For anyone looking for fragrance suggestions, give as much information as possible about what you want. Helpful info could include sex, price range, climate/season, use (work/clubbing/etc.), notes/families you like/dislike, and other perfumes you've tried and liked/disliked.

And MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS. What did everyone get? Anything /frag/ related?

>What did everyone get?
With all kinds of colder weather frags on my amazon wish list, my mom, bless her heart, bought me Eau Aimable. Love it and an't wait for spring. It's orange blossom, Mandarin orange and bergamot but it's not a typical tangy sharp citrus, its creamy, almost warm and cozy and lasts and lasts, especially for an EdC.

I got a 100ml bottle of Dior Homme. There's been some talk about reformulations destroying it. Mine was made in September this year and so far I'm happy with it. Maybe it's because I haven't smellt any other version, but this is good juice.

I'm still gonna recommend copping a newer sample if you're thinking of rebuying or if you've tried it a couple of years ago and feel compelled to buy it now.

Sycomore:

"The dream team at Chanel seems to delight in applying superior skills to existing ideas they deem worthy of perfecting: Coromandel was a reorchestration of Lutens's Borneo 1834, and of course their Eau de Cologne is a 'here's how we do it' object lesson to every perfumer since the 1750's. Sycomore is, in my view, a magisterial gloss on Bertrand Duchaufour's Timbuktu. The latter introduced an Altoids-like idea to perfumery, consisting of a minty-licorice coolness combined with a radiant crackling-wood-fire note. What Polge and Sheldrake seem to have realized is that this accord offered a solution to the age-old problem of vetiver: too little and it gets lost in composition, too much and it always smells the same. Vetiver has both an anisic aspect and a smoky one. Cleverly flank it with Timbuktu's two companions, add a big slug of sandalwood, and vetiver finds itself in worthy company at last. Together they make a strange, very natural accord that shifts from shade to shade of deepest olive at each sniff. There is a tension, a dark mystery, to Timbuktu, which Sycomore does not try to emulate: it is content with merely being the freshest, most salubrious, yet most satisfyingly rich masculine in years. If putting it on does not make you shiver with pleasure, see a doctor."

Coromandel:

"Of the six new Chanels launched early in 2007, this is the one that most clearly has Christopher Sheldrake's handwriting all over it. He recently returned to his alma mater at Chanel after nearly two decades at Quest, during which he was chiefly occupied with composing Serge Luten's epoch-making line of fragrances. It must have been fun to see everyone, from Guerlain downward, gradually fall into step and pay him the sincerest compliment, imitation. Coromandel is, to my mind, Sheldrake's reinterpretation of Borneo 1834 done in the Chanel manner, muted, richer, less saturated, and less overtly oriental. It has enough patchouli in it to clear the air of Indian moths for a mile around, yet it manages to avoid any hippie earthiness by a trick I am sure every perfumer would like to emulate. If there were such a thing as a powdered white chocolate, it would smell like Coromandel. Wonderful." 4 Stars

>>

Kouros:

"Twenty-seven years after its release, the structure of Kouros is still so novel, so immediately recognizable, and so impossible to imitate that it is probably a sporadic case in perfumery. It smells like the tanned skin of a guy with gomina in his hair stepping out of the shower wearing a pre-WWI British dandified fragrance: citrus, flowers musk. It has that faintly repellent clean-dirty feel of other people's bathrooms,a nd manages to smell at once scrubbed and promissory of an unmade bed. The fact that all these images are conjured up by a fragrance in itself so consummately abstract is a testimony tot he brilliance of its creator, Pierre Bouron. Such things happen not by accident but only as the work of genius." 5 Stars

about 3-6: one to three per Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter, and maybe one as an extra option (e.g., for very special occasions, or one scent that is appropriate year-round, etc.). really depends on how many options you want, if you want to change it up often or have different scents for different occasions/moods/etc.

