Think of sleep as the moment where you subconsciously make sense of your experiences. If you don't sleep, your reality will mix with dreams in a random way and that will make you feel bad not mentioning obviously tired. Doesn't mean what you see is real just can't understand what is real or not.
Oh by the way, schizophrenia is just your random thoughts getting hallucinatory forms, the hearing is very sensitive so this is why you mostly hear voices.
