Except that his idea of proving her wrong was to try and prove the entire basis of Japanese mecha design was fundamentally incorrect.

It would appear that in ML the Japanese learned very little from WWII.

This is also the entire point of modern fly by wire systems. If the Japanese TSF are unstable and require active pilot work to keep functional that’s a design flaw plain and simple. The control system is incompetently designed and no up to spec, they should keep the machine stable and simply allow the pilot to focus on the fight. The Japanese seem to have come to blindly accept the idiocy of requiring a pilot to fight his machine for control in some misguided “warrior spirit" bullshit.

Yui then resorts to nonsensical bullshit about how old pilots made due with worse, as if this somehow excuses the bad design. This is like arguing that we should accept a modern car without seatbelt or airbags because “old drivers survived without those”.

The existence of the Shiranui came from the fact that 1 F-4J was able to take out 2 F-15s, which provided substance to the argument that Japanese Eishis need Japanese TSFs to fight with, in order to bring out their full potential.

Also, this applied to everyone around the world, since the Europeans, the Chinese, the Soviets, the Middle easterns all went on to divert away from American designs, because they know what is needed to fight the BETA. Even the Americans came up with a close combat design, but since it didn't fit in with what they saw as their combat doctrine, they went with the F-22.

Read it again then. That anon is basically saying an easy to use machine is better than a hard to use machine. And the whole reason why the rest of the world switched to melee designs is because their supply situation is crap. The US doesn't need melee as much because, just like in real life, they have good logistics. What is needed to fight the BETA isn't some kind of melee design but an actual working logistics system. Range is always superior to melee when fighting BETA.

The Marine Corps emphasizes close-quarters-combat and melee fighting skills for their Eishi heavily, going by the TSFiA and the TDA series.

Same with a couple squadrons in the US Army, like the training flight of US veteran Eishi who were some elite unit that the Infinites embarrassed because of the Raptors' stealth superiority.

The reason Americans don't put a heavy emphasis and actually shy away from modifying the OS of their TSFs or refining dedicated close-combat weapons is because the war is still an abstract thing to the US.

The BETA dominate Europe, Asia, the Near East/Middle East, hit Japan, and is being held off from entering North Africa. North America is untouched (barring a certain nuclear wasteland in Canada). So the war is approached from a detached tactical and strategic vantage.

If Canada was taken and the Northern borders of the US were barely holding, their approach to close combat would be muuuuuch different.

That's precisely the part that makes no sense. To a person who has never touched a TSF before, how can it be hard to use? Once they have learnt it, can they not move it the way they want it to and get more performance out of it? It's like you're saying since there are automatic cars and manual cars, and manual cars are hard to learn, there's no need to make or learn to use manual cars at all. However, any driver can tell you that manual cars will always perform better and fast than manual ones.

And for your other point, the US is not involved in most of the conflicts around the world. They only get involved when they have an ensured logistics trail, so its like they only fight when they can win. Otherwise, they just pull out. American Heroes are made when the pilots refuse to pull out despite orders, and continue to fight beyond the supply line.

The Marine Corps trains to be more proficient at knife level combat...which isn't the same thing as melee with a sword. It's meant to serve as a secondary attack, not as a primary attack. However, as mentioned above, at least the Marines, which are nearly the only American forces that are fighting the BETA, know how to engage the BETA with nothing but a bar of steel in their hands.

Yes. The US military branches that exist in Muv-Luv are Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, I believe the Air Force is merged with the Army.
