I think they were dodging brand names in the first season(s). They always referred to cars with chassis codes and you'd never see any manufacturer logos on the cars. Note how the 86 is missing the Toyota marking on the back of the car.

The point of greatest friction is right before the tire starts to skid. ABS brings the tires in and out of this point much faster than you ever could, allowing it to stop faster than a human on dry pavement. You cannot brake faster than a modern ABS.

ABS is a binary On/Off.
Threshold braking is steady pressure.
It's faster than ABS, and very difficult to do.
I've never been able to do it on any sort of course.

You hold the brake AT THE THRESHOLD. ABS takes you in and out of that zone very quickly. Proper threshold braking never leaves the zone. It's hard as shit, and everyone but racing drivers will be faster on ABS.

Threshold braking and ABS operate in different ways. ABS cycles in and out of the point of maximum friction very very fast to create the most braking force possible. Threshold braking involves holding the braking pressure as close as possible to this point of maximum friction.

However, ABS has computer advantages you don't. It can control the braking force for each individual wheel all at once, while threshold braking allows you to only adjust braking for the entire car as a whole. You CANNOT out-brake a modern ABS like this. It's impossible because the ABS has more control over the car than you.
