Not a Free Mason, but my granddad was. I say "was" because he got bored and stopped going while he was retired.

I went to some of the stuff he did with the Shriners club in my county (those are the guys that wear the little red hats, and I forgot what they're called). It was mostly community service stuff like the local fairs and carnivals. They also put on an "Alternative Prom" for all the high school seniors that can't afford the real ones all the high schools hold at Disney.

From what I understand it was more of a networking thing. Our Mayor goes as a Free Mason, and just about all the cops are Shriners. A bunch of board members at the non-profit I work for are members of one or the other, and just about every kid I graduated with attends the public meetings (some of them are in tech and say it's a good way to find Series A funding for projects).

The craziest thing I ever heard of them doing is hazing. My granddad says it was a "ritual." And when he explained it to me it sounded like some college frat stuff. He got an invite from some guy in a cloak who hand delivered it to the office he worked for at our local zoo. It was apparently a bunch of grown men making them carry out crazy dares in private. They don't do hazing anymore though. I think they stopped doing that about 10-or-so years ago. I'm up for an invite within the next couple of years as long as I can find the free time to finish the community service hours, and I'm pretty sure I have to start out as a Shriner if I remember correctly.

So I'm a bit skeptical about Free Mason conspiracy theories.

Not very. A lot of Masons hate it because not only are some of the degrees wrong, it sends the wrong message.
Those degrees aren't higher than MM. There isn't some hierarchy with 33rd and KT at the top on equal footing. And in fact, the A&AR degrees (on the left) aren't even relevant, because the jurisdiction it describes starts you out at 32nd.

Freemasony was founded on murder and deception. Masons (pre freemasonry) stoneworkers who held the keys of wisdom and sacred ratios began to allow noblemen into their lodges so they could learn the "secrets". Eventually there were enough noblemen who had joined lodges to where they all got together and kicked the actual stonworkers (true masons) out. That is the beginning of freemasonry as we see it today. There is a whole text that i am referencing here, going to look for it now because there actually was a specific murder of a mason by rited nobleman to spur the usurping of original masonry.

Not so much. Many early speculative lodges required an operative member to be present at a meeting.
It's just that ever since the Tudor period, stonemasonry was on a massive downturn, so there weren't many actual stonemasons left by that point. Ergo the letting speculatives in to keep it going.

In the event you're not joking:
Morgan vanished in 1826. Speculative lodges were not only well established, but our current system was wholly in place by then.
He wasn't actually a stonemason, but a bricklayer.
And he probably wasn't murdered by Masons, as the book he wanted to publish was just a local version of an existing exposure (one of many). The vanishing was just a publicity stunt to sell a book which many people already had in different form.
When a body was found, the sheriff (Eli Bruce) and his publishers were quoted as saying, "That's a good enough Morgan for now", as a way of pretending he was dead. Of course, the dead man's wife promptly came forward and pointed out it was her husband (Timothy Munro), not Morgan.

And most importantly, this was just an Eastern American event. Didn't really mean shit to the world.

It's really not that difficult to become a 32nd degree Mason. If you're male and can set aside eight hours a week for two years you can do it. And that still makes it sound harder than it is.
