They had been grinding that area for days and the Goblins aren't mindless, they're people unto themselves.

They got ambushed and attacked by a group of Goblins with CLASS levels (like our own characters) and essentially got shit on because the Goblins were better skilled and more optimized- knowing when to sit back and having actual balanced party chemistry.

Let me give you a rundown on Etrian Odyssey games.
First three are on Nintendo DS. Very comfy to play on a real console, still good on smartphone/tablet, and okay on PC.
The reason is map drawing - you draw your own maps. If you look up maps online like a casual then it's not an issue.

1 is the original game, it's kinda aged but d
2 is a sequel of sorts, you get minor benefits and extra dialogue if you beat 1 first. My personal favorite.
3 is quite different, instead of usual fantasy setting with knights, paladins, etc, you get pirates, princesses, farmers, shit like that. It's very unique and refreshing setting. Also, the best one of the DS games.

There is also 7th Dragon. Also similar to EO, but not quite. Still a great game, but play some mainline EO first.

Now, 3DS games. No (good) emulation of 3DS yet, so unless you've got a console, you won't get to play those.
4 is the best starting point, 1 and 2 have been remade for it, there is 5 and remake of 3 coming soon.