Fahrenheit (Dior)

"Fahrenheit should now be renamed after another temperature scale, maybe Réaumur or Rankine, because it is unrecognizable. It used to be a great citrus leather in the manner of Bel-Ami, overlaid with the gassiest, hissiest, most diffusive note of violet leaf in all of perfumery. Acetylenic esters have now been severely restricted (triple bonds smell wonderful but are chemically reactive), and what's left is a kind of Bel-Ami. Except that Bel-Ami itself has been messed with and Fahrenheit is arguably better than the modern version. Either way, nothing to celebrate" 2 Stars
>>
Egoïste Platinum (Chanel)

"Named like a credit card for tightfisted sugar daddies, this was never likely to be a good fragrance. In fact, it is quite extraordinarily bad for Chanel and aside from a fleetingly interesting floral-leather note up top, reeks of the sad male clone it was intended for. If you check into a decent hotel, chances are a freebie on the bathroom shelf smells at least as good as this."

Gucci by Gucci pour Homme (Gucci)

"I can see where the inspiration for a thing like this would come from: a train platform at a railway station in a major city, afternoon rush hour, the day the clocks are set back, and it's dark when you head home (an hour's travel). No place to sit, too crowded to read, and the guy next to you has recently refreshed his aftershave."

[a shitton, buddy, just get his book and find out]
obvious one, and my personal #1 of all time:

Black (Bulgari) [in italics he calls it "hot rubber"]

"Some of the best fragrances in history are built on precarious equilibria between two contrasting ingredients: the vanilla-vetiver accord of Habanita, the citrus-amber of Shalimar. This widens their emotional keyboard and, when the job is properly poised, allows them to smell different form moment to moment and from mood to mood, as if they always had something new and apt to say. In other words, they smell interesting, as opposed to merely beautiful. A friend of mine used to say that one particular type of short-grain Carnaroli rice he used for risotto seemed to understand his intentions and to posses native intelligence. I can now extend this insight to perfume: Black is buzzing with brains. It was composed by one of the greatest talents in the business, Annick Ménardo of Firmenich. Binary accords having been exhausted, what she did was increase the number of dimensions by one. Black sets out boldly into space on three axes: a big, solid, sweet amber note, a muted fifties Je Reviens floral note (benzylsalicylate) as green as a banker's desk lamp; and finally a bitter-powdery, fresh rubber accord such as one encounters in specialist shops or while repairing a bicycle tire puncture. These three tunes hit you in perfect counter-point when Black is first put on. The remarkable thing about Black's structure is the absence of top notes or drydown. Ménardo has contrived to make the harmony independent of perfume time, but very sensitive to small variations in one's perception. At different times, Black will strike you variously as a battle hymn for Amazons, emerald green plush fit for Napoleon's box at the Opéra, or just plain sweet and smiling. It also has the combination of great bones and good skin characteristic of old-fashioned perfumery, while being entirely novel and modern. (1/2)
>>
>>10752942
(2/2)
"Some things strive to be classics; others simply are. Spend and evening with Black and you will know that its place is with Bandit, Tabac Blond, and Cabochard among the great emancipated fragrances of all time." 5 Stars

>>10752915
1 Million (Paco Rabanne) 2 Stars

"As befits someone who claims to be the reincarnation of an Egyptian high priest and to possess visionary powers, Paco Rabanne's fragrances appear to be leading indicators of investment opportunities. Calandre (radiator grille) was released at a time when you could still buy a '67 Ferrari Berlinetta for a song, Métal heralded the rise in demand for and the price of ores, and now, three months before the turmoil on Wall Street, comes a masculine fragrance shaped like a gold ingot. I shall be watching future releases closely. A weird fragrance, 1 Million is a marriage of two distinct perfumery ideas that have never before been squished together: the tired apple tendency of Cool Water and the musky, Levantine hair-gel feel of Caron's No.3. Trouble is, the second idea quickly vanishes, leaving the first all by itself."

I only have a 1 ml sample of Kouros. I don't really get the "piss" in the opening (and quite frankly, it's nowhere near as repulsive as people seem to think, although it might just be due to reformulation issues and me liking these classic "manly" frags) but the thing is, late in the drydown it really starts to stink, smells like an ass (literally).
Did anyone get the same thing? It's weird since up until the 6-8 hr mark it smells great with maybe just a hint of something "dirty", then this intense anus smell emerges and stays for just as long. From the reviews, people usually experience the opposite, ie. it's repulsive in the first 20 minutes then gets really pleasant in the drydown.
>>
>>10753326
Is it better or just a good reformulation?

