While I don't think there's much to the events themselves, there's obviously something of value in watching the people around them. We've seen how much this eclipse took over the media, people made shitloads of money off of the hype.
We'll believe whatever dumb stories we can so long as they support a desirable future, and so by seeing what dumb stories are widely believed/popular we can see the kind of future a lot of people want. Basic enough shit right, when I'm on my way to an exam I don't feel good about I might fantasize about a traffic accident or a meteor hitting my campus. It's all about being freed from responsibility.
This simply showed us how many people feel overwhelmed by the world (Far larger scale than just an exam) and see no realistic way out. Shit looks like it's going to hell and getting a job at the grocer's won't change your country.
Hey, if the world ends though you won't have to worry about that next economic crisis, or that growing social issue or your own ability to navigate the corporate world.
