways trying too hard to look preppy. However, the quality is generally better than the imitation-tier brands and the fit is very slim if you are a skeleton.)

Imitation tier (New brands, mixed to poor quality, imitating preppy style instead of being prep):
Polo RL (although some of their stuff is/was legitimately good, like their polo shirts. In general, avoid them because the pony logo screams tryhard.)
Hilfiger (a step above Nautica and Vineyard Vines, similar to Polo RL in some aspects. Their old OCBDs with contrast stitching on the buttonholes were decent.)
Vineyard Vines (Frat brand, mixed quality. Fun ties though.)
Southern ______ (Frat brands, mixed quality)
Nautica (Mall brand that sorta imitates prep sometimes)

Shit and not-prep tier:
Abercrombie (For teenagers with too much money and too little taste)

Dubiously prep:
Fred Perry for white M3 solid polo shirt. Quality is good, made in England, but the brand is not preppy anymore.

Added some brief descriptions and a few more brands to the list. Would appreciate extra notes and suggestions)

can't tell if you're being sarcastic but I just tried to briefly summarize what I know. Probably some of it needs revision though. Hope this helps a few people in dressing a bit more tastefully than the average newbie.

It's the same company which owns H&M and COS who also owns Gang, actually.

Just gonna drop this here. I think they look pretty cool, gonna cop a bag as a beach bag for the summer. Other than that, where can I buy preppy bags? No backpacks.
>>
>>10906264
>J Crew
bit memey but they have some alright bags

Filson is good if you need a duffel bag

I have an unkillable Lands' End tote bag that I bought maybe 15 years ago and have used ever since, but not sure if they're still good.

Can I still pull off a pastel preppy look for the summer if I'm not white? Shitskin here, my arms have a pretty dark tan but my face is sort of pale. How do I into prep?
>>

The grey on grey is bad, the watch is pretty awful, too. The jeans on the other hand, I cannot see them properly but it's possible that they're raw denim. I have a pair of Saint Laurent raw jeans (not prep I know, but nobody would know they're Saint Laurent which is why I bought them) and they have a similar colour and stitching.

kjp is frat/imitation tier.
It's not terrible and you might be able to look good in it, but its not real prep.
>>
>>10907529
it depends. post pics of a fit and we'll judge you.
>>
>>10907529
Pastel prep is fratcore.

And if you're darker than a lightskinned non-tanned (from being in the sun) kebab, then you're pretty fucked. A lot of kebabs try to dress like a bastardised bling version of fratcore where I live and it looks like cancer.

For some reason a lot of indians and middle easterners go full bright pastel, it doesn't work as a prep look. it just looks out of place and international student-y. I think if they went with darker and more conservative colors a lot of them could pull off something similar to prep even with the skin color difference.

For reference I'm half middle-eastern but grew up in america. I usually pass for white as my skintone is european looking and my features are somewhere in between. My middle-eastern family isn't dark and doesn't look like anything a texan would pull a gun on. I can pull off a lot of the style but shy away from some of the brighter colors and pastels for fear of looking like some clueless foreigner. Where I go to school a lot of kuwaitis and saudis just ruin it with brights. Luckily the chinese students just wear that weird high fashion all black stuff that costs like $600 for a tshirt instead of bastardizing prep.

Don't have any right now
My face is not that dark, the outside of my forearms is darker but the inside is pale enough for my veins to show blue.
>>10907807
I wasn't really thinking to do really bright stuff, just like pastel colors but really muted and faded.

Nope. Go with rich tones rather than fratcore pastels, those I think would work better. I'm a fairly pale asian/white guy from a preppy background but I still look ridiculous in pastels.

Personally I would only go for maybe a belt or shirt from KJP, but I want some of their madras collection. I'm new to prep-ish style and scared to go that loud. Glad to know other people know/like Gant. Also not a fan of Brooks Brothers, their shirts are meh and the red fleece chinos are way too tight, it's like I'm back in middle school in my angsty tight jean phase.

I meant mod as in mod-fashion

Yeah I didn't mean modern. I was just wondering if there was some cross section between mod culture and prep fashion