Hello /fa/ it's been a while, I got a quick question but it's important. What's the difference between a roll on oil, does it last longer,? Also does anyone own the original Helmut Lang fragrance that can review it? Thanks.

hesitant to give Le Labo a negative review after only two wears but...

to me Fleur D'Oranger 27 smells like a sour baby rubbed with peeled orange. I can respect what they're doing but somewhere it goes very wrong on my skin. had to wash it off after about two hours.

on the other hand, thé noir is fantastic. would strongly consider buying it if it could distinguish itself from the woody notes of Rose 31 a little better.

That's it's charm.

I have owned and loved it in its vintage and recent formulations and while it is indeed animalic, I have never smelled literal ass from it. I basically get honeyed incense. The amazing thing about fragrance is some people smell completely different things in the same fragrance. This is why you sample.

Hey guys! Big help needed.

So I own 2 frags right now, YSL la meme de l'homme and aqua de memo.

For christmas my GF got me one of those sephora deals where you get 15 samples and you turn in a coupon for a 1/7 oz bottle of one.

I'm looking for something that isn't too similar to either of the ones I own. I live in the pacific northwest, so pretty rainy and cold, but I love summer scents so that isn't out of the question.

I'm 19 in college, but I don't mind if it's casual or formal as I'm in both scenarios pretty often.

This is the list I can choose from. I haven't had a chance to try them all yet but I enjoy the versace and the bvlgari quite a bit.

Thoughts?

A little about myself, 40, retired, better than average physical condition. Financially independent with 2 kids. Main goal is a scent that my date will say...he smells good.

Amazingreen? I tried it over a year ago and didn't really get it.

> General thoughts on CDG fragrances?
Interesting, there's almost more diversity among them than among most of the other designers combined. That doesn't make them all good, but they're usually distinctive. When they're not good, it seems to be because they're riding the whole anti-perfume thing a little hard.

Hello anons quick question, what's the difference between Dior homme and Dior homme sport? I used th latter til it ran out and received a good amount of compliments on it (not as many as when I used Chanel de Bleú).

I also received a bottle of acqua di gio and don't know if I should blindly use it or exchange for another fragrance
>>
>>10761284
>difference between Dior homme and Dior homme sport?

it's a different fragrance. dior homme, dior homme intense and dior homme sport are somewhat similar, but they're not the same fragrance. sport is the least intense.

dior homme cologne smells completely different, even though the bottle is similar to the other three.
>>
>>10761304
Ah thanks for clearing that up, I'll have to test the Dior sometime
>>
>>10761284
Homme is heavier because it's for fall/winter, Homme Sport is a lot lighter for use in spring/summer without getting too strong and inducing head aches.

Is it too late to get Acqua di Gio? I love the smell and I'm in Portland OR where the smallest amount of taste in fashion makes you more fashionable than 99% of the population and no one wears cologne but I'm still paranoid about smelling the same as someone else.
>>
>>10762217
>I'm still paranoid about smelling the same as someone else.

Christ, enough with this faggot shit.
How many people in general wear fragrances? Very low,out of those what is the probability that they'll use the exact same one as you? Even lower, I have never smelled AdG in the wild.
And so what if you happen to meet someone who also uses the same fragrance? Either stop being a faggot or maybe develop a taste that's different from one of the most popular designer fragrances.
>>
>>10762232

Anyone have any suggestions on how to try out fragrances like Serge Lutens'? The ones I'm interested in aren't available in store in London, and I'm not sure if it's worth it spending 30 pounds on a 10ml sample. Someone mentioned they have a Borneo 1834- how did you first find/try it?

