1st one because it has the skull and not the mouth. But overall the halos look odd. Maybe put some medival looking spikes around his head ?

B wings and halo because they create, imo the best silhouette from the front, and the halo size and placement lets it be framed by the wings, making it more immediately obvious than A or C

The first one is less intimidating and more "awe" inspiring because it doesn't have a mouth.

The second one is more intimidating because it's closer to being a human but perhaps that has been "enlightened."

The third one is weak all around.

I also think the shape of the second wings and shoulders are objectively the best. For the face it would be dependent on what you want. If you want something scarier explore the second option, if you want something more "Godly" or "Lovcraftian" or awe inspiring, go with the first.

My briefing was to take an Angel and give it a Nightmarish look; basically make a terrifying angel.

I'm pretty sure you are trying to use the shoulders and wings to frame the head, but using the original B design for both of those still frames the head and is more aesthetically pleasing. The shoulders on this are the worst part even if they do help "lead" to the face. The human body will lead to the face anyway so it's not necessary and the framing with the wings pointing up in that non circular shape created an "angelic" feeling where here it's more like a bird.

Wings on a head would be too heavy to support. Flapping the wings to fly would literally rip the head from the body. Very impractical design by someone who obviously doesn't understand or believe in evolution.

Not only that but with such a small brain it would have limited processing abilities similar to a cat. Also with so much of the one eye exposed with no surrounding ocular support the eye would be highly susceptible to constant injury from falling debris.

With so much eye exposed it with be weak, easy to punch, and cause constant pain.

It's nasal passage too small to intake sufficient oxygen. The eye would need much more blood, and muscle support.
Such a small brain could hardly handle basic function let along the power to process one eye viewing the world in 2d, needing the brain to interpolate three dimensional viewing.
That being would basically be dumber than a small animal.
Also not enough neck or bone support to support the head wings which would also need to take up more space in the head just to support the head wings on the skull.

To sum it up this being would be weak, easy to injure, and barely able to function as efficiently as a human.

Obviously. Lack of education or curiosity with the world around you leaves little respect for reality, and a need to explain what is plausible.

Magical everything is your solution. I have faith, but I also prefer some grounded basis in basic biology with what is possible with flesh, muscle, and bone. For me it is respecting the nature we're gracious to be a part of.

This might as well be cartoonish since all reality in every form is completely ignored for magic stuff you make up however you want.

The best monster designs don't make a lot of sense in ""real world"" parameters either.
Predator, Giger's Alien, The Pale Man, the many incarnations of The Thing, Pumpkin head, Godzilla.... etc

All of them are allegories to some sort of fear we have, and shouldn't be chained 100% to logic.

So, don't let "muh realism" get in the way a cool monster design.

Yes, but it is not a cool monster design. One swift tap to its giant jelly filled eyeball head, and it would be completely disoriented.

By having a giant eyeball head, it actually makes the creature look weak, and easily flawed by design.
The small brain also gives the impression that the creature is rather stupid, unable to have equaled brain capacity as humans.

No, it is based on the appearance. It has a small brain, and no protection from falling objects for the huge eyeball. Small brain, and huge unprotected eye in appearance demonstrates weakness.

Just as you would spot a person's weakness, this creature's weakness it quite apparent.
Having one gigantic eye that serves no purpose but to look weird reveals the creature's obvious weaknesses.

When you design a creature showing strength the appearance should give off a sense of power, and strength not a ridiculously small brain, and jelly head.
Muscle, bone, and mass are vital symbols of strength and protection.

The wings when flapping would rattle his head from side to side. It would look quite stupid.
The creature would be unprepared if someone approached it from behind.
Walk up to the creature from behind, punch the top of its head, stabbing eye pain. No ears, or visible ability to balance itself, or equilibrium.

The same could be said of literally every single great monster design - Giger's alien can't turn it's head because he has huge shoulders and clavicle and a humongous phalic head. It has freaking exhaust pipes coming out of it's back. It's tongue is another mini-mouth that serves no evolutionaty purpose, etc etc. The genious of all this work is that every single design decision is meant to have a deeper grounding on other stuff, semiotic and shit.

All of those line syou wrote are great valid points, but you're overthinking realism, when it's pretty clear that monsters are an allegory - a metaphor for different kinds of phobias.

Based on what OP said his briefing was, I think it's pretty clever to make an angel without Eyes, clinging to the "blind faith" metaphor. The decaying, stylized body a symbol of old, archaic and distorted sense of oneself, just like the catholic church. The wings where the ears would be are hinting that it doesn't listen to the context it is in, it just believes it is better than everyone else, a "holier than thou" kind of attitude.

Certainly doesnt use those wings for flying, since their size and location and all.
You're just thinking too much "mechanically" and "real worldly" - when you should be thinking more of allegories to illustrate and incarnate deep fears and uncanny feelings.
Personally, I think that's a pretty cool creature. I think he should elaborate more, but it's on the right direction, design wise.

Just break them down into their main shapes. If you're having trouble with arms and legs, then you need to look at more anatomy reference. There's also an amazing anatomy sculpting video on CG peers called "Eat3D Classical Sculpting - Anatomy and Figurative Art for Digital Sculpting" that is extremely educational. Hey dude, there's no real secret.
Basically, get some top tier reference, and try to get the silhouette correctly. If you get the shape right, it should be roughly readable as an arm from any angle. If you do that, you don't need to ~know~ anatomy.

Of course, knowing anatomy will always make everything easier.
Search for Scott Eaton's, Jose Pericles and Gio Nakpill stuff. They're very good at doing everything anatomy based in sculpture, props to these guys.

Try doing the volumes with insert meshes. Might be cool.
Just make the rough shape of the arm, insert individual muscles as simplified volumes and add/remove stuff with clay/caly buildup. It's not as easy as it sounds, but you just gotta put in the hours. It can be lame sometimes, but there's no real secret - just put in the hours.

If you know your work isn't good, means that you have good taste - and that great taste is what drives you to get better everyday. Keep working, bro; the truth is nobody thinks their work is good either. Just keep building your confidence and skills. At least, that's what I do; hopefully I'll have both someday haha
