Mental illness dehumanizes. The idea has caught so much wind that sane people literally lose their ability to see someone as a person after an authority passes down a diagnosis. Religion only makes this process worse.

I had a cousin who went through the state hospital system with some very legitimate psychiatric and emotional/behavioral problems.

After years, these problems mostly disappeared (like they did for me without meds or hospitalization), but the hospital would lose funding if a patient was discharged...owing to a change in legislation that was going to draw down the state hospital system. So in the interest of their own jobs, she was kept significantly beyond her necessary treatment time until a shrink with an actual conscience discharged her.

But 10 years on heavy psychotropics and heavily restricted freedom ruined her physiology, and she's morbidly obese. Joined the Jehovah's Witnesses which I guess is better than being a complete pothead which she would likely default to otherwise. Very challenging life, that's for sure.

This guy tried to rape me in a mental health facility and the system let him get away with!

I was hospitalized after a huge mental breakdown where I was having extreme hallucinations.

I got out in a week because I lied about feeling better, it was obvious that I wasn't but they let me go regardless. Maybe it was because they didn't think I was a "danger to my self or others" or that I was ok to still take of myself, or had someone to care after me when I went home.

Mental hospitals aren't like they were 50-60 years ago. The people there are actually trying to help you, there's just not much they can do for mental illness lime other diseases, the best you can do is watch over them like parent to a child. I won't lie though, it still feels like you're in a prison.