I bought a decant from Decantshop (I'm American) after looking up Serge Lutens and loved it so much I then bought a 5 mL and now saving up for a 75mL bell jar ($300 goddamn USD). Somewhat fortunately, it's not something you can really wear often anyway so it will last me a few years at least

Great house, I've liked most of what I've tried. Standouts are Chergui, Gris Clair, and Five o'clock Gingembre and those are much more affordable and can be found online for ~60 USD

Any Sephora sales rep will gladly make you up to three ~2.5ml plastic spray samples, no questions asked. Some have even given me two each. The last couple Sephorae I went to in LA carried a handful of TFPBs, one of which was Neroli Portofino. They also had Tokyo Milk, Replica, and a couple other not too expensive niche houses that I wasn't familiar with. Never seen a Lutens at one.

And in my experience, the higher end the store, the more likely they are to be loose with the samples. Neimans, Saks, Barneys are all sample sluts. I've had middling success at some Nordstroms and Bloomingdales, but have never gotten anything from Macys and the like.

Well, I guess it's just winter for it then. On that note, anything to recommend for fun temperatures like 32C and above? I hate really floral scents and tend to stay away from citrus. Green scents like Bel Respiro I quite like though.

Generally all the fragrances I enjoy work well only in winter unfortunately, with notes full of tar, tobacco, incense etc

I'm moments away from blind-buying Avant Garde by Lanvin. I want something warm and inviting for the winter/fall. I'm a male and I don't have a lot of money (found a good deal on this though, 3.3 oz tester bottle for ~$20). I'm new to fragrances but I guess I like woody scents, spicy scents, and a little bit of fruity scents (i burn a lot of patchouli and nag champa incense). I don't have a specific use in mind. I don't go clubbing and I don't need this for work. Only other perfumes I've tried are Acqua di Gio and this one perfume from a local vegan/vegetarian market called Dusk by Herban Cowboy. I don't know what I'd describe the scent as but I guess it's woody and vaguely spicy. I hope this is enough information.

Why not just purchase a sample of it?
>>
what kind of frags fit the faggot ysl skinny harry styles core desu? feel like trying something new, not too weird though
>>
ordered green irish tweed with some of my christmas money, is it worth?
>>
>>10771627
I think you'll love it, definitely a 'warm & spicy' fragrance. It unfortunately doesn't have the best performance, I get average longevity and below-average projection, but that doesn't matter to me because the scent is so damn good. People can definitely smell you when they get close though and from my experience it's well-liked. Honestly, you can't go wrong, might be one of the best value-for-money fragrances out there
>>

>like 32C and above
ELdO Fils de Dieu... is my favorite really hot weather scent. it's what a lime powder would smell like. not overwhelmingly citrusy, either.

Acqua di Parma Colonia or its main flankers (Assoluta, Intensa, and Essenza) are other good citruses worth looking into even if you're not a big fan of citrus.

Creed Virgin Island Water is actually pretty good once the nauseatingly sweet coconut in the beginning settles down

Prada Infusion de Vetiver or The Different Company Sel de Vetiver for light, summery vetivers which are relatively rare

as for greens, Profumum Ichnusa (herbal and woody), The Different Company Un Parfum Charme et Feiulles (very herbal but with some floral and fruit notes but blended in so they don't standout), and Diptyque Philosykos (EdT version only as the the EdP is too sweet),

Only you can answer if it's worth the money or not. That said, I think it's a fantastic fragrance, but it's been copied so many times and has thus become almost a "standard" smelling fragrance, so you won't smell very unique, but you will smell great.
>>
Has anyone tried mixing fragrances together or does that just make a complete mess? Genuinely curious about this fsr
>>
>>10772315
Never heard of Tuscaventus??
>>
>>10772315
It's called "layering" and it's what I'd consider advanced perfumery. I've only done DH and one or two flankers, so I'm pleb level in layering.

>>10772370
No but I have heard of several people wearing Tuscbacco Vanileather. That has to be a force of nature.

dude rose 31 is the SHIT!

I purchased a sample from le labo, and I'm in love with it too.

I also went in and sprayed on santal 33, it gave me a headache too woody.

I tried on Byredo's Pulp, and it's straight up orange juice

Would you guys know where to purchase le labo for cheaper than retail?

Ah, you got me. I typically purchase a lot of samples at once.

