Didn't read the article, but had ex ultra orthodox friends. There's rampant childhood sexual abuse in those communities, with like 90 percent of kids being abused, and if they speak out, they're subject to imprisonment (in the community), beatings and torture. If they don't fall in line and shut up, it's total exile. These kids don't learn to read English, and don't learn any real skills. They're also told the outside world is evil, etc. I had friends who got out, and tried to help others... the community forced a bunch of people to make false claims about them, the people who left. It's only the top rabbis who do these things, but everyone covers it up. They could have killed her, but suicide is possible, too.
