Well the series is complete now, and we're providing driveby commentary. There's also going to be a continuation at some point, and if anyone gets into this series through a storytime like this, maybe they'll pick it up when it comes out.

So basically, this could be to build hype for the next part that I believe comes out in August.

I didn't mean it as a wholly negative criticism. I'll freely admit I'm not into a lot of Bennett's stuff and I find some of her indulgences really off-putting (off the top of my head: highly referential writing, multi-page song sequences which can feel like filler, writing the same lesbian relationship a dozen times, not being as shocking as it thinks it is) but at the same time I appreciate her as a voice. It isn't the same thing as a lot of the really bland stuff that it gets grouped in with, and there's usually a point or edge to what Bennett is trying for if I don't always feel she nails the execution. Most people on /co/ tend to get hung up on the details of that - for example, in Angela Queen of Hell not getting the folktale inversion thing, or not seeing UNSOLICITED OPINIONS as a Fables dig.

I am kind of interested in how she's evolved as a writer of comics: she's extremely industrious and I think you can look at her older vs. more recent stuff even in the relatively short time she's been writing and see a progression. I think she definitely consciously writes to her brief (and varying levels of editorial influence, I assume). Corporate employers probably really like that, but I feel sort of bad for typically preferring a filtered Bennett to an unfiltered one. I do actually think she's probably capable of writing a truly great comic; it's why I keep following her stuff even if I think I likely won't be into it.

It's interesting you talk about edge. As a comics outsider, the comic has honestly felt mostly very safe and by-the-books for a story, even a corporate one. The main unconventional parts being all the lesbians and, apparently, some of her takes on characters or relationships. However, coming from someone who doesn't know who half these characters are in the first place, and who associate little with the names of those I do, there really doesn't seem to be anything special or unique about them - the closes would probably be the Russian part of the story.

I don't have the background to really know if it's in some way anti-conformist or has anything to say about comics and comic-stories in general, but it doesn't seem to be saying or doing much out of what I would consider ordinary in that way. Indeed it very much embraces what I would consider my biggest issue with the American comics industry, the (probably corporately mandated at this point) need to always use as many recognizable characters as possible, though at least in this story's case the team-up of characters is actually its central conceit. And honestly, while I find some parts of the plot fairly well done, the bridges between stories and the meetings and interactions between character 'groupings' seem pretty weakly established with characters often seeming to take things in stride that I would expect anything but. Whether for the sake of pushing things along or perhaps because of an idea that we, the reader, know these characters so therefore there's no reason to dwell on the fact that this other character doesn't.

When I'm talking about edge I'm talking more about Insexts or Animosity or Angela than this, which I agree is very safe. I agree with your point about the interactions and groupings of the characters too, you can basically parallel this with Injustice in that respect. Once the reader knows what's up, you get on to the fun queer period hijinks and drama quickly (or for Injustice, the deaths and betrayals and drama).