Someone should make a 2015 cologne tier list I know theres something like beginner tier and all that already but its old as fuck
>>
>>10772836
there is no tier list
desu the more expensive fragrances last longer project farther and just smell better but thats all you have to know
i wear a lot of TFPB because i like Noir de Noir TL TV and OW
le labo makes some interesting fragrances but nothing that i like
plenty of people like amouage but i think they all smell like shit
creed is garbage memes

go to sephora and sniff till you cant breathe and then leave and come back and continue or go to neimans/saks and try the same process

the premium dior line is pretty interesting everything smells pretty bland except feve delicieuse and leather oud(smells like poop)

these are all my opinions though maybe you'll wear amouage and the dior leather oud and if you like it go ahead and rock it anon because fragrances should be for one person and thats you

except dont wear anything ridiculous to work beacuse thats just rude

Awesome, thanks so much. This is truly the best thread on this image board - people are so helpful.

I'll definitely have a look at all the fragrances suggested. As I said, I think I'm leaning towards green fragrances and Philosykos was something I was reading up on earlier. Had no idea that the edp was sweeter though.
Thanks man, your posts are like a treasure trove. Truly appreciate it

hey guys i found a vintage bottle of chanel no 5, i like the scent but people tell me its and old lady fragrance. im a guy tho, wat do?
>>
Bleu De Chanel or BDC Eau De Parfum?
>>
>>10752500
If you like it, keep it. As far as other people's opinions are concerned, you'd be hard pressed to find a more divisive fragrance. I love Kouros and it got me a lot of compliments, but some people really fucking hate it with a passion.
>>
>>10752564
Mine is perfectly fine.

Encre Noire. It really does kind of smell like ink, but there are days when I absolutely love how it smells. For me it's the perfect rainy day autumn fragrance.

Update: Went to Selfridges and bagged myself a couple of samples, including Amazingreen, Philosykos, and a few from Herme's Jardin series.

So far, really love the Philosykos, but I found a few amazing green fragrances as well, if anyone's interested:
>Un Jardin Apres la Mousson (Hermes)
>Florabello (Diptyche as well)- Coffee and Apple notes
>Bel Respiro (Chanel)- Greenest scent so far
>Wood Sage & Sea salt (Jo Malone)- a bit too generic, maybe
>Claire de musc (Serge Lutens)
>>
>>10774700
>Amazingreen

have you tried it yet? i'm interested but reviews seem to be mixed
>>
>>10775578
It was forgettable, in my opinion. I don't really remember the notes, but I do remember it smelled really fresh when I was there, and me being impressed with it. But when I got back home, it dried down to this flat, uninteresting generic cologne scent. I do like my CdG parfums, but unfortunately many have the pitfall of being very uncomplex/flat as it rests.

Wasn't my cup of tea.
>>
can anyone in the UK send me a sample of CDG Dot, exclusive to Liberty ;_;

any tips for layering? how do you know when it would be a good idea?
>>
>>10777068
gut feeling has never let me down anon
then again I would of never tried tobacco vanille and neroli portofino mainly because I hate NP
if you want to look into TF scents just ask one of the boutique specialists because they're very knowledgable about this business

I feel like it's a lot of guess and check because now not only are you combining 2 scents that may not combine well even on a card they also will react differently to your skin
np + tv smells great on my friend who is a tf frag specialist and on card but not on me
>>
>>10776167
>Plum Jap
Wore this to work and now everyone thinks I'm gay. Thanks, /frag/

Chanel - Antaues Pour Homme

Anyone ever try this one?
>>
>>10777875

I've only tried the newest formulation, which is supposedly quite different and not as strong as the vintage. It's still a very powerful, heavy and masculine scent regardless. Strictly for cold weather, plus you need a certain manliness to pull this one off, femboys should look elsewhere.

Cheaper alternatives that I've found are Aramis & VC&A Pour Homme.
>>
>>10777875
Antaeus is an easy top ten frag for me, probably top five. I have a vintage bottle and a sample from maybe two years ago, and while the animalic castoreum is more prominent in the vintage, they are both incredible and close enough that when my vintage runs out, I wouldn't feel deprived if I could only find a current one. (Provided it hasn't been reformulated poorly after my sample was made.)
>>
>>10777902
>>10777947
Okay thanks. Every link I found mentioned the level of masculinity needed haha I just think it's a bit of a older feminine scent. Fuck it though. I got a bottle for $20 at a thrift.

