A lot of the big companies sell stuff, but very little of it is anything you can't just get in Akiba.

There was some cool non-figure stuff in the GK halls though. Dollfie clothes and wigs in abundance, lots of really nice cosplay props, and plenty of non-anime stuff like plane and train models and the like. There were also quite a few tables and dealers reselling mass-produced figures, which wasn't something I had expected.

Also, there was a life-sized Kuroneko figure.

I was a bit surprised though. They make you buy a catalogue that honestly doesn't tell you anything about each booths' offerings, and it's pretty different from Comiket in the way things are laid out. Instead of grouping common categories together, it's all jumbled together, so the kiosk with busty anime girls will be next to grotesque horror-themed stuff, which is next to a bunch of modded gundam kits... If there was any logic behind it, it went over my head.

Which is pretty much all of them. A specific number of figures is produced based on preorder numbers and they're never made again, unless there's a re-release.

Eh, save rare exceptions the price is set before preorders are open. In manufacturing costs are mostly frontloaded so they have to cover that fixed cost with whatever they think they'll sell. And they can't really ask for an arm and a leg for an average figure of an unpopular show. If they go ahead and only sell a couple dozen, they will be deep in the red.

As for stuff like PriPri, usually another factor is who is in the production commitee. When GSC is part of it they get a larger cut in profits and so they go all out, starting production way before the show starts. Or maybe they do it as part of the show's promotion, but thing is they do it because they are in and there's more money on it for them than otherwise.

Official distributors dont pay for the merchandise beforehand, the leftover stock is discounted from the manufacturer themselves. Pretty different to wehat happens with Hobby Japan stuff for example where there is no official distribution since the figures are LIMITED AND EXCLUSIVE and they are paid by the store/reseller to the manufacturer in advance, that is a loss for the formers.
