I think I liked this scene so much, because it wasn't just some flashback to before the show, but it was related to development during it. You get attached to both characters and can sympathize with Clannadman.

The show gives no real time to grieve, it just moves on so you kind of just focus on Tomoya for those couple episodes then this scene it catches up to you hits you right in the heart.

I know Clannad has its flaws, but it really was a great show.

To be fair, after watching Clannad multiple times, I kind of fell like the first season is there more to make you connect with the characters rather than present a great story, because, let's face it, the VN is a harem, except After Story, and harem adaptations are rarely any good.
They did what most do, which is, take the better parts of every route, jumble them a little bit, and give more focus on the girl that's supposed to win.
