I can weirdly relate to this. My mom's cat never really cared about me until recently I had an elightenment thing happe. (which included studying gnostic texts) and now this cat is obsessed with me.

I think so.

My guess is that people can't usually relate to animals because they're caught up in their own abstract mindset that is usually divorced from reality in some way. So they fit animals into their script as objects (like pets, cute little things to help out, non-entities to ignore, things to feel sorry for, bizarre creatures to study, etc.), but never really seeing them.
Gnosticism is all about removing "fake" and "demiurgical" biases and perceptual filters, you look behind the mask to see who's wearing it. In this case "cute little kitty" is the mask and the actual creature him/herself is its wearer.
It makes total sense that once you stop behaving in a way that no one except other insane humans can relate to, that creatures will step out of the woodwork and find that they can understand you better, and vice-versa. Also I think gnosticism preaches that you should see the divine spark in all, so in that sense you see a little bit of you in everything and whatnot, which allows a more personal connection.
I don't think it's necessarily magical (although it could be, who knows lol) but psychological.