I'll have to see how it sets in, I'm not a big fan off the bat.
>>
>>10777302
Smells like old lady to me 2bh
>>
Tried on Creed's Imperial Millesime today, was amazed.
>>
>>10770095
Yo, still here. Yeah i copped something different, got floriental instead which i enjoyed much more. I think wonderwood's nice and all but i kinda agree it's lost its interesting edge since i first sampled it. Wasn't looking for an oud cz i've got an oud fragrance already (montale black, musky and rosy) and wanted something spicy/grassy/herbal, got the spicy from the new one. Just gonna build up from there, maybe le labo santal for my next
>>
>>10775578
Imo too sweet for what i was looking for, agree it was fresh but it did settle to something rather boring
>>
Male here, looking for something a bit dark, sexual, not something for everyday wear, just something that I'd wear that would say to a girl that I am trying to have sex w/ her.. not over $100

just asking here before I go hounding some sales clerks, ive already got some casual type scents, looking for something else, and not something niche
>>
>>10779155
Are you looking for 'dark' notes like tar, tobacco, birch etc? I have Black CdG and I still like it a lot after all this time. Very affordable too.

On that note: anyone have any opinions on
>Black CdG
vs
>L'incendiare (SL)
vs
>Tuscan Leather (TF)
vs
> Bois d'Encens (Armani)
>>
>>10779155
Blvgari Black is great, as is Black Orchid.
>>
>>10777302
kek, are you feminine looking? or do you carry yourself in a feminine way?

i'm p masculine, so there's no confusion. i don't get weird tells, lol. for sure, it's riskier if you're already a bit ambiguous (i.e. not on the extremes).

though, honestly, wear whatever you like, man. fuck what people think.
>>
>>10779181
>>10779204

not really looking for tar or tobacco but i'm not against wearing that. maybe "dark" isnt the right word. will check out Blvgari and Black CdG

got a few samples, Tom Ford Azure Lime (LIKE), Oud Wood (which was alright but looking for something a tad more exciting) and a few from Bond No 9 that I wouldnt wear personally but might find appealing on a gril

probably checked out 16 or so fragrances recently and i havent reached what I want yet for a special/rare occasion type scent but there are some notes i really enjoy in some of them..
>>
>>10779275
plum japonis has more of a warm scent not sure if thats what youre going for
also gives off an herbal old woman scent but i like it

azure lime has an awful dry down in my books so i would definitely take note of that when u wear it
>>
>>10779155

YSL's Opium pour Homme EDP may fit the bill. Really intense smell and not really something you'd use on a day to day basis and the dry down is really quite nice.
>>
What do you guys think of JOOP?
First time on /fa/, but from my time on 4chan i have come to realize that everyone is a bunch of hipsters in some way or another, turning everything that is normal or popular outside their board into a meme
Because of Joops popularity i predict it may also be a meme and for you to spaz out on me, if it is could someone please not and just give an honest answer?
>>
>>10779874

I had JOOP Homme, I hated it. It was sickenly sweet on my skin, it had this Fahrenheit vibe to it but without any of the subtleness.
>>
Pleb question but what are some fragrances to completely steer away from, despite popularity?

I know the polo fragrances are complete shit for the most part but any others?
>>
>>10772315
>>10772457
> layering
Dior Homme + Tam Dao (or maybe Wonderwood)
seems to have a lot of potential
>>
>>10779874
No need for the defensive crouch. Joop isn't that popular. From what I've seen on this general, opinions are about 50/50 on it, which is what I've seen elsewhere. It's a bit past its peak popularity AFAIK.

Me I couldn't bring myself to spray it even on a paper strip. i just smelled the cap and thought I don't want to be anywhere near that thing when it goes off, but I had no opinion on it before smelling the cap.
>>
>>10779769
>>10779770

thanks for the rec's, will take note

YSL keeps catching my eye, will be checking out that brand more among others
